Narrative Report:
DepEd, through the Bureau of Learner
Support Services-School Health Division
(BLSS-SHD), in partnership with the
Department of Health (DOH), World
Health
Organization (WHO), and United Nations
Children's Fund (UNICEF), organized this
year's celebration of the Global Handwashing
Day with the theme, Our Future is at
Hand—Let's Move Forward Together. This
global advocacy day is celebrated every 15th
of October and is dedicated to
increasing awareness and understanding
on the
importance of handwashing with soap as an
effective and affordable way to prevent
diseases and save lives.
In line with the said celebration, a one-day
symposium titled Malinis na Kamay
para sa Kinabukasan ng Bayan was conducted
last October 15, 2021, Friday, at 1:00-
3:30 pm via DepEd Philippines Facebook
Page and Zoom.
This activity aimed to motivate key
stakeholders to promote a culture of hand
hygiene by featuring best practices on
encouraging handwashing behavior across
different settings. To adapt to current learning
modalities, the event featured selected
videos submitted by the regions. These
highlighted various initiatives in the
implementation of WinS Program at the
school level. Furthermore, this event launched
the WASH O'clock campaign as a platform
for public awareness, advocacy, and social
mobilization in selected areas.
To formally open the symposium, Secretary
Francisco Duque Ill of Department
of Health (DOH) gave his opening remarks.
Undersecretary Alain Del B. Pascua of
Department of Education (DepEd) also gave
an inspiring message to the participants.
Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe of WHO
Representative to the Philippines told more
about
COVID-19 Variants of Concern and
why handwashing is one of the public
health
measures to reduce transmission in schools,
workplaces, and communities followed by
featuring the best practices and videos in
promoting handwashing in schools of selected
schools in the Department of Education.
Also, teaching force and students San
Agustin Integrated School (High School)
showed their support by joining the
symposium and by posting in the school FB
page
their pictures and tiktok videos doing the
proper handwashing. Global Handwashing
Day served as a yearly reminder that
handwashing with soap and water is one of
the
best steps we can do to avoid getting sick and
spreading germs to others.
