THE RITE OF MARRIAGE
Introductory Rites
Entrance
At the appointed time, the bridal procession begins accompanied by nuptial music or songs.
When the Bride, the Groom and the entourage have taken their respective places, the Mass
begins.
Commentator: Good day, brothers and sisters. Today, we gather

as a community to participate in the Holy Eucharist and to witness
the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony
between_________________ and ____________________. As their
Catholic Christian Family, we remind them that they are called to a
life of holiness and fidelity as husband and wife. Let us rejoice and
ask God’s blessing for them and their future children. Please,
everybody stand to welcome the Mass Celebrant.

Then the Priest, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:

Then follows the Penitential Act, to which the priest invites the faithful, saying:

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading
(Genesis 2:18–24)
Then the reader goes to the ambo and reads the first reading, while all sit and listen.
Reader: A reading from the Book of Genesis.
Then the Lord God said: “It is not good for the man to be
alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” So the Lord God
formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of
the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call
them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The
man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all the
wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.
So the Lord God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was
asleep, he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The
Lord God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from

the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: “this one,
at last, is bone of my bones and flesh from my flesh; this one shall
be called ‘woman,’ for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his
wife, and the two of them become one body.
To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

Second Reading
(Ephesians 5:21–32)
Reader: A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.
Beloved, be subordinate to one another out of reverence for

Christ. Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of his wife just as Christ is the head of
the Church, he himself the Savior of the body. As the Church is
subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their
husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ
loved the Church and handed himself over for her. Husbands should
love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves
himself. For this reason a man shall leave father and mother and be
joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a
great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the Church.

Rite of Marriage

light the bridal candles. The bride and the Groom please stand for
the Rite of Marriage. May I request the principal sponsors to please
stand beside the couple.
Allocution
Priest: Dearly beloved ________________and_________________,

you are here today to seal your love with an eternal bond before the
church. I assure you of the prayers of our community, that God pour
his abundant blessings on your love and help you carry out the duties
of the married state. And you (addressing the congregation), dear
brothers and sisters, may I ask you to help them with your prayers
and accept them as a new couple in our Christian Community.

Blessing of the Rings and the Arrhae

Priest: Dear brothers and sisters, let us now pray for the Church
and for our newly-wedded couple, whose marriage reflects the union
of Christ and His Church. For every petition we will say:
Lord, hear our prayer.
Reader: Let us pray for the Church which is the bride of Christ that
she may always be faithful in her mission of spreading the Good

News of our salvation and Christ’s love for us. We pray.
People: Lord, hear our prayer.
Reader: Let us pray for our government leaders that they may
become God’s instrument in protecting the family and defend life at
all cost. We pray.
Reader: Let us pray for all the needs of our brothers and sisters,
the sick, the handicapped, the prisoners and all those abandoned by
their love ones, that through their presence in our community we
may be enlightened and show our charity with love. We pray.
People: Lord hear our prayer.

Commentator: May I request the Veil Sponsors to please lay the

veil over the couple and the Cord Sponsors to follow suit.
The Veil Sponsors lay the white veil over the head of the Bride and the shoulders of the Groom.
Finally, the Cord Sponsors place the cord over the shoulders of the couple in an 8-form.
Preparation of the Altar and Gifts
When all this has been done, the Offertory Chant bedins. Meanwhile, the ministers place the
corporal, the purificator, the chalice, the pall and the Missal on the altar.
It is desirable that the faithful express their participation by making an offering,
bringing forward bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist and perhaps other gifts to
relive the needs of the Church and of the poor.
The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly raised above
the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:
Priest:
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness
we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work
of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.
Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.

If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end,
the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God for ever.
The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:
Deacon/Priest:
By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the
divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
The priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands,
saying in a low voice:
Priest:
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation , for through your goodness
we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of
human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end,

After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, may our

Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, and washes his hands, saying

Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he

In Eucharistic Prayer II, after the words and all the clergy, the following is added:

COMMUNION RITE
The Lord’s Prayer
After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Priest, with hands joined, says

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to
say:

With hands extended, the Priest alone continues, saying
Nuptial Blessing
After the Our Father the prayer DELIVER US is omitted. The priest, standing and facing the bride
and the bridegroom invokes upon them God’s blessing, and this is never omitted.
In the invitation, if one or both of the spouses will not be receiving communion, the words in
parenthesis are omitted. In the prayer, the words in parenthesis may be omitted if it seems that
circumstances suggest it, for example, if the bride and bridegroom are advanced in years.
The bride and bridegroom approach the altar or, if appropriate,
they remain at their place and kneel.
The priest with hands joined calls upon those present to pray saying:
Priest: Let us pray to the Lord for his bride and groom who come to
the altar as they begin their married life, that (partaking of the body
and blood of Christ) they may always be bound together by love for
one another

And all pray in silence for a while.
Then, the Priest, with hands extended over the bride and bridegroom, continues:
Holy Father,
who formed man in your own image,
male and female you created them,
so that as husband and wife, united in body and heart,
they might fulfill their calling in the world;
O God, who, to reveal the great design you formed in your love,
willed that the love of spouses for each other
should foreshadow the covenant you graciously made with
your people,
so that, by fulfillment of the sacramental sign,
the mystical marriage of Christ with his Church
might become manifest
in the union of husband and wife among your faithful;
Graciously stretch out your right hand

The prayer Lord Jesus Christ is omitted, and The peace of the Lord is said immediately.
Then the bride and bridegroom and all present offer a sign, in keeping with local
custom, that expresses peace, communion and charity.

The Priest , turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds

Then if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Priest, adds

The Priest genuflects , takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above the
chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the
world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
And together with the people he adds once:
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only
say the word and my soul shall be healed.
The Priest, facing the altar, says quietly:
Priest:
May the Body of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ.
Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:
May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.

And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.
Commentator: Please be seated. Those who wish to receive Holy

Communion may come forward.
First, the Priest gives communion to the couple possibly on both kinds of Body and Blood. Then,
he gives Holy Communion to the people.
After this, he takes the paten or ciborium and approaches the communicants. The Priest raises a
host slightly and shows it to each of the communicants, saying:
Priest:
The Body of Christ.
The communicant replies.
Communicant:
Amen.
Commentator: May I ask the Cord and Veil Sponsors to remove

the cord and the veil.

The sponsors remove the cord and the veil.
Commentator: Please, all stand for the final prayer.
Prayer After Communion
Priest:
Let us pray…
Having been made partakers at your table,

we pray, O Lord,
that those who are united by the Sacrament of Marriage
may always hold fast to you
and proclaim your name to the world.

All pray in silence with the Priest for a while, unless silence has just been observed. Then the
Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer after Communion, at the end of which the people
acclaim:

Amen.
Concluding Rites
Admonition
Priest: ____________________ and ___________________, now

that you have received the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony, I admonish
you to remain faithful to one another.
Priest: ________________ (Bride), love your husband and be a

good housewife; persevere in faith and love and holiness

Solemn Blessing

The Priest, with hands extended over the bride and bridegroom, says:
Priest: May God the all-powerful Father grant you his joy and
bless you in your children.

Priest: May the Only Begotten Son of God stand by you with
compassion in good times and in bad.
People: Amen.
Priest: May the Holy Spirit of God always pour forth his love into
your hearts.
People: Amen.
And he blesses all the people, adding:
Priest: And may almighty God bless all of you, who are gathered
here, the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Dismissal
Then the Deacon, or the Priest himself, with hands joined and facing the people, says:
Priest:
Go forth, the Mass is ended.
The people reply:

Thanks be to God.
Then the Priest venerates the altar as usual with a kiss, as at the beginning. After making a
profound bow with the ministers, he withdraws.
Priest: You may now kiss the bride.
Commentator: Let us give the newly married couple a big round of

applause.

Signing of the Marriage Contract
Commentator: Please all be seated, while the Bride, the Groom,

the Priest and the Sponsors sign the Marriage Contract.
