Note:
Whether the cover is open or not does not affect the status reported by the paper detector.

Chapter 2
Handling
This chapter describes handling and packing for the TM‐T20II.

Safety Precautions on Handling

CAUTION:
❏ Do not pull the paper out when the roll paper cover is closed.

❏ Because the thermal elements of the print head and driver IC are easy to break, do
not touch them with any metal objects.

❏ Since the areas around the print head become very hot during and just after
printing, do not touch them.

❏ Do not open the roll paper cover when printing, or the mechanism may get
damaged.

❏ Do not touch the surface of the print head because dust and dirt can stick to the
surface and damage the elements.

❏ Thermal paper containing Na+, K+, and Cl– ions can harm the print head thermal
elements. Therefore, be sure to use only the specified paper.

❏ Label paper cannot be used.

External Option Buzzer Installation

This section explains how to install the external option buzzer (OT‐BZ20).

The external option buzzer becomes available by connecting it to the drawer kick connector, and
change the ʺExternal option buzzerʺ setting to ʺenabled.ʺ
(“Software setting mode” on page 3‐5)

CAUTION:
❏ If  the ʺExternal option buzzerʺ setting is set to ʺenabledʺ in the software settings, the drawer cannot
be used because the pulse output is not performed to the drawer kick connector pin.

❏ When the external option buzzer is used, it is not allowed to connect both external option buzzer and
drawer to the printer by using a branching connector or similar.

❏ When the external option buzzer is connected after the printer is turned on, or the external option
buzzer is removed and reconnected while the printer is on, the buzzer does not sound. When using the
external option buzzer, make sure to connect it before turning on the printer, and do not remove it
while the printer is on.

❏ Make sure to secure the external option buzzer to the printer with the included fixing tape.

❏ Do not secure the external option buzzer to the ejection surface for roll paper. For recommended
securing points, see the recommended securing points below.

❏ When applying fixing tape for securing the external option buzzer and/or the printer, make sure to do
it after cleaning the surfaces to where the tape is applied and after the surface gets dried up.

❏ When securing the external option buzzer, do it with the volume control nozzle knob pointing to one
of the sides or downwards so as not to let in liquids or similar.

❏ To prevent trouble, do not spill any liquids such as water, oil, or chemicals intentionally over the
printer. Also, take care not to let such liquids spill over the printer.

Chapter 4
Disassembly and Assembly
This chapter describes assembly and disassembly procedures for the TM‐T20II.

Notes for Disassembly and Assembly

Always observe the following precautions when disassembling and assembling the product.

CAUTION:
❏ Always remove the power supply unit from the printer before working. Power flows to
the internal circuit boards even if you turn the printer off with the power switch. You
may damage the printer if you work while the power supply is still attached.

❏ Remove all peripheral equipment connected to the printer before starting work.

❏ Connect or disconnect the flexible flat cable (FFC) straight into or out of the
connector to prevent problems that may result in a malfunction.

❏ Wear a grounded wrist band when handling the internal circuit boards to prevent
damage from static electricity.

❏ When removing an internal circuit board, place it on an anti-static rubber sheet or

similar surface to prevent damage from static electricity.

❏ Be careful not to subject the circuit boards to shock or vibration, because this may
damage them.

❏ To prevent contamination that may result in a malfunction, do not touch the circuit
board or cable terminals with your hands.

❏ Hold circuit boards only by their edges.

❏ Do not touch the connector pins of the FFC.

Removing the Thermal Print Head Assembly

CAUTION
❏ Note that the thermal head becomes very hot during operation. Be sure to wait
about 10 minutes after turning printer power off before beginning the following
procedure.

❏ When performing this procedure, be sure to use a grounded wrist band or take other
measures to protect against electrostatic charge. Failure to do so can result in
damage to the thermal head.

❏ Never touch the thermal element (the area that looks like it is marked with a thin
black line) of the thermal head with your hands. Doing so can damage the heating
element.

❏ Whenever there is dirt or any other foreign matter on the thermal head, clean it off
with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol.

1. Remove the autocutter cover (101). (See page 4‐3.)

2. Remove the roll paper cover unit (1003). (See page 4‐4.)

Align the two dowels of the pressurizing plate (502) with the two notches of the main unit.

CAUTION:
Be sure to hold the two head hold springs (505) while removing the pressurizing plate
(502). Otherwise, the head hold springs (505) may suddenly fly out, creating the
danger of eye injury.

8. While holding the head hold springs (505) so that they do not fly out, remove the
pressurizing plate (502) and two head hold springs (505).

Chapter 6
Maintenance
This chapter provides information on how to maintain the TM‐T20II in its optimum operating
condition.

Cleaning

CAUTION:
Never clean the product with alcohol, benzine, thinner, or other such solvents. Doing so
may damage or break the parts made of plastic and rubber. However you can clean
the thermal print head with alcohol.

Cleaning the Printer Case

Be sure to turn off the printer, and wipe the dirt off the printer case with a dry cloth or a damp
cloth.

Cleaning the Print Head

To keep good print quality, it is necessary to clean the print head regularly (approximately every
3 months). Perform the cleaning of the print head as follows:

CAUTION:
When cleaning the print head or the frame on the side of the print head, do not touch it
immediately after printing because it may be very hot. Wait for a while until the
temperature goes down.

Do not damage the print head by touching it with any metal objects.

1. Power off the printer.

2. Open the roll paper cover.

Rev. A Maintenance 6-1

3. Remove any dirt on the thermal element of the print head with a cotton swab slightly
moistened with an alcohol solvent (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol).

Notes:
• Depending on the roll paper used, paper dust may stick to the platen roller and paper detector.
To remove the paper dust, clean the platen roller and paper detector with a cotton swab
moistened with water.

• Be sure to turn on the printer after alcohol solvent or water is completely dried off.
