    The skeletal system consists of bones that provide structure and support to the body. Bones are composed of an outer cortical bone layer and inner spongey bone layer. There are two main types of bones - irregular bones which are not uniform in shape, and flat bones which provide protection. Bones are also categorized as either axial bones that provide foundational structure, or appendicular bones that help with movement. The internal structure of bones contains osteons, central canals, and lamellae which resist stress and house blood vessels and nerves.
