Safety System Design Philosophy

1) It should be Fail-Safe
2) Difficult to over-ride the system
3) Sensors reacting directly as possible
4) Attains the safe condition when part of it fails
5) Be rugged
6) Survive as long as possible
7) Simple

Operating Principle of an Actuator
Opens when the force from the hydraulic or pneumatic pressure
overcomes the
• Stem Thrust,
• Spring force,
• Friction over Gate and Seat
• Friction other seals

By design Stem Thrust assist closing the GV

Springs ensure
• Closing with zero GV cavity pressure
• Energize M2M Back Seat

Development of Actuator from 1960’s

• Since 1960’s PN actuators

• Pneumatic power also used for the production controls at well site

• Pneumatic actuators lower in cost

• HY actuators were more costly

• HY actuators need extra hydraulic power system

Development of Actuator from 1960’s

< 1960’s Sub-Surface Safety Valves (SSSV) direct control design.

> 1960’s Surface Controlled

Sub-Surface Safety Valves
(SCSSSV) become mandatory

SCSSSV
• Due to SCSSSV hydraulic power became readily available
• Increase of bigger size Xtree GV’s with high pressure
• Hydraulic actuators better technical solution.

PN versus HY: Installation Factors
Ø PN > Ø HY
Compact Xtree

Little space for

actuators

• Actuators are ratio design.

• Low PN pressure => need big Ø cylinder.
• To little space for big Ø cylinders in between wells
• To little space for big Ø cylinders Manual GV

PN versus HY: Climatic Factors

Condens in air can freeze up

• PN systems have problems with

control medium freezing
• HY systems less susceptible
for freezing problems
• HY seals are lubricated by the oil

Pneumatic Closing Times
The Closing time of the pneumatic actuator
can be improved by:
• Adding a quick exhaust to the actuator
• Adding more than one quick exhaust Inlet / Outlet
• Increasing the size of the outlet port
on the actuator. E.g. ¾” outlets
instead of two ½” so larger quick
exhaust can be used.

Hydraulic Closing Times
Closure time HY is between 3 and 15 seconds Influencing factors:
• Size and stroke actuator (displaced oil volume)
• Yes/No single HY line for control and return
• Yes/No separate return HY line from the actuator to collector tank
Hydraulic • Ø of HY return line
=
Friction • Length of return line
• Number of bends
• Oil viscosity
• Use of Quick Exhaust
