Fault current calculation for locations 1 to 6

FAULT CURRENT AT LOCATION – 1

2.5 MVA rated current on 433 volts side = 2500 X 10³ = 3478 Amps considering 6.25 % of Z
√3 415

Fault current will be 3478 X 100 = 55.649 kA

6.25

Transferring source impedance on to LV side =2500 X 100 = 0.714 %

350 X 1000

Considering this fault current on LV side will be = 3478 X 100 = 49.942 kA (at Transformer terminals)
(6.25 + 0.714)

To reach location – 1, 20Mts of 4000Amps bus duct is to be considered

Data considered are as follows.

Bus duct length = 20 Mts
Material Aluminium
Rating: 4000 Amps
Cross Section: 5000 mm2
Resistivity of Aluminium Bus bar: 36 mΩmm2 / Mtr length

Total bus duct impedance = 36 X 20 = 0.144Ω X 10-3

5000

% impedance will be
100,000 X 2500 X 0.144 =0.209 %
1000 X (415)2

So Fault current at location-1 = 48.487 kA as shown below

3478 X 100 = 347800 = 48.487 kA

6.25+0.714+0.209 7.173

FAULT CURRENT AT LOCATION – 2

To reach location - 2, two nos of breakers & B/B inside main PCC panel have to be considered,

Data considered
Breaker impedance @ 0.15 mΩ/ Breaker
Total travel of Bus Bars =4+2 Mtrs
4mts of 5000mm2 and 2mts of 3200mm2

Impedance of 4mtrs length = 36 X 4 =0.0288mΩ

5000

Impedance of 2mtrs length = 36 X 2 =0.0225mΩ
3200

Total impedance =0.15 X 2= 0.3 +0.0288+0.0255mΩ

=0.3513mΩ OR 0.0003513Ω

% impedance = 100,000 X 2500 X 0.0003513 = 0. 509 %

(415)2

Fault current at location-2 will be

= 3478 X 100 = 347800 = 45.274 kA

7.173 + 0.509 7.682

FAULT CURRENT AT LOCATION – 3

To reach location - 3, 100mtrs of 8 runs, 3.5 cores, and 400mm 2 cables have to be taken into consideration.

Cable impedance will be AC resistance2 Reactance2

As per cable data resistance = 0.1 Ω / Km

Reactance = 0.0704 Ω/Km

Hence impedance = 0.1 2 0.07042 = 0.1222 Ω / Km

For 100 Mtrs = 0.1222 x 100 = 0.0122 Ω/cable

1000

Since there are 8 runs in parallel effective impedance will be = 0.122 = 0.001525 Ω
8

% impedance = 100,000 X 2500 X 0.001525 = 2.2136 %

(415)2

Fault current at location-3 will be

= 3478 X 100 = 35.166 kA

7.682 + 2.2136

However the fault current seen by MPDB breakers will be much less than this because of the breaker impedance.

Considering this the fault current seen MPDB incomer breaker will be,

3478 X 100 = 387800 = 34.40 kA

7.682 + 2.2136+ 0.2177 10. 11

FAULT CURRENT AT LOCATION – 4

To reach location - 4, 2 nos of breakers are to be considered along with B/B inside the MPDB.

Data considered
Breaker impedance 0.17 mΩ/ Breaker
Total travel of Bus Bars = 6mts @3200mm2
Breaker Impedance = 0.17 x 2 = 0.34 mΩ

Bus bar Impedance = 36 x 6 = 0.0675 Ω x 10-3

3200

Total impedance = 0.000340 + 0.000675 = 0.001015 Ω

% impedance will be
100,000 X 2500 X 0.001015 = 1.473 %
(415)2
Fault current at location-4 will be 30.026 kA

= 3478 X 100 = 347800 = 30.026 kA

10.11 + 1.473 11.583

FAULT CURRENT AT LOCATION – 5

Consider 5 runs of 3.5 core 400mm2, 60 Mtrs,

Impedance will be 0.1222 Ω / km / per cable
Since we have 60 Mtrs total impedance for 60 Mtrs of 5 runs will be

0.1222 X 60 = 0.00146 Ω
1000 x 5

% impedance will be
100,000 X 2500 X 0.00146 = 2.119 %
(415)2
Fault current,
= 3478 X 100 = 347800 = 25.383 kA
11.583 + 2.119 13.702

FAULT CURRENT AT LOCATION – 6

To reach location - 6, we have to consider, 2 breakers in series

Hence breaker impedance @ 0.18 mΩ / breaker will be 0.18 x 2 = 0.36 mΩ
% impedance will be
100,000 X 2500 X 0.00036 = 0.522 %
(415)2
Fault current,
= 3478 X 100 = 347800 = 24.451 kA
13.702 + 0.522 14.224
