Main Hydraulic Pump

Disassemble & Assemble Main Hydraulic Pump
Start By:
a. remove main hydraulic pump and pump drive coupling
Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection,
maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with
suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing
fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to
collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations
and mandates.
1. Make sure the outside of the main hydraulic pump is thoroughly clean prior to disassembly.
2. Put identification marks on all parts of the main hydraulic pump for assembly purposes.

3. Remove the swing charge pump and the swing pump from the main hydraulic pump. Refer to
the topics "Remove & Install Swing Charge Pump" and /bq Remove & Install Swing Pump" in
this module.
4. Remove drain plug (3) from the pump housing. Drain the oil from the main hydraulic pump into
a suitable container for disposal.
5. Remove five socket head bolts (1) and regulator group (2) from the pump adapter group.
6. Remove three small O-ring seals (4) and one large O-ring seal (6) from the pump adapter group.
7. Remove roller (8), spring (7) and piston (5) from the seat adjuster group.
8. Disassemble regulator group (2) as follows:
a. Remove the load sensing valve. Remove plug assembly (13) and control piston (19) from the
housing. Remove O-ring seal (14) from the plug assembly.
b. Remove plug (16). Remove spring retainer (11), spring (12), spring (17) and spring retainer
(18) from the plug. Remove O-ring seal (10) from the plug. If necessary, loosen nut (9). Remove
margin pressure adjusting screw (15) from the plug.
c. Remove the torque control valve. Remove plug (25), spring retainer (22), spring (26), spring
retainer (23) and valve spool (27). Remove O-ring seal (21) from the plug. If necessary, loosen nut
(24). Remove torque control adjusting screw (20) from the plug.
d. Remove the horsepower control valve. Remove the four socket head bolts and cover (30) from
the valve body. Remove O-ring seal (33) from the cover. Remove spring retainer (31), spring (29)
and spring retainer (32) from the cover. Remove control piston (28) from the housing.
e. Remove plug (39), and horsepower control spool (41) from the housing. Remove O-ring seal
(35), spring retainer (36), spring (40) and spring retainer (37) from the plug. If necessary, loosen
nut (38). Remove horsepower adjusting screw (34).
f. Use suitable retaining ring pliers to remove retainer ring (42) from the side of the housing.
g. Remove bolt (43) and lever (44) from the housing.
9. Remove O-ring seal (46) from flange (48).
10. Remove clutch hub (47) from the pump drive shaft.
11. Remove four socket head bolts (45). Remove flange (48) from the pump adapter. It may be
necessary to pry the flange loose from the pump adapter.
12. Use suitable retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (49) from clutch hub (47).
13. Remove O-ring seal (50) from the back side of flange (48).
NOTICE
Both seat adjustment groups (53) and (54) (destroke servo piston and
upstroke servo piston) will come apart as pump adapter (51) is being
removed from the pump housing. To prevent mixing of parts, slowly
remove the pump adapter. Some parts of the seat adjustment groups
will stay in the pump adapter and some parts will remain in the pump
housing.
14. Remove four socket head bolts (52) that hold pump adapter (51) to the pump housing. Slowly
remove the pump adapter from the pump housing. It may be necessary to pry the pump adapter
loose from the pump housing.
15. Remove seat adjustment group (53) (destroke servo piston) from the pump adapter. Remove
rod (57), piston (56) and spring (55).
16. Remove seat adjustment group (54) (upstroke servo piston) from the pump adapter. Remove
the rod, piston (59), spring (60) and bushing (58) from the pump adapter.
17. Mark the position of port plate (61) in relation to the pump adapter. Remove port plate (61)
from the pump adapter.
18. Remove bearing (62) from the pump adapter.
19. Remove O-ring seal (63) from the pump housing. Remove four socket head bolts (66) and two
retainers (65) that hold the cylinder assembly to the cradle.
NOTICE
During removal of cylinder assembly (64) from the pump housing, do

not let the components fall apart. All parts in the cylinder assembly
should be installed in their original location.
20. Carefully remove cylinder assembly (64) from the pump housing and shaft.
21. Disassemble cylinder assembly (64) as follows:
a. Put identification marks on nine piston assemblies (67) as to their location in retainer plate (68)
and cylinder (69). Remove the nine piston assemblies and the retainer plate, as a unit, from the
cylinder.
b. Separate nine piston assemblies (67) from retainer plate (68).
c. Remove retainer (70) from cylinder (69).
d. Note the positions of cup springs (71) and shim/s (72) prior to removal from the cylinder.
Remove the shim/s and the cup springs from the cylinder.
22. Mark the position of the maximum angle stop screw and the minimum angle stop screw prior
to removal from the pump housing. Loosen nut (73). Remove maximum angle stop screw (74)
from the pump housing. Loosen the nut on the other side of the pump housing. Remove the
minimum angle stop screw from the pump housing.
23. If necessary, remove bleed plug (75) from the pump housing. If necessary, remove the drain
plug from the other side of the pump housing.
24. Remove four plugs (77) and four slotted pins (76) from the pump housing. Remove the O-ring
seal from each plug.
25. Mark the position of cradle (78) in relation to the pump housing for installation purposes.
Remove cradle (78) from the pump housing.
26. Remove four rods (79) from cradle (78).
27. Remove two roller bearings (80) from the pump housing.

28. Remove two outer races (81) from the pump housing.
29. Use Tool (G) to remove retaining ring (82).
30. Use a soft faced hammer to remove pump drive shaft (83) from the pump housing. Remove
the pump drive shaft in the direction shown.
31. Slide cover (84) off the pump drive shaft.
32. Remove O-ring seal (85) from cover (84). Remove lip seal (86) from the cover.
33. Use suitable retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (87) from the pump drive shaft.
34. Using a press, push pump drive shaft (83) out of bearing (88).
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the main hydraulic pump.
35. Make sure all parts of the main hydraulic pump are thoroughly clean prior to assembly. Check
the condition of all parts of the main hydraulic pump for wear or damage. If any of the parts are
worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
36. Use a press to install pump drive shaft (83) in bearing (88). Install the pump drive shaft until
the bearing makes contact with the shoulder on the shaft.
37. Use suitable retaining ring pliers to install retaining ring (87). Retaining ring (87) holds
bearing (88) in position on pump drive shaft (83).
38. Use Tool (A) to install lip seal (86) in cover (84). Install the seal with the lip facing toward the
outside of the cover and until it makes contact with the counterbore in the cover. Lubricate the lip
of the seal with clean hydraulic oil.
39. Install O-ring seal (85) on cover (84). Apply clean hydraulic oil on the O-ring seal.
40. Carefully slide cover (84) over the end of pump drive shaft (83) as shown.
41. Using a soft faced hammer, carefully install pump drive shaft (83) in the pump housing. Install
the pump drive shaft until the retaining ring groove for cover (84) is exposed.
42. Use Tool (G) to install retaining ring (82). Make sure the retaining ring is properly seated. Use
a soft faced hammer to seat the pump drive shaft in the pump housing. Hit the back side of the
pump drive shaft until cover (84) is seated against retaining ring (82). Also, bearing (88) on the
pump drive shaft should be against cover (84).
43. Put the pump housing in a vertical position.
44. Make sure two outer races (81) are thoroughly clean. Install the two outer races in the pump
housing. Make sure each outer race is seated properly in the machined grooves of the pump
housing. Apply clean hydraulic oil on the outer races.
45. Install four rods (79) in cradle (78) as shown.
46. Apply clean hydraulic oil on two roller bearings (80). Install two roller bearings (80) on cradle
(78). Slide each roller bearing (80) over rods (79); then position the roller bearing on the cradle as
shown. Make sure each roller bearing is seated properly. Fasten each roller bearing to the cradle
with a rubber band as shown. The rubber bands will hold the roller bearings in position during
installation of the cradle in the pump housing.
NOTICE
Do not move roller bearings (80) out of position during installation of

cradle (78) in the pump housing. If roller bearings (80) or outer races
(81) are not seated properly, the pump will not operate properly.
47. Carefully install cradle (78), with roller bearings (80), in the pump housing in its original
position.
48. Use a pair of scissors to cut each rubber band. Slightly lift up on cradle (78), and slide each cut
rubber band out of the pump housing.
49. Check the position of the cradle in the outer races in the pump housing. Move the cradle back
and forth by hand to be sure it is seated properly in the outer races.
50. Visually inspect the position of four rods (79) through the four openings in the side of the
pump housing. Each rod should be slightly angled, but centered over an opening.
51. With each rod (79) centered, use a screwdriver to install four slotted pins (76) in the pump
housing. Each slotted pin (76) must engage with a rod (79). Visually check to make sure each pin
(76) engages with a rod (79) through the main opening in the pump housing.
52. Install the O-ring seal on each plug (77). Install four plugs (77) in the pump housing.
NOTE: The maximum angle stop screw and the minimum angle stop screw are adjusted after
installation of the main hydraulic pump in the machine.
53. Install the minimum angle stop screw and maximum angle stop screw (74) in the pump
housing. Temporarily install each stop screw in its original location. Install nut (73) on each stop
screw. Cradle (78) should be level in the pump housing after installation of the stop screws. Tool
(F) can be used to check the distance between the pump housing and cradle on both side to make
sure it is level.
54. Determine the Lift-Off Limitation Adjustment of the rotating group as follows:
a. Place port plate (61) on a surface plate as shown. The flat side of the port plate should be
against the surface plate.
b. Install Tool (B) in the inside diameter of port plate (61) as shown.
c. Place cylinder (69) in position on Tool (B) and port plate (61). Make sure the cylinder is seated
properly on the alignment plug [Tool (B)] and the port plate.
d. Make sure there are no shims or cup springs in retainer (70). Install Tool (C) in retainer (70) as
shown.
e. Place retainer (70), with Tool (C), in position on cylinder (69) as shown.
f. Place retainer plate (68) in position on retainer (70) as shown.
g. Bolt Tool (D) to Tool (E) as shown.
h. Place the assembled tool into the splined bores of retainer (70), cylinder (69) and on retainer
plate (68) as shown. Make sure the tool is properly seated in retainer (70), cylinder (69) and on
retainer plate (68).
i. Record the dimension that is stamped on the side of Tool (E). This dimension is the distance
from the top of retainer plate (68) to the top of Tool (E). See Photo D41429. Call this dimension
(W).
j. Use a Starrett Vernier Height Gauge or a similar tool to measure the dimension in Step 54k.
k. Measure the distance from the top of the surface plate to the top of Tool (E). Record this
dimension, and call it dimension (X).
CALCULATION:
Dimension (X) - Dimension (W) = Dimension (Y)
Dimension (Y) is the lift-off limitation height without shim (72).
NOTE: The correct lift-off limitation height of the pump must be 136.85 ± 0.1 mm (5.387 ± .004
in). Call this height dimension (Z).
CALCULATION:
Dimension (Z) - Dimension (Y) = Thickness of shim (72) used to obtain the correct lift-off
limitation height.
l. Shim (72) is available in several different thicknesses. Select the correct thickness of shim (72)
to obtain the correct lift-off limitation height. Only one shim (72) should be used.
55. Assemble cylinder assembly (64) as follows:
a. Apply clean hydraulic oil on all parts of cylinder assembly (64).
b. Install cup springs (71) in retainer (70) in their original positions. Make sure the cup springs are
arranged for maximum height.
c. Install shim (72) that was determined in Steps 54a through 54l in retainer (70). Put retainer (70),
with the cup springs and shim in position on cylinder (69) as shown.
d. Install nine piston assemblies (67) in their original locations in retainer plate (68).
e. Install retainer plate (68) with nine piston assemblies (67) in cylinder (69). Make sure to install
the nine piston assemblies in their original bores in cylinder (69).
56. While holding cylinder assembly (64) together by hand, turn it over as shown.
57. Fasten a piece of nylon cord around nine piston assemblies (67) as shown. The nylon cord will
be used to hold cylinder assembly (64) together during installation in the pump housing.
NOTICE
Do not let the components of cylinder assembly (64) fall apart during
installation in the pump housing.
58. Carefully install cylinder assembly (64) over the shaft in the pump housing. Make sure none of
the parts of the cylinder assembly have come out of position during installation. Remove the nylon
cord from around the cylinder assembly.
59. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of four socket head bolts (66). Install the socket
head bolts in two retainers (65). Using a pair of needle nose pliers, put each retainer (65) in
position in the pump housing. Make sure each retainer engages with the retainer plate of the
cylinder assembly. Tighten four socket head bolts (66).
60. Install O-ring seal (63) in the pump housing.
61. Lower the temperature of bearing (62). Use Tool (A) to install the bearing in the pump
adapter. Install the bearing until it makes contact with the counterbore in the pump adapter.
62. Apply clean hydraulic oil on port plate (61). Put the port plate in its original position on the
pump adapter.
63. Install seat adjustment group (53) (upstroke servo piston) in the pump adapter. Install bushing
(58), spring (60), piston (59) and the rod in the pump adapter.
64. Install seat adjustment group (53) (destroke servo piston) in the pump adapter. Install spring
(55), piston (56) and rod (57).
65. Carefully install pump adapter (51) on the pump housing. Make sure the rod in seat adjustment
group (53) and the rod in seat adjustment group (54) engage with the openings in the cradle.
66. Install four socket head bolts (52) that hold pump adapter (51) to the pump housing.
67. Install O-ring seal (50) on flange (48). Apply clean hydraulic oil on the O-ring seal.
68. Use suitable retaining ring pliers to install retaining ring (49) in clutch hub (47).
69. Put flange (48) in its original position on the pump adapter. Install four socket head bolts (45)
that hold it. Install O-ring seal (46) in the flange.
70. Install clutch hub (47) on the pump shaft.
71. Assemble regulator group (2) as follows:
a. Put lever (44) in position in the housing. Install bolt (43) that holds it.
b. Use suitable retaining ring pliers, and install retaining ring (42) in the housing.
c. Install horsepower adjusting screw (34), with nut (38), in plug (39). Install O-ring seal (35) on
plug (39). Install horsepower control spool (41), spring retainer (37), spring (40), spring retainer
(36) and plug (39) in the housing as shown.
d. Install O-ring seal (33) in cover (30). Install control piston (28), spring retainer (31), spring
(29), spring retainer (32) and cover (30) in the housing as shown. Install the four socket head bolts
that hold cover (30) in position.
e. Install torque control adjusting screw (20), with nut (24), in plug (25). Install O-ring seal (21)
on plug (25). Install valve spool (27), spring retainer (23), spring (26), spring retainer (22) and
plug (25) in the housing as shown.
f. Install the load sensing valve in the housing. Install O-ring seal (14) on plug assembly (13).
Install control piston (19) and plug assembly (13) in the housing.
g. Install margin pressure adjusting screw (15), with nut (9), in plug (16). Install O-ring seal (10)
on plug (16). Install spring retainer (18), spring (12), spring retainer (11) and plug (16) in the
housing.
72. Install spring (7) on roller (8). Install roller (8) in piston (5).
73. Install piston (5), spring (7) and roller (8) in seat adjustment group (53) (upstroke servo
piston). Make sure that piston (5) engages with the groove in the piston of the seat adjustment
group.
74. Install three small O-ring seals (4) and one large O-ring seal (6) in the pump adapter group.
75. Carefully put regulator valve (2) in position on the pump adapter group. Make sure that roller
(8) engages with lever (44) in the regulator valve housing. Install five socket head bolts (1) that
hold the regulator valve to the pump adapter group.
76. Install the swing pump and the swing charge pump on the main hydraulic pump. Refer to the
topics "Remove & Install Swing Pump" and Remove & Install Swing Charge Pump" in this
module.

60. Install O-ring seal (63) in the pump housing.

70. Install clutch hub (47) on the pump shaft.

71. Assemble regulator group (2) as follows:

a. install main hydraulic pump and pump drive coupling
