Title:

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Environmental Factors and Physical Attributes Associated with
Thyroid Cancer

Introduction:

Thyroid cancer is a common type of cancer that affects the thyroid gland. There is increasing evidence
suggesting that environmental factors and physical attributes may play a role in the development of thyroid
cancer. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between
environmental factors and physical attributes with thyroid cancer.

Objective:

The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the association between
environmental factors and physical attributes and the risk of thyroid cancer. The review will aim to
synthesize the available evidence from published studies and provide a comprehensive overview of the
environmental and physical risk factors associated with thyroid cancer. The study will use a systematic
approach to identify and select relevant studies, assess the quality of the evidence, and conduct a
meta-analysis to quantify the overall effect size of the identified risk factors. The findings of this study may
inform public health policies and interventions aimed at reducing the burden of thyroid cancer by identifying
modifiable risk factors.

Methodology:

➔ Literature search

We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar,

and Cochrane, using appropriate search terms related to environmental factors and physical
attributes with thyroid cancer. We included studies that examined the association between
environmental factors and physical characteristics with thyroid cancer incidence or mortality. We
excluded studies that did not meet our inclusion criteria or had a high bias risk.

➔ Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

◆ Inclusion criteria:
● Studies that investigate the association between environmental factors or physical
attributes and thyroid cancer
● Studies that include Female (middle-aged) participants
● Studies that include Human participants
● Studies that are published in peer-reviewed journals or other credible sources
● Studies that are available in the English language
◆ Exclusion criteria:
● Studies that do not investigate the association between environmental factors or
physical attributes and thyroid cancer
● Studies that use an animal or in vitro model
● Studies that are not relevant to the research question
● Studies that are not available in full-text format
● Studies that are published in non-peer-reviewed sources, such as conference
proceedings, abstracts, or dissertations.

➔ Data Extraction

We extracted data from the included studies, including study design, study population, exposure to
environmental factors and physical attributes, and thyroid cancer outcomes.

Results:

Our search yielded a total of 1192 potentially relevant studies.

● Pubmed-386
● Cochrane-806
After screening and applying our inclusion and exclusion criteria, we included 43 studies in our systematic
review and meta-analysis.
● Pubmed-39
● Cochrane-4

The included studies had a total of:

● Pubmed
○ Population:2679
○ Intervention:260551
○ Outcome:71302
● Cochrane
○ Population:9714
○ Intervention:911228
○ Outcome:220223

The studies investigated a range of environmental factors and physical attributes, including exposure to
radiation, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical activity.

1. For Pubmed:
● 386-After PICO search
● 205-Using Filters (181 records removed)
● 180-Additional Filter(25 records removed)
● 36-After manually reading we finalize this many records for our case study. (144 records
removed).

2. For Cochrane:
● 806-AFter PICO search
● 150-Using Filters like time etc (656 records removed)
● 5-After manually reading the PICO and abstract of papers we finalize this many records for
our case study. (145 records removed).
PRISMA model:

We followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) model to
ensure transparent reporting of our systematic review and meta-analysis. We included a PRISMA flow
diagram to show the study selection process and a PRISMA checklist to ensure that we reported all
relevant information in our systematic review and meta-analysis.
