Summer Examination 2020

Course Title: Introduction to Probability Distribution Course code: STAT-

1201

Attempt any three questions:

(a) Assume that the probability of a defective computer component is 0.02.

Components are randomly selected. Find the probability that the first defect is
caused by the seventh component tested. How many components do you
expect to test until one is found to be defective? 20

Q1:
(b) Write down the properties and real life examples of negative binomial
distribution

(a) Write down the properties and real life example of Poisson distribution?

(b) According to a survey a university professor gets, on average, 7 emails per

day. Let X = the number of emails a professor receives per day. The discrete
Q2: random variable X takes on the values x = 0, 1, 2 …. The random variable X 20
has a Poisson distribution: X ~ P(7). The mean is 7 emails. write

i. What is the probability that an email user receives exactly 2 emails per day?

ii. What is the probability that an email user receives at most 2 emails per day?

a) In an industrial process, the diameter of a ball bearing is an important

measurement. The buyer sets specifications for the diameter to be 3.0 ± 0.01
cm. The implication is that no part falling outside these specifications will be
accepted. It is known that in the process the diameter of a ball bearing has a
normal distribution with mean μ = 3.0 and standard deviation σ = 0.005. On
average, how many manufactured ball bearings will be scrapped?

20
b) An athlete finds that in a high jump he can clear a height of 1068m once in a
Q3: four attempts and a height of 1.52m eight times out of ten attempts. Assuming
the heights he can clear in various jumps from a normal distribution, estimate
the mean and standard deviation of distribution.

a) A shipment of 7 televisions sets contains 2 defective. Aslam at random

purchases 3 of the sets. If x is the number of defective sets purchased by
Aslam. Find the mean.

b) On the past experience, 5% of the total items are defectives. If we sample 100
Q4: items, what is the probability that they are
(i) 2 defective items 20
(ii) At least two defective items
(iii) No defective item
