Johnny Appleseed Days

Johnny Appleseed Days in Paradise October 1st & 2ndnd First held in 1888, the fair now known as Johnny Appleseed Days is the oldest harvest in the state! It has been sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce since 1937. The 2011 two-day fall festival will celebrate Paradises apple heritage with homemade apple pie and ice cream. Paradise residents and members of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce will again bake one thousand apple pies, available whole and in slices. Food vendors will serve Johhny Appleseed pulled pork, apple smoothies, and funnel cakes with apple topping. The Gold Nugget Museum, adjacent to Paradise Elementary school, will serve hard cider in its garden. Paradise t-shirts, badges and souvenirs will be available from The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce booth.Local businesses will give demonstrations and display their wares, and Paradise will host artisans from all over the state and beyond selling a variety of handicrafts. The ever-popular childrens area will feature face painting, games for the young and old alike and prizes. Johnny Appleseed will visit and tell stories. There will be continuous entertainment both days. So come and join us at Johnny Appleseed Days on Saturday, October 1st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, October 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place at Paradise Intermediate School, 5657 Recreation Drive, in Paradise. The Chamber of Commerces Johnny Appleseed Days is an historical event that involves the entire community. The event is enjoyed by scores of attendees each year, many of whom make Johnny Appleseed Days an annual family occasion. Johnny Appleseed Days represents one of the ways that the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce unites local businesses with local residents. Located right next to the Gold Nugget Museum, the Intermediate School has become the festivals new home and the Gold Nugget Museum has partnered with us to provide the essential historical component.

Butte County Animal Control Announces Low Cost Rabies Clinic To Coincide With World Rabies Day 2011
On September 28, the Butte County Public Health Department Animal Control is participating in a low-cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics co-sponsored by the North Valley Veterinary Medical Association, City of Chico Animal Control and the Butte Humane Society. The goal of the clinics is to vaccinate more pets in Butte County and raise awareness about the importance of rabies prevention and control. The rabies clinic will coincide with World Rabies Day, a global rabies awareness and prevention campaign. The clinic will be held in Chico at the following location and time: Butte County Public Health Department 695 Oleander Avenue Wednesday, September 28 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Rabies vaccinations are available for $6.00 (cash only). Other vaccines will be available for an additional cost of $12.00. Butte Humane will provide microchipping for $10.00 and dog licenses will also be available. Checks will be accepted for licenses. It is estimated that every year 30,00040,000 U.S. residents are potentially exposed to rabies, requiring human rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). When left untreated, rabies in humans is almost always fatal. However, it is also 100% preventable. Rabies prevention starts with the animal owner, advises Phyllis Murdock, Public Health Director. We recommend that people vaccinate dogs, cats, and any other animal that has regular contact with humans, such as horses. Although the majority of rabies cases occur in wildlife, most humans are exposed to the virus as a result of an encounter with an infected domestic animal. Keeping pets, including cats and dogs, up-to-date on vaccinations, is a primary means of helping to prevent rabies in humans and domestic animals. For more information on World Rabies Day visit www.worldrabiesday.org.

Mozart Mile to Take Place Sunday, October 2nd

The 33rd Annual Mozart Mile on Sunday, Oct. 2, at the One-Mile Recreation Area in Bidwell Park will bring live musicians and runners together in a 5K run or 1-mile walk to benefit the North State Symphony (NSS) and other local organizations. Festivities begin bright and early at 7:30 a.m. Its a great way to greet the cooler weather and fun for us to work with all these other folks, said NSS Executive Director Keith Herritt. Its turning into a real celebration of all the arts in Chico. The Symphony is partnering with performers who include members of the Chico Community Ballet; Music Teachers Youth Orchestra; the Ink Blot Arts theatre group from CSU, Chico; several smaller ensembles of local musicians including guitarist Warren Haskell; the Chico Ukulele Group; bagpiper Elizabeth Quivey and others. Chico Friends of the Library, and the National Charity League, will be helping out at the Mozart Mile as well as chiropractor Dr. Paula Barros, offering headand-neck massages. For entertainment, walkers will be able to observe a group of Avenue Nine Gallery landscape plein air painters as they create their rustic scenes. Each year a collectable T-shirt is available featuring a picture of a different musical instrument. This year, the instrument pictured is a grand piano, in honor of Symphony soloist Diane Walsh who will be playing Beethovens Fourth Concerto with the orchestra on Sept 24th and 25th. Registration fee is $15 adults and children are $10, available from the Symphony at 898-6692, online at www.northstatesymphony.org, or from participating groups.

The Arc Featured in TIME Magazine!

The Arc of the United States has found itself in front of 19 million readers, featured in the 9/12/11 issue of TIME Magazine! The special section focuses on the incredible work The Arc and 700+ (and growing!) network of Chapters does, as illustrated through the stories of some of the people The Arc serves. The Arc of Butte County has been on a mission of hope and service for over 58 years, helping people with developmental disabilities and their families to live meaningful lives, striving to advance and enhance their quality of life! Starting in 1953 as a group of parents seeking support and guidance from each other, our local Arc joined a network of state and national Arc chapters to effectively advocate for improvements in the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. The Arcs programs and services create opportunities for clients to live independently, participate in community activities, get a job and earn income, learn social skills, continue their education as well as other daily activities most people take for granted--realizing their dreams to Learn, Live, Work and Play! The Arcs programs give parents a break from day-to-day stresses of raising a special-needs child, keep families healthy, cohesive and united, offer a parent support system, provide safe, decent and affordable housing, host a place for individuals to feel safe and secure and offer a place to get a job and earn an income. The Arcs suite of services are implemented in Arc facilities, in clients homes and throughout the community. We are hoping that people in our local communities will take notice as we pick up steam in our efforts to raise awareness for The Arc, says Patti Thomas, The Arc of Butte Countys Associate Director of Community Services. Make Your Next Family Trip An Intergenerational Celebration

(NAPSI)For one in five American families, multigenerational travel is the best way to go, according to the Travel Industry Association. To help it go well for your family, consider these tips: First, choose a trip that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone in your group. Next, plan your trip a long time in advance to be sure to get all households on board and schedules aligned. Enjoy regional cuisine and get a real taste of the area in which youre traveling. The regional dishes of your destination may be a treat for the kids and stir happy memories for the older generation. Dont forget your camera. When you get home, create an online or printed album of the pictures you took to help the whole family remember the fun. Finally, choose a destination that is rich in history and on many peoples must see list, such as the Rocky Mountains. One trip many families find delightful is a train ride through Western Canada and the majestic Canadian Rockies onboard Rocky Mountaineers new SilverLeaf service. Families can experience a journey through the wild beauty of Canadas West in a single-level dome coach, boasting panoramic views, entertaining onboard commentary and delicious hot meal service at their seats. Traveling on Rocky Mountaineers First Passage to the West rail journey between Vancouver, British Columbia and Banff, Alberta, guests will journey through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, including the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. The partially domed SilverLeaf coach offers temperature-controlled comfort and boasts twice the viewing area of other coaches. Plus, its designed to let guests move around the coach and interact with other passengers without missing any of the scenery passing by. The seats can even rotate to accommodate groups of four and the trains are wheelchair accessible. Delicious, hot meals for breakfast and lunch, along with engaging and friendly onboard attendants, can make this an experience to remember fondly. The travel package includes overnight stays, with luggage delivered to the hotel and transfers to and from the train. Sightseeing, attractions, rental cars, meal plans, cruises and airline tickets can all be handled by Rocky Mountaineers reservations agentsmaking multigenerational travel easy and convenient. For more information, contact a travel professional or call Rocky Mountaineer at (800) 665-7245 or visit www.rockymountaineer.com.

Centennial of Californias Womens Right to Vote

They marched. They rallied. They addressed factory workers, and church congregations, and womens clubs. They spoke to voters in the streets. They appealed to any audience they could find who would listen. And after all the votes were counted following election day 1911, the suffragists celebrated when California became the sixth state to win the womens right to vote. To honor and celebrate their years of hard work, the League of Women Voters of Butte County has secured a traveling California Centennial Exhibit produced by the International Museum of Women and the California History Center Foundation, and will host a kick-off event, open to the public, on September 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the theater inside Bidwell Mansion Visitor Center, 525 Esplanade in Chico. Rosemary Quinn, dressed as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, will speak about Stanton and other early suffragists, and a reception with hors doeuvres and beverages will be held in partnership with Chico AAUW. The exhibit will remain at the Visitor Center for two weekends, and then will be moved to the Chico branch library at 1108 Sherman (corner of 1st Avenue ) on October 11 for further viewing. In early November, the exhibit will move to the Butte County Historical Society Museum, 1749 Spencer Ave. (at Baldwin) in Oroville, where a reception, open to the public and hosted by League, along with AAUW Oroville branch and the Butte County Historical Society, will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday evening November 4. On November 16, it will move to the Oroville branch library, 1820 Mitchell Ave. (at Lincoln), where it will be the remainder of the month. The exhibit will remain in the county through February, 2012, and will be in Durham the first two weeks of December, in Paradise most of the month of January (Gold Nugget Museum and Paradise branch library), in Gridley in late January/early February (Gridley Museum and Gridley branch library), and then back to Chico at the Bell Memorial Union on CSU campus for the remainder of its time in Butte County. Receptions/dates in those communities will be announced in coming months. Please join us in celebration and appreciation of the thousands of women and men who struggled for womens suffrage since the mid-1800s. The county coordinator for this exhibit is Eileen BurkeTrent, and to get your organization or school involved, call 846-4444 or email: e.burketrent@yahoo.com The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization that encourages citizens to play an informed and active role in government. For more information about membership in the League, or about any of its education and advocacy programs, please visit www.lwvbuttecounty.org or call 895-VOTE (8683).

While investors cannot predict future market instability, they can prepare, says Edward Jones
Preparing for Turbulence While investors cannot predict future market instability, they can prepare, says Edward Jones Recent volatility in the global markets may cause even the most seasoned investors to feel shaken up. But, according to Edward Jones, short-term market turbulence can serve as a reminder that like flying, investing is not always a smooth ride. Its natural to feel nervous when your investments look like theyre losing altitude, but its important to stay the course, said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones. The best response to market fluctuations is to keep your emotions and your investment strategy steady. Warne offers some perspective on how to keep white knuckles at bay in turbulent times: Turbulence is normal Stock market declines are a normal part of investing. According to recent research, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has dipped by five percent on average 3.4 times a year. Bigger drops occur less frequently, with corrections (10 percent or more) once a year, and bear markets (20 percent or more) every 3.5 years. Volatility happens regularly and is no reason to sell a quality investment. Fasten your seatbelt, not your parachute Bailing out at 30,000 feet isnt the best reaction to turbulence. Similarly, some investors might react by jumping in and out of the market, which can significantly impact investment performance. Historically, the best days often follow the worst days. While no one can predict what will happen in the future, getting out of the markets after the drops may mean missing any potential recoveries. Your destination determines how you travel If youre traveling from the east coast to the west coast, turbulence shouldnt cause you to land in the Midwest and walk the rest of the way. With investing, switching to the relative stability of a short-term investment can place your long-term goals at risk. Volatility in the markets should not change your goal of retiring at a specific age or providing for your childs education. Take the long view Some passengers react to turbulence better than others. Some ignore it, and others simply sleep through it. Successful long-term investors take the same approach to volatility, focusing on their long-term plans instead of day-to-day fluctuations. A solid financial strategy is key to riding out these short-term ups and downs, says Warne. You can make small adjustments along the way, but unless you experience a significant life change, its essential not to veer off course. in a new community? I say, join in. But not everyone will or can do that. That is when I decided to make new friends, but keep the old. I found Debbie Moore and FRIENDS HAIR STUDIO as I searched for friends on my computer. Theyre located behind Table Mountain Pharmacy and Kragans Auto Parts Store. I originally met her a couple of years ago when she was calling Bunco at FRSCA, where the Seniors had lunch on Myers. I was not made aware that she was an established hair dresser, or that she was the Event and Wedding Coordinator at Lake Oroville Golf & Event Center. I was even more surprised to learn this classy lady was a basketball coach at various high schools in Oroville, up until last year. When I nally caught up with Debbie Moore, my plan was to interview her, and nd out what made her tick. I now know she runs 7 days a week and has a wonderful business partner Sherri Meisinger, who keeps her on the straight and narrow (so to speak). It is not surprising to learn her hubby, Jim Moore, is the Sales and Finance Manager at Hobbie Auto Center. Of course, they want to be Friends ... Its a small world, and in Oroville, there are no strangers, just friends we have yet to meet. Dont forget, First Wednesday of each month at Dennys ... entertainment provided by Mickey Foster. Country & Western music and no cover charge. The City of Oroville purchased the State Theatre 25 years ago, and there is still lots of work to be done, and being done. There are high hopes the Pipe Organ will be up and operating by Veterans Day, November 11th, when Dave Moreno, from Sacramento chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, (ATOS) will play the organ during the 7:00 p.m. showing of Charlie Chaplins The Gold Rush. Jim Moll, President of S.T.A.G.E. asked me to remind all of you to be sure bring your annual membership dues up to date. Membership means discounted Symphony tickets. The cost to renew $25. Send your check to S.T.A.G.E, P.O. Box 2388, Oroville, CA 95965. On November 13th, The North State Symphony will be presenting AMERICAN PORTRAIT with music by Gershwin. Also featured will be young artist winner, Greg Manuel, as soloist on Liebermanns Piccolo Concerto, Movement #1. Well, thats it, for today ... please drop me a line, if you have time. I will be back next month. By the way, Have you had your Van Gooey Cake today?

Now that summer is gone, watch for the falling leaves, as Autumn creeps in ... and while you are at it, observe the change of scenery in the storefront windows and merchants shelves. Thats right! Another season has passed, and thus we gear up for the coming Holidays. Shifting inventory means sales, sales, and more sales. Come browse around and mingle with merchants, sales folks, and neighbors. Who knows, there might be music in the streets or other entertainment to amuse you. The skies in Northern California are true blue, and its still comfortable enough to participate in the festivities planned for family fun. The Birdcage Theatre opened its 28th Season (2011/2012) with a hilarious Neil Simon comedy, directed by the popular, Bill Falcon. He is noted for having the foresight to assemble an outstanding cast. In Falcons own words, They are the Cream of the Crop! A man known to have many hats and personalities, and backgrounds, Dennis Perri, played the leading role of Jake, a visionary and frustrated writer, married to Maggie, a career-girl in search of change, excitement and opportunity. Katy Ryan energized Maggie, and brought her to life. (Yes! Thats the same Katy Ryan who is associated with FEVER, an outstanding singing group who frolic on stage and off with songs of yesteryear.) Katy is married to another multitalented individual, Ted Ryan. Ted seems qualied to do anything at the Birdcage. This time he sparkled in the booth expertly managing the lighting, sound, and music. Just watching Ted Ryans face light up, each time Katy came on stage, tickled my funny bone. Of course, there was the elegant, Carol Falcon, (wife of the Director, Bill Falcon), who impressed the audience as the Jewish sister full of worldly-wisdom and sound advise. Carole claims under the direction of her hubby, Bill Falcon, she can be or do anything on stage. (A marriage made in heaven. Just wonder, do they shift roles, when they get home at night?) Sarah Bartlett Pierce played the role of the grown daughter, Molly. Her own daughter, Nichole Pierce, a high school student, radiated as Molly 10 years earlier. Supporting actresses included Barbara Daggett, who is fullling a childhood dream, by being a part of the Birdcage Theatre. She says, It may not be New Yorks Broadway, but when an audience is present, it must feel exactly the same. Allison Cardwell played Sheila, and has been with the Birdcage Theatre for the past three summers. It was a great team of professionals on stage, and at their best. Have to admit, as a writer, I relate to Jake, who visualized how the people in his own circle could be re-invented in his next Best Seller. That brings to mind: Have you purchased your season tickets to the Birdcage Theatre? It promises to be an exciting year. Coming up: An Evening of One Acts ... Oh, What a Tangled Web, a comedy by John R. Carroll, and directed by Mike Williams, and then Tracks, a drama by Peter Tarsi, directed by Susan Blood. Mark your calendar and buy your tickets early. Opening night is October 21st. As a relatively new person, living in Oroville, I was surprised when I won a prize as one of newest newcomers to attend the event at the Monday Club. I have lived in Oroville over 4 yearsdoes that mean new people moving into this community are not getting out and about, or enjoying the fruits offered in this spectacular town? So, how do Newcomers get acquainted
