To what extent do we have to respect other people's ideas?

Since we’re children we’re taught respect as a basic human need and
an essential value to build a healthy society. Yet, to what extent do we
have to respect other people’s opinions? Is it okay to disagree with a
rude comment about us and don’t argue for the good of our society?
I consider that even when we talk about respect, it should have limits.
Once you disrespect me, my beliefs, my body shape, my culture, my
family or any of the aspects of my life that really matters to me, don’t
expect me to respect your ideas. When you respect someone, you avoid
judging them or their actions. You may not always agree with them, but
you have to measure your words and express them carefully.
Nowadays, we live in a society where everyone wants to be heard and
wants the attentions of others all the time. But if we want others to
respect our ideas and recognize our worth as an individual, we must
give them some space too.
