CO2 – SNOW APPLICATION FOR PLASTIC
PARTS CLEANING
Principle of CO2-Snow Cleaning
The CO2-snow jet cleaning systems use solid CO2 ice crystals as
a jet medium. With its combination of mechanical, thermal and
chemical properties, CO2 snow is able to detach and remove
surface contamination.

The liquid CO2 expands as it exists to become a mixture of snow

and gas at the nozzle outlet which is accelerated to supersonic
velocity by compressed air.

By using compressed air for acceleration of the CO2-snow

crystals, the CO2-consumption is significantly lower than with
one-component nozzle systems – and that‘s with an increased
Functional Principle: performance.

Embrittlement the contamination through rapid cooling, thermal

expansion
Detachment due to the transmitted forces of pressure and shearing
Dissolving of adsorption bonds (solvent)
Rinsing (increase in volume of approx. factor 500 during sublimation) Source: ACP

Requirements for a CO2 – Robot booth

Operation of the booth must be in underpressure

Soundproofed booth design (noise level outside the booth < 75 dBA, noise level on the nozzles
approx. 105 -110 dBA)

Air return plenum under the conveyor

No nonventilated areas in the booth

Safety protected booth doors and booth entrance

The MAK values must be controlled inside and outside the booth with CO2 sensors, category 3,
redundant

Ionization behind the CO2-Booth
As with CO2-application the plastic parts may become electrically charged and thus may absorb dust from the
surrounding atmosphere, it is necessary to blow-off the parts by ionized compressed air directly behind the CO2-
booth.
