REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES

Several bogie beams have been found corroded and cracked under the bogie stop pad, during
maintenance and inspection. This could initiate stress corrosion of the bogie beam.

An Inspection Operators Information Telex (OIT) (SE 999.118/06/LB) was issued in October 2006 to
inform operators of the cracked bogie beams. This recommended that every operator who experienced
bogie beam stop-pad failures should complete an inspection of the affected bogie beam at the time of
bogie beam stop-pad replacement. During these inspections a Main Landing Gear (MLG) was visually
inspected and the bogie beam stop-pad was found to be deformed and cracked. Upon removal of the
stop-pad for replacement, the bogie beam was also found to be cracked.

Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) A340-32-4264 was issued as a one off inspection for cracks in this
area.

This Service Bulletin is only valid for MSNs that have not accomplished Service Bulletin No.
A340-32-4300.

This ISB supersedes ISB A340-32-4264 and introduces repeat inspections.

This ISB is issued to advise all operators of A340 aircraft of the issue of the following Messier-Dowty
Service Bulletins:

- A33/34-32-295 for basic landing gear aircraft (Config. 001)

- A33/34-32-296 for growth landing gear aircraft (Config. 002)

- A33/34-32-297 for enhanced landing gear aircraft (Config. 003).

@A340
SERVICE BULLETIN
SUMMARY

This ISB details instructions for repeat inspections of the bogie beam in the area of the stop pad, to
check for:

- the integrity of the corrosion protection scheme under the bogie stop pad

- corrosion

- presence of protection on the base metal

- subsequent cracking of the bogie beam under the stop pad.

This involves removal of the stop pad to inspect the surface treatments and repair as necessary. These
repeat inspections under all stop pads are required as a precautionary fleet-wide action.

The accomplishment of Service Bulletin No. A340-32-4300 is considered a terminating action for the
repetitive inspection requirements of this Service Bulletin.

Accomplishment of this ISB will give an early detection of bogie beam corrosion/cracking in the area of
the stop pad.

The Operational/Maintenance Consequences of this Service Bulletin are covered by the update of the
affected publications detailed in ’PLANNING INFORMATION’.

C. REASON

(1) History

Several bogie beams have been found corroded and cracked under the bogie stop pad,
during maintenance and inspection. This could initiate stress corrosion of the bogie
beam.

An Inspection Operators Information Telex (OIT) (SE 999.118/06/LB) was issued in

October 2006 to inform operators of the cracked bogie beams. This recommended
that every operator who experienced bogie beam stop-pad failures should complete an
inspection of the affected bogie beam at the time of bogie beam stop-pad replacement.
During these inspections a Main Landing Gear (MLG) was visually inspected and the
bogie beam stop-pad was found to be deformed and cracked. Upon removal of the stop-
pad for replacement, the bogie beam was also found to be cracked.

Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) A340-32-4264 was issued as a one off inspection for
cracks in this area.

This Service Bulletin is only valid for MSNs that have not accomplished Service Bulletin
No. A340-32-4300.

This ISB supersedes ISB A340-32-4264 and introduces repeat inspections.

(2) Objective/Action

This ISB is issued to advise all operators of A340 aircraft of the issue of the following
Messier-Dowty Service Bulletins:

SERVICE BULLETIN

This ISB details instructions for repeat inspections of the bogie beam in the area of the
stop pad, to check for:

- the integrity of the corrosion protection scheme under the bogie stop pad

- corrosion

- presence of protection on the base metal

- subsequent cracking of the bogie beam under the stop pad.

This involves removal of the stop pad to inspect the surface treatments and repair as
necessary. These repeat inspections under all stop pads are required as a precautionary
fleet-wide action.

The accomplishment of Service Bulletin No. A340-32-4300 is considered a terminating

action for the repetitive inspection requirements of this Service Bulletin.

(3) Advantages

Accomplishment of this ISB will give an early detection of bogie beam corrosion/cracking
in the area of the stop pad.

(4) Operational/Maintenance Consequences

The Operational/Maintenance Consequences of this Service Bulletin are covered by the

update of the affected publications detailed in ’PLANNING INFORMATION’.
