3. A probability distribution function for every element of a discrete random variable,

x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 is as below

x
 , x = 1,3,5
a
P ( X = x) =  2
 x , x = 2, 4, 6

a
(a) Find the value of a. [2 marks]
(b) Determine P ( x − 3  1) . [3 marks]
(c) P ( X  4.5 ) [2 marks]

4. Past record showed that 82% of tax payers used e-filing to submit their yearly incomes in
2022. In that year, 70% of the tax payers are government servants and the rest are private
employees. It is known that among the private employees, 75% of them use e-filing.
(a) Construct a probability tree diagram to represent the above information. Hence, find
the probability that the tax payer uses e-filing given that the tax payer is a
government servant. [4 marks]
(b) Find the probability that the tax payer is private employee and does not use e-filing.
[2 marks]
(c) Find the probability that the tax payer is government servant or uses e-filing.
[3 marks]
(d) Determine whether the events that ‘the tax payer is government servant’ and ‘the tax
payer uses e-filing’ are independent. Give reasons for your answer. [3 marks]

5. The table below shows the purchases and sales of eight shops in a month.
Purchases 305 454 522 470 382 563 414 344
(RM’000)
Sales 405 600 683 612 573 702 584 521
(RM’000)
(a) Evaluate  x ,  y ,  x ,  y 2 and  xy
2
[2 marks]
(b) Obtain the equation of linear regression line y = a + bx . Give your answer correct to 3
decimal places. Hence, interpret the value of b. [5 marks]
(c) Estimate the amount of sales if purchases of RM550 000 is made. [3 marks]
(d) Calculate and interpret the Pearson correlation coefficient. [3 marks]

6. The lifespan of a car spark plug is found to be normally distributed with mean 4.5 years
and standard deviation 1.2 years. If a spark plug is randomly chosen, show that the
probability the spark plug will last less than four years is 0.3372. [4 marks]
Given that a mechanic wants to buy 200 spark plugs.
(a) Estimate the probability that less than 80 of spark plugs bought will last less than four
years. [5 marks]
(b) If the probability that at most k of the spark plugs will last less than four years is
0.9798, determine the value of k. [5 marks]

7. In a large shipment of durians from a particular orchard, it is known that 3% of the

durians are unripe. Upon arrival of a particular shipment at a distribution centre, random
samplings with replacement are conducted.
(a) Calculate the probability of getting at most one unripe durian in a sample of size 40.
[4 marks]
(b) Determine the probability of getting one to three unripe durians in a sample of size
50. [4 marks]
(c) In a sample of size n, the probability of getting at least one unripe durian is less than
0.6. Calculate the value of n. [8 marks]
