My 100th Review - Dedicated to Ghazals

My list of top twenty filmi Ghazals is as follows :

1. Justujoo Jiski Thi Usko To Na Paaya Humne (Umrao Jaan - 1981) : In my view, one of the best Ghazals
of Asha Ji, penned by Sheheryaar and composed by Khayyam, picturized on Rekha in the title role. It is
an example of highly meaningful and touching poetry. It’s the Ghazal which is the closest to my heart.

2. Ye Na Thi Hamaari Kismet Ki Visaal-E-Yaar Hota (Mirza Ghalib - 1954) : Mirza Ghalib’s immortal
Ghazal, composed by Ghulam Mohammed which has been sung emotionally and performed upon

on Bharat Bhooshan and Suraiya in the movie.

4. Nukta Cheen Hai Gham-E-Dil Usko Sunaaye Na Bane (Mirza Ghalib - 1954) : Another marvel from the
pen of Ghalib, presented to the lovers of Shaayari by Ghulam Mohammed (composition) and Suraiya
(singing and acting).

First of all many congratulations on the 100th Review. With your strike rate, you’’ll soon be
overtaking Sehwag :)) Best wishes for a long innings.

Secondly congratulations on the choice of topic for the 100th review. In an age when nothing
except noise is produced, you have given a new direction to ’’aspiring’’ music lovers and a
’’reason’’ to the confirmed ones.

Have listended to most of the songs you have compiled and loved them all. Most of my
collection though is relegated to songs from the older lyricists like Daag, Momin, Khusro,
Ghalib, Faiz etc rendered by Ghulam Ali and Mehdi Hassan. EMI Pakistan has a great collection
which I once downloaded from the Internet.

My favorite ghazals of all times remain ’’’’Uzr aane mein bhi hai’’’’ (lyrics by Daag) and Dil me
ek lehar si uthi hai abhi. Other favorites which immediately come to mind are Tumhare Khat
Me, Woh Kabhi mil jayen to, Ranjish Hi Sahi, Yeh Jo hai Hukm, Ghazab kiya tere waade pe,
Zehal-e-miskeen, Kaisi chali hai abke hawa, etc..

When you have a ghazal sung by 2 or more accomplished singers (eg., Kal Chaudvin Ki Raat Thi
sung by both Ghulam Ali & Jagjit Singh), just listening to them side by side gives unparalleled
pleasure. Its like sitting in a Mughali mehfil where Shayars are competing with each other and
in the end everyone’’s a winner. Ghazal listening and soaking requires a frame of mind which
has unfortunately eluded me for the past few years...

But your Review evoked nostalgia of heady days... bhai wah maza aa gaya !!

@sydbarett Thanks a ton Nishant. Since the subject of this review of Bollywood Ghazals,
that''s why several gems mentioned by you are not here. I am also fond of non-filmi Ghazals in
their original form and that''s why I have mentioned in the second para the reason for
excluding two classic Ghazals of Ghulam Ali which had been included in the movies but in their
shorter versions. Jitendra

Jitendraji,

First and foremost I would like to congratulate you posting your 100th review. I am sure you
are the fastest to reach this milestone, considering the time since you joined MS.

Ghazals is my favourite music and I feel this is the best form of music as it transports the
listener to a different world.

Your selection is undoubtedly good and some of the titles mentioned above are my favourites
too.

'Mere shauk da nahin aitbaar tenu, aaj vekh mera intezaar aaja' by Ghulam Ali is one of my
favourite Ghazal.

I suggest you listen to MARASIM (Jagjit SIngh/Gulzar), SILSILAY (Jagjit Singh/Javed Akhtar), KOI
BAAT CHALE (Jagjit SIngh/Gulzar) & there are many more, which I’’ll inform you later.

You made my week end.

Regards/Ajeet

@frontasia Kuldeep, Ghazal is a unique type of lyric which does not contain stanzas but Shers.
Anyway, I also like the songs mentioned by you. Please read my 99th review on philosophical
songs too if you please. Jitendra
