This is beginner course but it covers engineering aspects of electric

COURSE OBJECTIVE
● This course introduces the concepts of Automobiles.
● The course will mainly focus on detailed introduction to all the parts of Vehicle and only
basics of motors and Battery i.e. power plant of vehicle.
● In this course students will learn about, Chassis components like Steering, suspension,
tyres, Brakes, frame, transmission system, frames and vehicle layout.

Module I- Electric Vehicle
Evolution of electric and Hybrid Vehicle, Electrics vehicles and its need,
Classification of EV, Energy sources. Introduction to electric motors and control 6
system, configuration of electric vehicles, performance of EV, charging, SoH and
SoC estimation and self-discharge.
Module-II Hybrid and Fuel cell EV
Working principle of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), hybridization, drive

configuration of HEV’s, performance of HEV, Fuel cells, working of FCEV,
comparison of EV’s with conventional vehicles. Hybrid vehicles in India.
Module-III EV- Subsystems-I (Frame, Steering and Suspension systems
Introduction, Classification of Automobiles, Types of Chassis with reference to
Frames, Non-frames Power Plant Locations and Drive. Types of Cars, manikin,
seating position, cargo position. Basics of Steering System, Electronic power 10
steering, steer-by-wire system, front wheel geometry and its significance with various
characteristics, Need of Suspension system, Macpherson strut, double wishbone,
semi-trailing arm, Multi link suspension, air suspension.
Module-IV EV-Subsystems-II (Transmission, Braking and Tyres )
Basics of Transmission system of vehicle, single speed transmission, multi-speed
transmission, basics of brake system, ABS, Regenerative braking, one pedal driving
and its working. Basic Requirements of Wheels and Tyres, Types of Road Wheels, 10
Construction of Wheel Assembly, Wheel Balancing, Tyre Construction,
Types-Tubeless, Crossly, Radial Types, Hybrid Tyres, Sizes and Designation, Aspect
Ratio, Tyre Tread Pattern and noise generation, Tyre Inflation Pressure, Types of
Tyre Wear and their Causes, Selection of Tyre under Different Applications, Factors
affecting Tyre Performance- effect of camber on types of tyres.
Module-V Basics of Vehicle Dynamics
Forces acting on Vehicle, Rolling resistance, aerodynamics of vehicle, uphill 5
resistance, Power and torque to accelerate, gyroscopic couple and its effect,

On completion of this course, the students will be able to
● Understand the various categories of EV
● Analyze the hybridization of vehicle and its various configurations
● Describe the vehicle frames, body layouts, steering and suspension systems
● Evaluate different types wheels & tyres as per vehicle requirement
● Understand the basics of vehicle dynamics
