The Uni July 2023 To Whom It May Concern We are providing this letter to all graduates of The University of Manchester who have completed an award during the academic year 2022-23 for them to share, if they wish, with prospective employers or institutions where they may be seeking to undertake further study or research. During the 2022-23 academic year, some members of the University and College Union (UCU) at 145 universities have taken part in a national Marking and Assessment Boycott (MAB) in relation to an ongoing, national dispute about pay and working conditions. The situation is deeply regrettable, and we continue to seek to resolve the dispute. As matters stand, we anticipate that a small percentage of our students will not have a full set of marks by the scheduled date. The University of Manchester has taken significant action to mitigate the impact of the Industrial action, and our aim is to provide reassurance as to the academic integrity of all our awards at the University. We can reassure you that our planning and provision have reflected that same core commitment to excellence. We have maintained the integrity of our regulations and the requirements of relevant accrediting partners. Whilst in some cases, our approach to marking and assessment may have changed our students have continued to engage with learning, to be assessed, and to demonstrate their capabilities and potential throughout, and they have risen wonderfully to these challenges. While we have put in place a few changes to procedures to ensure that our students have not been unduly disadvantaged by the Industrial action, we are confident that the integrity of our regulations and additional scrutiny of our assessment processes and boards of examiners, which have continued to operate with their usual rigour and discernment. They have, as usual, benefited from the insights and contributions of external examiners from other universities, and we have worked throughout in a way that respects the needs and requirements of employers, regulators, and accrediting bodies ‘small number of our students will not yet have enough marks available to achieve their degree award. In the meantime, our students can access a digital transcript of any marks available to them at this time to share with prospective employers or other universities. Some of our international students will now need to wait for their degree award before they can apply for a Graduate Visa to work in the UK. We have been reassured by the Home Office, however, that they will be able to apply to extend their Student route/Tier 4 student visas until they receive their award. The regulations enable students/graduates to work temporarily ona Student Route/Tier 4 visa, including on a full-time basis after their course is complete. You can be assured that we are confident that the University of Manchester awards in 2022- 23 aren all respects equivalent in quality and standards to those achieved in any other year, Indeed, those completing their awards and graduating this year have demonstrated remarkable tenacity, resilience and enterprise in adapting their ways of working and in achieving their qualifications in exceptional and adverse circumstances. We are justifiably very proud of them, and we commend them to you. Yours faithfully, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell Professor April McMahon President and Vice-Chancellor Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students Crrecyle it if
