ENGINEERING MECHANICS (KME-402)
B.TECH. FOURTH SEMESTER
FIRST SESSIONAL EXAMINATION, EVEN SEMESTER, (2019-2020)
BRANCH: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Time –1hr. 30 min Maximum Marks – 30

SECTION – A
1. Attempt all questions in brief. (5*1 = 5)
Q.N. QUESTION Marks CO BL
What is equilibrant?
a. Solution: An equilibrant force is a force which brings a body into mechanical equilibrium. [1]
According to Newton's second law, a body 1 1 1
has zero acceleration when the vector sum of all the forces acting upon it is zero. Therefore, an equilibrant force is equal in magnitude and
opposite in direction to the resultant of all the other forces acting on a body.
Write any two laws of solid friction.
Solution: 1. The force of friction acts in opposite direction in which the surface is having tendency to move.
2. The force of friction is equal to force applied to surfaces, so long as surface is at rest.
b. 3. When surface is on point of motion, force of friction is highest and this maximum frictional force is called as limiting friction force. 1 1 1
4. The limiting frictional force bears constant ratio to the normal reaction between the two surfaces.
5. The limiting frictional force does not depend upon shape and areas of surfaces in contact.
6. The ratio between the limiting friction and normal reaction is a bit less when the two surfaces are in motion.
7. The force of friction is independent of velocity of sliding.
What is perfect truss?
Solution: The truss which has got just sufficient number of members to resist the loads without
c. 1 2 1
underlying appreciable deformation in shape is called a perfect truss. A perfect truss must follow
the condition, m=2j-3.
Write the relations between load intensity, shear force and bending moment.
d. 𝒅𝑴 𝒅𝑺 𝒅𝟐 𝑴 1 2 1
Solution: 𝑺 = ;𝒘 = =
𝒅𝒙 𝒅𝒙 𝒅𝒙𝟐
Define Centroid.
e. Solution: Centroid is the point in a plane section such that for any axis through that point moment 1 3 1
of area is zero.

2. Attempt any two parts of the following. (2*5 = 10)
Q.N. QUESTION Marks CO BL
a. Three bars, hinged at A and D and pinned at B and C as shown in Figure form a four-linked 5 1 2
mechanism. Determine the value of P that will prevent movement of bars.

Solution: First applying lami’s theorem at point-B and find TAB and TBC, then applying lami’s
theorem at point-C. Hence value of P is found 3047.2 N.

b. Find the support reactions in the beam shown in the Figure. 5 1 3

Solution: First analyze the FBD of crane CDE, and find RC=1.5 kN & RD=4.5 kN. Then consider
FBD of beam AB and find RA=3kN & RB=3 kN.
c. Find the forces in all the members of the given truss by the method of joints. 5 2 3

Solution:
 Analyse the equilibrium of forces at point G and find FFG=193.18 kN(Compression)
and FEG=193.18 kN(Tension)
 Then consider joint-E, FEC=FEG=193.18 kN(Tension) & FEF=0
 Then consider joint-F, FFG=FFD =193.18 kN(Compression) & FFC=0
 Then consider joint-C, FCA=FCE =193.18 kN(Tension) & FCD=0
 Then consider joint-D, FDF=FDB =193.18 kN(Compression) & FAD=0
d. Draw the SFD and BMD of the given figure. 5 2 3

3. Attempt any one part of the following : (1*5 = 5)
Q.N. QUESTION Marks CO BL
State and Prove varignon’s theorem of moment.
Solution:

a. 5 1 3
b. Find the minimum value of a horizontal force P applied to the lower block that will hold the 5 1 4
system of blocks as shown in Figure in equilibrium. The coefficients of friction are as follows:
0.25 at the floor, 0.30 at the wall, and 0.20 between blocks.

Solution:

First consider the FBD of upper block and find the rection forces of upper body with lower
body and side wall, then find the value of P by considering the FBD of lower body.

4. Attempt any one part of the following : (1*5 = 5)

Q.N. QUESTION Marks CO BL
a. Draw the SFD and BMD of the given figure. 5 2 6
