SECTION 07 2100

BUILDING INSULATION

PART 1 - GENERAL

Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment and perform all services and
operations necessary for the complete supply and installation of the thermal insulation
as shown on drawings but not limited to:
1. Roofs
2. Under side of slabs
3. Below grade slabs

B. Related Sections: Related work to be coordinated and used in conjunction with this
specification includes but is not restricted to:
1. Section 03 4100 - Precast Structural Concrete.
2. Section 07 3216.13 - Roof Pavers.
3. Section 07 5200 - Modified Bituminous Membrane Roofing.
4. Section 09 5200 - Gypsum Board Suspended Ceiling
5. Section 09 9900 - Vendor List Arch & Str

1.02 REFERENCES

A. All reference to standards, regulations and requirements of statutory bodies shall


mean the latest published editions at the time of contract. Product manufacture, testing
and installation shall comply with the following references unless otherwise stated in
the specification or otherwise approved, but not limited to:
1. ASTM C 168: Standard Terminology Relating to Thermal Insulation.
2. ASTM C 177: Standard Test Methods for Steady State Heat Flux
Measurements and Thermal Transmission Properties.
3. ASTM C 518: Standard Test Method for Steady-State Thermal
Transmission Properties by Mean of the Heat Flow Meter Apparatus.
4. ASTM C 578: Standard Specification for Rigid Cellular Polystyrene
Thermal Insulation.

1.03 PERFORMANCE

A. Comply with the U values as indicated on drawings and as below:


1. Roof: 0.202 W/m2 K
2. Floor: 0.496 W/m2 K
3. Wall : 0.342 W/m2 K

B. Comply with the fire resistance, flammability and insurance rating as per the code and
Authorities requirements

1.04 DEFINITIONS

A. XPS—letter designation for the extruded expanded polystyrene thermal insulation


classified by this specification. It is defined as cellular plastic product manufactured in
a one stage process by extrusion and expansion of the base polymer in the presence
of blowing agent(s) resulting in a product which is rigid with closed cellular structure.

B. Mineral-Fiber Insulation: Insulation composed of rock-wool fibers, slag-wool fibers, or


glass fibers; produced in boards and blanket with latter formed into batts (flat-cut
lengths) or rolls.

1.05 SUBMITTALS:

A. Product data for each type of product indicated. Submit:


1. Complete list of all items proposed to be installed under this Section.
2. Manufacturer's Specifications and other data necessary to demonstrate
compliance with the Specification.

B. Certified test reports showing compliance with performance values (physical


properties) specified.

C. Samples: 300 mm square samples of all kinds of insulation and all fixing accessories.

D. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by a


qualified testing agency for insulation products.

E. Provide evidence that the extruded polystyrene insulation has zero Ozone Depleting
Potential (ODP), is CFC and HCFC free, and has a Global Warming Potential (GWP)
of less than five.

1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Submit documented proof that the material has a proven record of successful
performance for more than 10 years, confirmed by at least five local projects.

B. Installer's Qualifications: The installer with minimum 5 years experience in handling


rigid insulation materials and shall be fully conversant with current manufacturer's
published data.

C. Comply with all requirements of the project and the Local Authorities.

1.07 DELIVERY AND PROTECTION

A. Protect insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration by moisture,
soiling, and other sources. Store inside and in a dry location. Comply with
manufacturer's written instructions for handling, storing, and protecting during
installation.

B. Protect plastic insulation as follows:


1. Do not expose to sunlight, except to extent necessary for period of installation
and concealment.
2. Protect against ignition at all times. Do not deliver plastic insulating materials
to Project site before installation time.
3. Complete installation and concealment of plastic materials as rapidly as
possible in each area of construction.

1.08 WARRANTY

A. A written certification shall be required that insulation meets Thermal Requirements.

B. Warranty shall also state that insulation’s actual thermal resistance will not vary by
more than 10% from the designed R-Value for a period of fifteen (15) years.

C. Submit documented proof that the material has a proven record of successful
performance for more than 10 years, confirmed by at least five local projects.

D. Comply with all requirements of the project and the local Authorities.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 POLYSTYRENE THERMAL INSULATION

A. The insulation shall be a non-absorbent, foam extruded, closed cell polystyrene board
specifically manufactured for use in roofing insulation. Comply with ASTM C578 (type
VII) and shall meet all requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Edges of boards shall be rebated (Shiplap).

C. Physical properties:
1. Thermal conductivity : 0.016 W/m.K (DIN 52612)
– 5 years aged value 0.032 W/m.K (ASTM C177)
2. Water Absorption : <1% by volume to ASTM D2842
3. Capillarity : Nil
4. Density : 32-35 kg/m3.

5. Compressive strength : 220 – 360 KPA to DIN 53421 or 42 – 65 PSI
to ASTM D-1621
6. Fire : Class B1 DIN 4102
7. Thicknesses : 50mm for walls and 75mm for roof unless
otherwise indicated on drawings
8. Flame Spread/Smoke Developed Values (ASTM E84): 5/165.

D. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) insulation board in compliance with ASTM C578


“Standard Specification for Rigid, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation” (type IX)

2.02 INSULATION UNDER SIDE (SOFFIT) OF SLABS

A. Foil-Faced, Mineral Wool Board Insulation: ASTM C 612;Type1A, faced on 1 side with
foil-scrim or foil-scrim-polyethylene vapor retarder; with maximum flame-spread and
smoke-developed indexes of 25 and 5, respectively; and of the following nominal
density and thermal resistivity:
1. Mineral wool semi-rigid board insulation with thermal resistance value of not
less than RSI=0.704 per 25 mm thickness at a mean temperature of 24C and
a nominal density of 64 kg/m3.
2. Faced with a vapor retarder having a perm rating of not more than 1.0.

B. Refer to Section 09 5200 for suspended ceiling

2.03 RIGID BOARD INSULATION BELOW GRADE SLABS:

A. PolyisocyanurateThermoset Insulation (PIR)

B. Material: Fibre free rigid thermoset Polyisocyanurate insulant (Density: 32 Kg/m3)


manufactured to BS 13165, faced on both sides with low emissivity composite foil,
autohesively bonded to the insulation core during manufacture.

C. Manufacturer: Refer to Section 09 9900 - Vendor List Arch & Str.

D. Thickness: 60 mm at an aged conductivity of 0.022 W/m.K

E. Compressive strength of the insulation board shall typically exceed 140 kPa at 10%
compression, when tested to BS / I.S. EN 826: 1996

F. Water Vapour Resistance : > 100 MN-s/g

G. Insulation board shall be manufactured with a CFC/HCFC-free blowing agent that has
zero Ozone Depletion potential and low Global Warming Potential.

H. Installation requirements: refer to manufacturers guidance.


1. Joints: Closely butted, no gaps.

I. Other requirements:
1. Coordinate all trades affected or affecting this section to assure steady progress
of all work.
2. The insulation boards shall be provided with a square edge.
3. The insulation material shall be compatible with the waterproofing membrane.

4. Ensure that the waterproofing system has been tested and certified prior to
proceeding with these works.

2.04 ADHESIVE

A. As recommended by insulation manufacturer for specific application with


demonstrated capacity to bond insulation securely to substrate indicated without
damaging insulation and substrates.

2.05 ACCESSORIES

A. Fasteners and accessories required for the installation shall be as recommended by


the manufacturer.

B. Mechanical Fasteners: Corrosion-resistant fasteners consisting of thermal cap,


standard washer and shaft attachments, and fastener of the following description:
1. For attachment to masonry and concrete substrates, provide sheathing dowel
in form of a plastic wing-tipped fastener with thermal cap, sized to fit insulation
thickness indicated and to penetrate substrate to depth required to secure
anchorage.

C. Available Manufacturers:

2. MKT, Germany
3. Fisher, Germany
4. Ancon, UK
5. Or Approved Equal.

D. Anchor Adhesive: Product with demonstrated capability to bond insulation anchors


securely to substrates indicated without damaging insulation, fasteners, and
substrates.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Ensure that surfaces to receive insulation are clean, dry, and suitable to provide a
complete and satisfactory installation.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Clean substrates of substances harmful to insulation or vapor retarders, including


removing projections capable of puncturing vapor retarders or of interfering with
insulation attachment.

3.03 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Comply with insulation manufacturer's written instructions applicable to products and


application indicated.

B. Install insulation that is undamaged, dry, and unsoiled and that has not been left
exposed at any time to rain,

C. Extend insulation in thickness indicated to envelop entire area to be insulated. Cut


and fit tightly around obstructions and fill voids with insulation. Remove projections
that interfere with placement.

D. For preformed insulating units, provide sizes to fit applications indicated and selected
from manufacturer's standard thicknesses, widths, and lengths. Apply single layer of
insulation units to produce thickness indicated unless multiple layers are otherwise
shown or required to make up total thickness.

E. Install rigid insulating units with joints close and flush, in regular courses and with cross
joints broken.

3.04 INSTALLATION OF INSULATION

A. General: Apply insulation units to substrates, complying with manufacturer’s written


instructions. Bond units to substrate with adhesive or use mechanical anchorage to
provide permanent placement and support of units.

B. Extruded polystyrene Insulation Boards (Roofs):


1. Install board insulation on roofing membrane as follows:
a. Install in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
b. Cut clearly to fit closely around projections, upstands, rainwater outlets
etc.
c. Seal joints between insulation units by applying adhesive, mastic, or
sealant to edges of each unit to form a tight seal as units are shoved into
place. Fill voids in completed installation with adhesive, mastic, or
sealant as recommended by insulation manufacturer.
d. Protect from damage after installation.

C. Mineral Fiber Insulation Boards to under-side of slab:


1. Ensure that surfaces to receive insulation are dry and free of matter detrimental
to installation of uniform layer of insulation.
2. Adhere to concrete substrates at 300 mm o.c. both ways; 2 fasteners minimum
for each full board width of 610 mm and 4 fasteners for each full board length
1220 mm to ensure firm and continuous contact with substrates and adjacent
insulation boards
3. Install insulation without gaps or voids in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions.
4. Trim insulation neatly to fit spaces. Use insulation free of damage.
5. Place insulation in cavities formed by framing members to produce a friction fit
between edges of insulation and adjoining framing members.
6. Fit insulation tight in spaces and leave no gaps or voids.
7. Soffit Board joints to be staggered or squared and taped with a 75mm wide
aluminium foil tape.

3.05 ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL AND PROTECTION

1. Protect all insulation from unnecessary construction traffic after installation.
Protection shall be approved and shall prevent any damage likely to result in a
decrease in the efficiency of the insulation.
2. Protect from long periods of exposure before being concealed, by proper
sequencing of the work.
