Introduction

Do you believe that alerting us about impending disasters is the wisest course of action? Yes
would be the response. We should always be aware of when something will happen or whether it
is already happening. Since these earthquakes can happen unexpectedly, we consider creating an
earthquake alarm. This project interacts with Ohm’s Law in real life and seismology that can be
investigated in physics.

Materials

MATERIAL QUANTITY MEASUREMENT

Plywood Base 2pcs 8x6x2 inch
PVC Pipe 1pc 8 inch
Plywood 1pc 3.7x2 inch
Wire (Alambre) 1pc 8 inch
Wood Base (Inside) 4pcs 1.5x2 inch
Battery 1pc 9v
Nut 2pcs #1
Buzzer 1pc 5v
Battery Holder 1pc -
Switch 1pc -
Nail 6pcs 1”
Copper Wire - 1 meter
Thumbtacks 8pcs -
Black Colored Paper 1pc 2.75x8.5 inch
Methodology

I. The researchers purchased the materials from various stores with specific measurements
that were used in creating the earthquake alarm.
II. Before we proceed to start creating the project, we made sure that the place will be
cleaned and organized.
III. Cut the plywood to make 2 pcs of 8x6 inches, and then cut 2x2 of the wood to make a
4pcs of 1.5x2x2 size to serve as the box’s corner.
IV. To build a post, drill the plywood (about an inch) to put the PVC pipe and attach it with
glue stick to become stable.
V. Drill again (the small plywood in the top) to create a hole as for the passage of the wire.
VI. For the wiring, we glued it to the battery holder and attached the wire to insert it under
the hole inside PVC pipe.
VII. Next, we used soldering iron to connect the copper wire to the switch, and connected
another end to the buzzer. To create an electric line, we twisted the two wires. We then
attached the copper wire to the Nut and hang it.
VIII. After connecting the wires from the two end points (Switch and buzzer) together with the
twisted wire, it will also be connected to the nut and the battery. As the hanging nut
responds to the vibration, the electric current produced by the battery will trigger the
sound of the buzzer.

Analysis

As it is known, an earthquake is a deadly and dangerous natural phenomenon that is

happening abruptly without any warning. In general, the proposed project “Earthquake Alarm”
touches on the topics: Ohm’s Law and Seismology. Ohm’s Law shows the relationship of
current, voltage, and resistance in a circuit. Seismology, on the other hand, is the study of
earthquakes and seismic waves as they move around the Earth.

The earthquake alarm will only sound if it detects any kind of vibration. Furthermore, the
pendulum attached to the wire will only swing when the base moves and is unaffected by air.
This type of project will greatly improve everyone's safety. It will serve as a warning and raise
public awareness, resulting in less damage and casualties.
