complete my paper on medical devices in accordance with the allotted time.
We have compiled this paper as one of the tasks to complete an assignment in the English
course at the DIII Nursing Study Program, Blora Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health, Semarang. In
preparing this paper, we have tried to achieve maximum results.
This paper was only able to be completed because we received a lot of help and support. For
that, we do not forget to thank:
1. Mr. Teguh Wahyudi, MN, a lecturer in English courses, who provided us with supporting
material and guidance.

 CAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND
Medical devices (alkes) are an important component in health services in addition to drugs.
Medical devices function to diagnose and treat disease as well as maintain and even improve health. In
addition to its social function, medical devices also have an economic function, namely medical devices
become commodities that have promising value, especially in ASEAN, especially Indonesia. The
market for the national medical device industry this year is estimated to reach Rp 13.5 trillion or around
8%, while the other 92% is still dominated by imported products. This means that the industrial market
for imported medical devices is estimated to reach Rp 168.75 trillion. In addition, the Ministry of Health
(Kemenkes) also claims that 92% of medical device distribution permits are still controlled by foreign
products. This figure is a fantastic number to be used as a reference by distributors of imported medical
devices to dominate the market. However, this is also not easy to achieve because there are so many
choices of products and brands from various manufacturers originating from various countries in the
world such as European countries, Japan, the United States and China.
Medical devices consist of various types including electromedical, non-electromedical, and in
vitro diagnostic medical devices. Electromedical medical devices are medical devices whose working
systems use electronic principles, or contain electrical elements. While non-electromedical medical
devices are medical devices that are not related to electricity or electronics. And an in vitro medical
device is a medical device that has a specific function, namely as a tool for diagnosing a patient's
disease. In Indonesia, people are already paying more attention to health problems that are often
experienced so that their attention to the use of medical devices that can help diagnose a condition of
the body has also increased.
There are many types of medical devices made of metal, cloth, rubber, liquid or glass. These
tools have their respective functions. These tools can help the world of health in treating patients.
Medical devices include goods, instruments or other tools including each component, part or equipment
that are produced, sold or intended for use in maintenance and care, diagnosis, recovery, repair, healing
and others (Hartono, 1985). All medical devices that come in direct contact with patients can be a source
of infection. Therefore, sufficient supply of sterile items plays an important role in reducing the spread
of disease in health care.
Medical devices (RI Law No. 36 of 2009 concerning health) are instruments, apparatus,
machines, implants containing drugs, which are used to prevent, diagnose, cure and alleviate disease,
treat sick people and restore health in humans and or to form structures and improve body function.
B. PROBLEM FORMULATION

3. What are the benefits of these medical devices?
C. PURPOSE
Our goal in compiling this paper is besides fulfilling our assignments in lectures, so that we in
particular and all students in general are able to understand medical devices and their functions

DISCUSSION

Various kinds of medical devices

Medical devices are instruments, machines, which do not contain drugs that are used to prevent,
diagnose, cure and alleviate disease, in every health service. Various kinds of medical devices are made
of metal, rubber, liquid materials, glass and cloth. The following types of medical devices include:
1. Eskap and wrapping eskap

Escaps and escap wrappers are medical devices used for cold compresses and are made of cloth
which functions to cover the escap when used for cold compresses with the aim that water does not
directly touch the skin of the patient who is being cold compressed.
2. Bed sheets

Bed sheets is often referred to as laken. Sheets or linen is a medical device made of cloth which
functions to cover the mattress as a whole to provide comfort to the patient who is on the patient's bed.
3. Laken sticks

 The thread stick is a medical device made of cloth that is above the sheet which has the function
of providing comfort to the patient so that it doesn't stick when he is lying on the bed. This thread stick
is placed in the middle of the sheet, not too down and not too up. The size of the laken stick is smaller
than the size of the sheet.
4. Washcloth

A washcloth is a medical device made of cloth which functions to perform an action of cleaning
all parts of the patient's body while lying on the bed using clean water, soap, and or an antiseptic
solution.
5. Gauze

Gauze is a medical device used for major/minor surgery, circumcision, wound closure, and
baby navel dressing. Clean the wound from dirt, bacteria and particles to prevent infection. Gently dry
the skin around the wound. Cover the wound from dirt and bacteria using sterile gauze.
6. Windring

windring: a tool made of rubber in the shape of a circle like a car tire, with an inner diameter of
13.5 cm and an outer diameter of 40 cm
Function: as a seat in patients with hemorrhoids or hemorrhoids.

7. Urinal

Function: to collect urine in patients who are not allowed/can go to the toilet.
8. Bedpan

Function: to accommodate feces in patients who are not allowed or able to go to the toilet.
9. Spuit / Syringe

Function: to inject.
10. Injection Needle

Function: to inject combined with a syringe (Spuit = Syringe)

11. Gliserin Syringe / Glyserin Spuit / Spuit Gliserin

 Function: to spray lavement/clysma through the anus, the liquid that is often used is glycerin or
soap solution.
12. Currete

Function: to clean the uterus in patients with abortion / miscarriage.

13. Reflex Hamer

Function: checks the reflex ability of certain parts of our body, for example the knee.
14. Stomach Tube / Maag Slang/ Maag Sonde

Function :
- to collect gastric fluid/sap,
- to rinse/ wash the contents of the stomach,
- for the administration of drugs.
15. Urine Bag

Function: to collect urine which is connected to the Balloon Cathether/Foley Cathether to

remove/retrieve urine in a closed system.

16. Tranfusion Set

Function: for giving blood transfusions.

17. Obstetrical Stethoscope/ Stethoscope monoaural

Function: to hear the baby's heart sound in the womb of a pregnant woman.
18. Ear Speculum

Function: to examine the ear cavity.

19. Colostomy Bag

Function: to accommodate feces in patients after colon surgery (artificial intestinal surgery
through abdominal muscles and skin).
20. Bors Pomp / Breast Pump and relieve

 Function: to help pump milk out of the breasts of women who are breastfeeding.

A. CONCLUTION
Medical devices are instruments, machines, which do not contain drugs, which are used to
prevent, diagnose, cure and alleviate disease, in every health service. Various kinds of medical devices
are made of metal, rubber, liquid materials, glass and cloth. Each of these tools has its own function.
B. SUGGESTION
We hope that this paper that we have created will be useful for all of us, and can provide
information about medical devices and their functions.
