TYPES OF EDITORIALS:
1. Explain or interpret: School newspapers may explain new school rules
or a particular student-body effort like a food drive.

2. Criticize: These editorials constructively criticize actions, decisions or


situations while providing solutions to the problem identified.
Immediate purpose is to get readers to see the problem, not the
solution.

3. Persuade: Editorials of persuasion aim to immediately see the solution,


not the problem. From the first paragraph, readers will be encouraged
to take a specific, positive action.

4. Praise: These editorials commend people and organizations for


something done well.

Commitments
During his campaign for the presidency, Rodrigo Duterte had indicated what he thought of national
commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Developing nations, he said, are suffering the brunt of
global warming, which was caused in large part by a long period of unregulated carbon emissions by affluent
nations as they industrialized.
With their economies now sufficiently advanced, why should the industrialized states demand that lower-
income countries leapfrog from carbon-burning fossil fuels to clean energy at the expense of development
needs?
In line with this, Duterte said deals for the construction of coal-fired power plants approved by the previous
administration would push through, as he stressed that coal remains a most affordable fuel for the nation’s
needs. At the same time, he raised international concern after announcing that he did not intend to honor the
country’s commitment to abide by the climate change deal approved by the Philippines and 194 other states
in Paris last December.
Under the Paris deal, the 195 states agreed to keep global temperatures at just 1.5 degrees Celsius above
pre-industrial levels, and to limit global warming to below 2 degrees. Duterte has said that without financial
and technological support from rich nations, working to achieve the climate change goals would limit
economic growth in developing countries such as the Philippines.
His position makes sense for someone whose focus is on achieving sustained economic growth to reduce
poverty. Climate change, however, also threatens economic growth and therefore efforts to fight poverty, with
the poor the most vulnerable to natural catastrophes due to global warming.
Duterte will have to balance his position on the role of advanced economies and the need for the Philippines
to do its part in dealing with climate change. After all, he has also said he intends to honor the international
treaties and commitments made by his predecessor. This isn’t all about coal, if he feels so strongly about the
issue. There are many ways by which developing nations can reduce their carbon footprint, with minimal
impact on economic development efforts.
Ripples of Change
One group is being honored for assisting survivors of human trafficking. Another group is being recognized
for its success in fighting deep-seated corruption. Three individuals, meanwhile, are being honored for
promoting health care for all, women’s rights, and civil society empowerment.

They are this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Awardees – each with an inspiring story of dedicated work and
determination to overcome odds in bringing positive change in their societies. Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel
Prize, named after a Philippine president who is remembered for his exemplary service to his nation,
continues to provide stories that should inspire those who are battling scourges such as armed conflict,
discrimination, poverty, abuse and corruption.

Among those who will be honored today is Philippine physician Ernesto Domingo, advocate of universal
healthcare and neonatal hepatitis vaccination. There is Afghanistan’s lone female provincial governor, Habiba
Sarabi, who is doing her part in promoting women’s welfare and the peaceful development of her strife-torn
country. Lahpai Seng Raw of Myanmar is promoting peaceful public participation in rebuilding her nation
through local non-government organizations.

Then there’s Nepal’s Shakti Samuha “Power Group,” whose members are all survivors of human trafficking.
Instead of succumbing to despair, the women rose above their suffering, setting up emergency shelters and
halfway homes for other victims of human trafficking.
Ripples of Change
Last but not least, there’s the Corruption Eradication Commission of Indonesia, or Komisi Pemberantasan
Korupsi, whose work and achievements in fighting corruption in that country since its creation in 2002 should
be a source of envy for Filipinos.

In honoring the awardees, the Magsaysay Foundation noted that they shared a common trait: “a greatness of
spirit that infuses their leadership for change… they all refuse to give up, despite daunting adversity and
opposition.”

Filipinos, looking for heroism in everyday life, can find inspiration in the tribute to the Magsaysay awardees:
“Working selflessly in unpretentious yet powerful ways, they are showing us how commitment, competence
and collaborative leadership can truly create ripples of change, even from the bottom of the pyramid.”
Bastusan na
Ipinakita ng China ang kabastusan nang itaboy ng kanilang Coast Guard ang mga Pilipinong mangingisda
para huwag makalapit sa Scarborough o Panatag Shoal noong Huwebes. Dalawang rubber boat ng China
Coast Guard ang mabilis na nakalapit sa bangkang pangisda at tinaboy sila. May hawak na megaphone at
camera ang mga miyembro ng Cosat Guard. Pilit silang pinaalis sa lugar. Nasa likuran ng mga rubber boat
ang isang malaking barko ng CCG at handang gumawa ng hakbang kung magpipilit ang mga
mangingisdang Pinoy na lumapit sa Panatag.

Sinakop ng China ang Panatag noong 2012 at nagtayo ng istruktura roon makaraan ang ilang buwang
pakikipaggirian sa Philippine Navy at Philippine Coast Guard. Noong 2013, nagpamalas pa ng grabeng
pambu-bully ang China nang bombahin ng tubig ang mga mangingisdang Pinoy. Walang nagawa ang mga
mangingisdang Pinoy kundi ang lumayo sa lugar na pinagkukunan nila ng ikinabubuhay. Ayon sa mga
mangingisda, sa sobrang lakas ng tubig na ibinuga mula sa barko ng CCG, halos matuklap ang kanilang
balat. Ayon pa sa mga mangingisda, hindi nila malilimutan ang karanasang iyon na akala nila ay katapusan
na nila.

Hindi pa roon natapos ang pambu-bully ng China sapagkat nakaranas din ang mga kagawad ng Philippine
Coast Guard nang pakikipaghabulan sa CCG nang magdala sila ng supply sa mga Pilipinong sundalo na
naka-station sa isang lumang barko sa lugar. Kasama ng PCG ang mga kagawad ng media.
Bastusan na
Ang mga pangayayaring iyon ang naging dahilan para magsampa ng reklamo ang Pilipinas laban sa Beijing
sa Permanent Court of Arbitration sa The Hague. Noong Martes, inilabas ng UN ang ruling na nagsasabing
walang legal bases ang pag-angkin ng China sa Scarborough. Ganunman, sabi ng China, hindi sila susunod
sa ruling.

Bastusan na ang nangyari at balewala ang pagbasura ng tribunal sa claim ng China.

Kailangang humingi na ng suporta ang Pilipinas sa maraming bansa para ma-pressure ang China at sundin
ang ruling. Hindi kaya ng Pilipinas na makipagbakbakan sa China. Walang kalaban-laban kaya kailangan
ang tulong ng mga kaibigang bansa. Patuloy na babastusin ng China ang Pilipinas at masakit ito sa bawat
Pilipino.
