MASS MEDIA

Mass media brings nothing less than a Psychological

and Cultural Revolution to the world because people’s
horizons are widened and distances between cultures
and nations are linked. (Salibay, 2013)
“Let us not look at this whole new
world simply as an enemy. There is
much good in it. It is one of the signs
of time giving us hope and
opportunity for mission.”

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle

ca
The Pastoral Instruction on the Means of Social
Communication Communio
ca
et Progressio,
published in 1971 points that:

“The Church sees these media as ‘gifts of

God' which, in accordance with his
providential design, unite men in
brotherhood and so help them to
cooperate with his plan for their salvation.

Pope Francis on Social Media

ca

Social networks “help us to better connect,

rediscover, and assist one another, but on
the other hand, “lend themselves to the
manipulation of personal data, aimed at
obtaining political or economic
advantages, without due respect for the
person and his or her rights.”
Pope Francis on Social Media
ca

In a world like this, media can help us to feel

closer to one another, creating a sense of
the unity of the human family which can in
turn inspire solidarity and serious efforts to
ensure a more dignified life for all. Good
communication helps us to grow closer, to
know one another better, and ultimately, to
grow in unity.
ETHICAL ISSUES ON SOCIAL MEDIA
AND TECHNOLOGY

1. Fake News
2. Influence- Algorithm
3. Plagiarism
4. Cyber Bullying
5. Exploitation
1 FAKE NEWS

This is false or misleading

information. Sometimes
lead to damage to one's
reputation.
1 VIRTUE ETHICS

Virtue of Truthfulness
Christian Ethics- Thou shall
not bear false witness
"Lying"
INFLUENCE 2
The common influencers
set examples that
audience are trying to
imitate
UTILITARIANISM 2
Moral philosophy based on the principle
that an action is morally right
depending on the quantity of goodness
or happiness it produces. This can be
applied in the issue of the dominant
platform since the algorithm of social
media depicts the higher reliability
3 PLAGIARISM

Copying other people's works

without citing the original source
and claiming it be as his own
3 CONSEQUENTIALISM

Consequentialists would say that

"The ends justify the means."
If Plagiarism would ease the work
of a person. Plagiarism turns out to
be morally acceptable despite the
evilness that the object exhibits.
CYBER BULLYING 4
the use of electronic
communication to bully a
person, typically by sending
messages of an intimidating
or threatening nature.
VIRTUE ETHICS 4
focuses on the importance of virtue in
achieving moral rightness. A virtuous
person is free from any ability to
actualize moral corruption since they
embody good characteristics. In the
case of cyberbullying, prudence is the
ability to exemplify right decision.
EXPLOITATION 5
the action or fact of
treating someone
unfairly in order to
benefit from their work.
DEONTOLOGICAL
5
Duty and responsibility to
anything that we post on
social media.
Reflection:
The topic offers a variety of references taking place
the beginning of Man’s search for change, how the
new generation has instantly dominated the world
with new innovations, the implications it brought to
human’s existence particularly in communication,
Education, business, researches, entertainment,
production, economy and many more. Thus, it holds
the basics of what Technology is in the lives of
humanity.
Technology and humanity are coworkers for a
sustainable and competent way of living. They must
go hand in hand. The development of the former will
not be feasible without the desire to find the truth and
the good by the latter. As we all know, humanity
embraced and welcome technology at its fullest.

In relation to my field of expertise, which is education, I

could say that it is really a great help for me as an
educator. I cannot even imagine my teaching
pedagogy without the assistance of this gift. I can
finish my work easily, I can be more efficient and
productive, I can be more creative, I can what I want
to be with the help of technology. However, it is quite
disappointing that some of my students have lost the
control over the excessive misuse of the latter. They
have been passive conformists of todays media
pertaining to moral relativism, individualism and
misinformation
Learners nowadays have failed to go back to the very
core of why Technology is a friend to many. Why
technology is the key for development. And why
technology is a grace for our future. In other words,
man is the one who made technology as an enemy.
Simply because we are the ones in charge of its
function. We are the ones who create its manual. We
are the ones who decide for its purpose.
