Introduction

1 Introduction
The GIS manager provides the ability to work with GIS maps. It offers a number of
visualization options as well as tools for vector and raster (spatial) processing.

1.1 Learning Outcomes

In this part of the exercise you will work with the GIS explorer in the Explorer window. In
particular you will be able to do the following:
• Add vector data to the database
• Create maps and save as favorite
• View the data in a map and table
• Learn how to change layer properties and save it for further use
• Edit vector layer attribute tables

Adding vector files to specific group

2 Adding vector files to specific group

In this exercise you will first create a group called “shapes” and import the following
shape files:
• DischargeLocations
• RainfallStations
• NAPA_Branches
• NAPA_Catchments
• YRforecastSt
Instructions Screen

Open the GIS Manager

Explorer. Right-click on the
database node and click on
‘Add new group’

A new group is created with a

name “New group …”

Rename the group by right

clicking on the “New group ”
and select “Rename”.

Give it the name “Shapes” … or

another meaningful name of
your choice.

Select the group you just

created in the explorer. This will
prompt all tools that can be
applied to the group in the Tools
Explorer.
Select the ‘Import from
Shapefile’ tool and its
properties will be displayed in
the property window.

Instructions Screen

Import the files one by one, by

browsing to the ‘File Path’ in the
property explorer.

Run the tool by clicking on Run

tool icon.

The file and its properties will be

displayed in the Data View.
Click “Execute …“

The data will be loaded in the

database in the group Shapes.

Repeat for the other vector

layers.

3 Adding vector files to map view

The data you have loaded in the database can be visualised by adding it to a map.

In this exercise you will add the layers you have loaded to the database to a map.

Instructions Screen

Add the layer to the map by

doubling clicking or by right
clicking and selecting “Add to
new map….”

Other layers can be added to

the active map by double
clicking on the layer or by right
clicking and selecting “Add to
active map….”

Depending on the order you

have added the files to the
active map, some shapes may
not be visible. In order to
visualise the layer, right click on
the layer in the data view
window and select Move up.

The GIS manager is very

intuitive … explore by adding or
removing layers.

3.1 Changing layer properties in maps

In this exercise, you will change the layer properties to suit your preference.

Instructions Screen

You can change the layer

properties by clicking on the
layer in the data view window
and by editing its properties in
the tools explorer window on the
right.

Select the NAPA_Catchments

layer in the legend in the data
view window, and change the
Appearance … to transparent
in the Properties window.

In order to save the settings for

a specific layer for the next time,
right click on the layer, and
select Save symbology/
Workspace default …

Repeat for the other layers.

Repeat for the other layers.

Other properties such

attribute names can also be
set, so that their values are
displayed on the map.

Layers can also be edited in

data view.
To start editing the active
layer, select the option of
‘Edit active layer …’

This prompts a toolbar with

the different editing tools
available. Note: if you want
to save the edits, use the
tool from the toolbar.

3.2 Adding background map

Instructions Screen

To change the map

background, the coordinate
system must be set to
WGS84/Pseudo Mercator

Click on the database node in

the GIS manager and change
the Coordinate system in the
Properties window.

Close the workbench for the

change to take effect.

To change the map

background, left click once
somewhere on the map in the
data view. The map properties
will now be visible on the right
pane and you can select terrain
as a background or something
else.

3.3 Saving maps to favorite

In this exercise you will add the map to the “Favorite Manager” which can be used later
for generating reports.

Instructions Screen
Add a map to Favorite by right
clicking on the map and select
“Add to favorite” the data view
toolstrip.

All layout settings are stored

with a favorite. This implies that
if there are changes to the layer
after creating the favorite, the
changes will be reflected when
the favorite is opened.

Go to the favorite manager and

give the map a meaningful
name.

4 Editing an attribute table

In this exercise, you will edit and save the attribute table of the vector layer
NAPA_Catchments by adding the catchment areas.

Instructions Screen

Select the vector layer

NAPA_Catchments in the GIS
Manager Explorer, right-click
and select ‘Add to data table…’

The table will open in the data

view. You will notice that the
area for all the catchments are
set to 0.

Copy the catchment areas from

the excel file
NapaCatchmentAreas.xlsx
provided.

Select the cells where they

should be pasted in the attribute
table and use the paste option
to paste in the values or Ctrl+V.

To save the edits, use the save

button.
