Top engineering branches

COMPUTER SCIENCE / INFORMATION SCIENCE

One of the most booming industries today is the IT sector, where software
engineers are hired by MNCs and also have freelancing opportunities to
develop applications and websites for clients. If you have a logical mind and
would like to have a secure career, these branches are for you. Job positions
include embedded systems computer engineer, Machine Learning Computer
engineer, data analyst, blockchain developer, full-stack developer, information
security analyst, information system manager, eCommerce manager, computer
system analyst, and so on.

Average entry level salary: 5.08 lakhs per annum

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

As there is a global chip crisis, many opportunities will open up for graduates
in electronics and related branches, especially with the current ecosystem of
“Make in India” being nurtured by the government. An electronics and
communication engineer can work in aviation and avionics, embedded systems,
consumer electronics, electricity plant, manufacturing, distribution,
communication & telecommunication, computer application, radio &
television, analytical equipment manufacturing and offshore industries.

Average entry level salary: 4.68 lakhs per annum

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

Job descriptions include Aircraft production managers, Aerospace designer

checker, Mechanical design engineers, Assistant technical officers or Thermal
design engineers. Presently, Aerospace engineering courses are offered in
nearly 50 BTech Aerospace Engineering colleges in India. There is also scope in
building space machines such as satellites and rockets for candidates who are
highly passionate and prove their worth.

Average entry level salary: 5 lakhs per annum

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Chemical engineering graduates can find employment in the private sector in

industries like Biotechnology Sector, Cement Factories, Fertilizer Factories,
Food Processing Units, Petrochemicals, Petroleum Refineries, Pharmaceutical
Industries, etc. The salary for chemical engineers is quite high, but the campus
placements are not great in regular colleges (there is excellent placement at
IITs and NITs), which is why doing a master’s degree after this would help you
gain better knowledge in the field and also broaden job opportunities.

Average entry level salary: 5.18 lakhs per annum

AGRICULTURE ENGINEERING

There is a lot of potential for agricultural engineers, they can work as technical
experts on engineering projects in banks and financial corporations. In India,
after you complete B. Tech in Agriculture Engineering, you can find many
Government jobs – such as IBPS Agriculture Field Officer (AFO), Indian Forest
Service (IFS) Officer and more. However, a keen interest in the field is required
in order to achieve heights in your career. Although the salary for beginners is
lean, there is steady growth in this sector if you get into the right organisation.

Average entry level salary: 3 lakhs per annum

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING

Exploration for and production of oil and gas is one of the biggest industries in
the world. Petroleum Engineering is an exciting career with opportunities to
travel and work overseas and also help ensure sustainability of resources, while
conserving the environment for future generations. The schedule required of
many petroleum engineers is a significant drawback of the career. Many
petroleum engineers work far more than 40 hours a week, some logging 50 or
60 hours a week, but the pay scale as you grow in your career is very
promising.

Average entry level salary: 8.1 lakhs per annum

CS (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING)

The major industries using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning
(ML) include Agriculture, Education and Infrastructure, Healthcare, Transport,
Banking, Cyber Security, Manufacturing, Entertainment, Hospitality, and others.
This is a recent addition to the already existing branches, and only few
colleges offer this course as of today. But there is no doubt that this field of
study and development is here to stay for years to come, and becoming an
expert in this will provide a really good start to your career, and the growth
and rise in opportunities and pay scale of a smart engineer with this degree is
tremendous.

Average entry level salary: 8 lakhs per annum

CS (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND DATA SCIENCE)

The job market for data science and AI professionals is booming across the
world, making it a desirable career choice. AI engineers and data scientists are
both intertwined job roles and have the potential to help a professional
leverage rewarding career growth opportunities. The scope of Artificial
Intelligence in India is promising. Especially in a developing country like India,
there is scope for huge data-related operations such as data scientists, data
analytics, big data engineers, big data managers, and data architects. Soon,
there would hardly be any industry or sector which would be untouched by this
powerful tool in India. The pay scale increases with increase in work
experience. Data scientists have a huge demand in the current market and has
one of the highest paying jobs for freshers specialized in this area.

Average entry level salary: 6-8 lakhs per annum

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Skilled mechanical engineers have many opportunities in aerospace,

automobile, chemical manufacturing plants, oil exploration, railway coach
factory, research, and development. The placement opportunities are not great
as of the current trend for core branches in regular colleges in India, as the
companies tend to hire majority of their workforce from top institutes.

ROBOTICS

Robotic Engineers have a wide range of applications, including space

exploration, entertainment, banking, medicine, and healthcare, among others.
The following are some of the top Robotic Engineer recruiters: TATA, DRDO,
BARC, DiFACTO Robotics and Automation, BHEL, NASA, Tech Mahindra Ltd,
Kuka Robotics, ISRO, etc. However, the degree is very specific and a
specialisation in this domain is preferred by many students after taking up a
more traditional degree with a wider scope.
