OMA COLLECTIVE
An open community where creatives can find the space and inspiration to
work on personal and collaborative projects.

Project Brief

“Oma,” which is Dutch for “grandma,” is a self-initiated project that my

two partners and I conceived. We recognized a widespread need for
a communal space where individuals could gather, freely experiment,
and pursue their projects outside of the university setting. Observing the
considerable demand for such a place among our peers and community,
made our determination to bring this concept to life even stronger.

PROCESS

We are a trio of friends: Hidde, Bram, and Mink. Once we thoroughly

discussed our aspirations for a workshop, it was time to turn our plans into
reality. We stumbled upon a captivating location within close proximity
to both the university and the city center—an old factory. Over the course
of a few months and through sheer dedication, we transformed it into a
fully functional workshop. To involve the community and gain valuable
insights, we extended an invitation to a hundred individuals to join us for
a brainstorming session. By allowing people to glimpse into our creative
process, we received invaluable input, ensuring that the space we created
was not just for ourselves, but for others as well.

contributing their unique skills and efforts to ensure that Oma becomes the
ideal destination for creative pursuits. Within our workspace, we cater to a
diverse range of crafts, including photography, sewing and textile printing,
woodworking, surfboard shaping, oil painting, and furniture restoration.
Oma has evolved into a welcoming space where anyone is encouraged to
drop by, much like visiting your own grandmother’s home.

SANDBOY
The Sandboy is a uniquely designed pizza oven that offers reusability and
is specifically tailored for beach use. It incorporates a clever feature by
utilizing sand as a filler, which significantly reduces its weight and enhances
portability, making it effortless to carry along with you.

Project Brief

As part of Design Project 1 at the Industrial Design Engineering faculty in Delft,

we were tasked with creating a pizza baking solution for lazy students to use on
the beach, collaborating with the company Fatboy. Throughout the project, we
were instructed to maintain a keen focus on the dynamic relationship between
the customer, the location, and the company itself.

Sandboy represents the result of my first big design project during my

bachelor’s program at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

Throughout the process, I followed the iterative cycles of the double diamond
method outlined in the Delft design guide. Initially, I engaged in an extensive
research phase, diverging to explore various aspects and requirements that
my product needed to fulfill. This led to the creation of a comprehensive list
of specifications. Subsequently, I generated six distinct concepts, carefully
considering each one’s potential. Eventually, the Sandboy emerged as the
most promising solution. The Sandboy comprises multiple bags designed to
be filled with sand, resulting in a lightweight and well-insulated oven that is
specifically crafted for beach use.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Food for thought represents a thought-provoking approach to the
creation of household items.

Project Brief

During the course Materials & Manufacturing, we were tasked with

exploring the possibilities of bio-based materials. Our objective was
to investigate potential waste streams that could be repurposed to
create stable composites. Through experimentation and tinkering,
we sought to find innovative ways to transform these waste materials
into valuable resources.

Material research
Our intention was to elicit strong reactions, provoke thought, and encourage
others to expand their perspectives by thinking unconventionally. That is
PROCESS

why we wanted to create cutlery using human hair, aiming to challenge

societal norms and preconceived notions. To bind the materials together,
we employed bone glue derived from animal bones, which were cooked
with water, and pine resin—a plant-based viscous liquid. This project ignited
our imagination, prompting us to consider the boundless array of products
and materials that could be crafted from unconventional waste streams,
often burdened with stigma or societal disgust. It sparked conversations
about fresh opportunities for sustainable production and consumption. By
embracing creativity and innovation, we can unearth novel solutions to
enduring challenges, ultimately fostering a more sustainable and inclusive
future.

MEMO
Memo is an ongoing social design project conducted at TU Delft,
focused on iterative exploration of methods to help individuals coping
with dementia reconnect with their personal past.

Design Brief

The objective was to create a smart device with a purpose that

positively impacts our lives in the modern world, considering the
abundance of gadgets that often fail to bring meaningful contributions.
Our task involved intentionally designing and collaborating with the
specific individuals for whom the device was intended. We had the
freedom to select our target audience, focusing on creating something
that would genuinely benefit them.

The project had a unique characteristic of allowing us to define our own
project brief as we progressed, making it highly agile. During the testing

phase, we discovered that not only individuals dealing with dementia were
facing challenges, but also their caretakers who had to endure significant
hardships. As a result, our focus expanded to find a solution that could
assist both the caretakers and the individuals with dementia in a home for
the elderly. To address this, we developed an accessible game specifically
designed for the elderly, enabling them to reminisce about their memories
and engage in conversations with their peers. Memo, the robot, was
introduced as a guide throughout the game, ensuring that the players didn’t
get stuck, alleviating the burden on both the individuals with dementia and
their caregivers. We created a Wizard of Oz prototype to test this concept
and gather valuable feedback.

KARTENT
Kartent is an eco-friendly tent constructed entirely from cardboard.
Our team undertook the task of enhancing the tent’s functionality by
designing a new entrance, aiming to elevate the overall comfort level for
its occupants.

Project Brief

The Kartent serves as a sustainable alternative to the disposable tents

commonly utilized at festivals, which contribute to a significant waste
stream. Our objective was to develop an enhanced iteration of the
Kartent, prioritizing the comfort of the user. By focusing on improving
the design and features, we aimed to provide festival-goers with a more
enjoyable and comfortable camping experience while reducing the
environmental impact caused by discarded tents.

Our project began with an extensive research phase, delving into the
primary complaints and concerns surrounding the existing tent design.
One prominent issue we identified was that the door opening of the tent
PROCESS

frequently resulted in leaks, compromising its waterproof capabilities.

Additionally, users expressed a desire for a dedicated space in front of the
tent where they could relax and socialize. Inspired by the elegance and
functionality of origami, we sought to address these challenges and conceive
an innovative solution. Instead of using multiple separate components, we
ingeniously crafted the entire front door from a single piece of material.
This ingenious design not only minimized the potential for leaks but also
provided an inviting space in front of the tent, allowing campers to gather
and enjoy their surroundings. By seamlessly integrating the principles of
origami into our solution, we achieved a harmonious balance of practicality
and aesthetics.

THE FUTURE OF SEX
In the realm of science fiction, we crafted a short love story tailored for
Sony, offering a captivating glimpse into a potential future.

Project Brief

Through the utilization of trend analysis, our task entailed envisioning the future of
PlayStation two decades from now. We embarked on a journey to create a vision
that was both realistic and thought-provoking, enabling Sony to gain insight into the
future landscape that awaits us in the coming years. Our objective was to provide
a plausible yet innovative glimpse into the future, allowing Sony to explore and
anticipate the possibilities that lie ahead. This exercise served as a means to foster
strategic thinking and facilitate decision-making that aligns with the evolving needs
and desires of gamers in the ever-changing technological landscape.

provide readers with a tangible and immersive experience, enabling them

story with a provocative tone, extending beyond the boundaries of our
research results. Our intention was to provoke thought and evoke a range
of emotions, including a sense of unease or fear, prompting readers to
contemplate their own future and the implications of emerging trends. By
pushing the boundaries of imagination, we aspired to stimulate meaningful
reflections and ignite meaningful conversations about the path that lies
ahead.
