23) A load P is applied to the simple steel hook having a rectangular cross section, as
illustrated in figure 6.23. Calculate the tangential stresses at points A and B.
Given: P = 6 KN, b = 25 mm, r̅ = 50 mm and h = 32 mm.

Solution:

Given,

Radius of centroidal axis ( r̅ ) = 50 mm,

h = 32 mm, P = 6 KN = 6000 N

For the given curved steel hook, a = 34 mm, b = 25mm, c = 66mm

A = b (c - a) = 25 * (66 - 34) = 800 mm2 = 0.0008 m2

A 0.0008
Radius of neutral axis (R) = r dA = 66 dr ∗ 0.025 = 0.04824 m = 48.24 mm
∫r 2 r ∫34 ( r
)
1

e = r̅ − R = 50 − 48.24 = 1.74 mm

Moment (M) = P * r̅ = 6000 ∗ 0.05 = 300 Nm

𝑃 𝑀(R−r) 6000 300(0.04824 −0.034)

𝑃 𝑀(R−r) 6000 300(0.066−0.04824)
