NEUTRALISING I MINERALISING FILTERS

FOR OOMESTIC WATER TREATMENT

It is undesirable to have domestic water, produced by Desalination Plants such as evaporators and
reverse osmosis water makers, with a low pH value (Acid Condition) due to its corrosive and harmful
effects.

The water should therefore be treated to make it neutral or slightly alkaline. This acid condition is due to
the presence of free carbonic acid gas (C0 2) and to ensure its complete removal the water should be
filtered through a bed of neutralising filter media, named E.W.T. Compound, where the C0 2 combines
with the filtering material to form natural bicarbonates.

When distilled water is used for domestic purpose E.W.T. Compound adds a natural taste to the water
which is otherwise insipid to the palate. In the past it has been common practice to use marble for this
purpose though the reaction is slow and difficulty is experienced in obtaining equilibrium.

E. W. T. Compound is now preferred as its action is rapid and complete having a special structure which
mal<es them rapid and uniformly soluble. The consumption is approximately 112 kg (1 Ib) of material per
35.000 lit res. of water to be treated. It is sufficient to effect partial reloading 2 · 4 times a year only, to
compensate for the quantity which disappears by dissolving in the water.

E.W.T. Compound is supplied in granules packed in 25 kg. It is advisable to occasionally reverse the flow
of water through the unit to loosen the medium and to flush after every refill until the water is clear
agam.

A Neutralising-filter will improve taste and quality of the water. It will avoid corrosion (rust and oxydized
particles) in the fresh water system.

NEUTRALIZING/MINERALIZING Fll TER

Directions for use

Installation of the filter-unit

The filter is delivered without external piping and valves (optional). We do advise to install the piping and
valves according to these instructions. The filter must be correctly ·rnstalled and properly operated. Special
attention must be given to proper bacl<-flushing facility of the filter at the specified periodic intervals and
after (re-}filling the filter. The interface water connections are stated on the Dimensional Drawing, doc. name
HDN-05 HP.DD1

The filter should be installed in the pipeline from the water maker (evaporator or reverse osmosis desalinator
type} to the feed water storage tanl<(s}.
Use of pipe size diameter is depending on the actual flow capacity design.

1. Install the filter at a suitable place with adequate space for operating and servicing the unit. Start fitting
piping and valves according to the instructions and piping and valves diagram.
2. Connect wash water outlet and drain to discharge system
0 ~
3. One of the two water connections at the top,of the shell can be used for installation of a Pressure
0 ~
~~
~ ~ Relief/Safety Valve (PSV} and Air Vent valve. Both top connections are suitable for this application
~~
~~
""'"":" depending which water inlet connection is preffered depending on best installation position
4. Connect filtered water outlet to the f.w. storage tank(s}
5. Connect water inlet from water maker (product water} between valves B and C and mal<e a connection
from hydrophore unit (or if not available as an alternative for watermal<er} required as wash-water facility.
(Note: A pressure relieve valve must be inserted if pressure in not controlled effectively, set at maximum
operating pressure of the filter vessel}. A check valve (one way valve} has to be installed in the product
water outlet from watermaker to the Neutralizing/Mineralizing filter to avoid water from the hydrophore
pressure side to be pumped to the watermaker.
5. Secure/fasten vessel to protect against ship movements. Special facilities are available on top of the filter
shell.
6. No welding on filter body (shell} allowed to protect coating

filter filling instructions

Start using filling the bottom layer being the Filter bed gravel 3-5 mm. and spread it equally over the bottom
to cover all filter nozzles. Beware not to damage the filter nozzles. After this has been done start with the
E.W.T. Compound and f"rll the vessel according to the specified quantity Equally divide the medium over the
surface of the filter. Close the filling port (hand holes} and check for leaks after putting the water pressure
on. Always start with the flushing procedure after each (re-}fill, before putting the unit in its normal
operational position.
h~d Ha'tenboer-Demi b.v.

Filter refill

As the E.W.T. Compound slowly dissolves in the product water it is required to refill the vessel approx. 2. 4
times per year. Use E.W.T. Compound only. To start refill put valves in 'by·pass' position

Replacing filter media

The recommended replace of the filter media is required every one full year of operation, depending on
operating conditions and authorities regulations. The filter requires penodic cleaning and internal inspection.

1. Put filter in by· pass position according to valves position diagram

2. Open drain valve a/o water outlet to release pressure and drain water inside vessel
3. Open top filling port and side service port
4. Empty filter through the service port
5. Rinse and brush the interior with clean water and drain filter
6. Inspect the double bottom of the filter and the "mushroom" filter nozzles.

U.V. "MARITIME" STERILISERS FOR FRESH WATER SYSTEMS

UV-installations for low capacities meet industrial and maritime demands.

A new low capacity, high quality ultraviolet disinfection system has been introduced by
Hatenboer-Demi b.v., the Maritime line. It is designed to provide industrial and maritime
[offshore] applications with a safe water supply. The installations are compact, but still
contain all necessary safety alarms and features of which Hatenboer-Demi "Berson UV-
system" is renowned for. The UV-installations can treat from 1 up to 10 m'/h and can
optional be supplied with a UV-sensor, hand wiper and electrical safety valve. In addition an
extra UV-alarm signal is available for remote monitoring The operational pressure of 7 Bars
emphasizes its industrial character. The units can be supplied for ships, rigs, hotels, private
residences and holiday cottages.

The units are easily retrofitted into existing pipe system to ensure effective microbiological
control of borehole, well or spring water. The system does not require dosing with
0
0
~
~
chemicals and provides insurance against recontamination of piped water mains. Based on
~

~
the germicidal propertieS of a mercury vapour lamp, the system has claimed to destroy
~ ~

~~ 99,9% of all contaminating bacteria, mould and viruses. UV treatment does not alter water
chemistry, smell taste or pH value.

The lamp which has an economical life of at least 8.000 hours, is fitted inside a 316L
stainless steel chamber. Apart from the lamp replacement, which is a simple routine, the
system requires less maintenance . On the chamber itself a "power on" indicator and hour
indicator are present and in case of an optional UV-sensor also an UV-indication is
_g ~ . available. Economical in operation the units consume between 40 and 100 watts.
. N
Qo
:.:g
The installation can be fitted with a UV-sensor to guard the disinfection process. Through
ageing of the UV-Iamp, fouling of the quartz sleeve or changes in the transmission the
Intensity may drop. The UV-sensor constantly guard this intensity and when it is beneath a
certain level an alarm exists. This alarm can be used to close a valve, as a indication that
the sleeves have to be wiped or as an indication that the UV-Iamp has to be replaced.

The wiping mechanism is unique for these kind of compact units. Particles present in the
water may foul the quart sleeve and easy operated wiping mechanism makes it possible to
clean the quartz sleeve without the need of stopping the disinfection process This feature
surely contributes to the ease of maintenance. In combination with an UV-sensor an
additional electrical valve can be applied to make sure that no untreated water passes the
UV-installation. Herewith a micro biological healthy and reliable water is guaranteed after
the UV -treatment.

The name Maritime directs to the high quality demands of the maritime segment. Demands
related to performance, safety and reliability in though circumstances. The compliance with
these demands makes the unit suitable for industrial applications as well.

Hatenboer-Demi b.v. is able to deliver standard and custom made UV-disinfection systems
for any water system up to 5.000 m'/hour, incl. the required pre-treatment equipment.

General safety precautions

1 General safety precautions.

1. 1 Hazards.

Warning!: When using electric tools, basic safety precautions should always be
followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury, including the
following.

For safe operation:

• Ultraviolet light in the UV-C band emitted by a high or low intensity mercury
vapour lamp is dangerous for unprotected eyes and bare skin. Always protect
eyes with safety glasses and do not look directly into a working UV lamp.
Cover skin with clothing and wear gloves.
• Never attempt to operate the UV lamp outside the treatment chamber.
• The UV lamp contains mercury, a heavy metal which is dangerous to the
environment. Please observe local municipal and factory safety regulations
when dealing with UV lamps.
• Handle all quartz components with extreme care, don't touch them by hand.
Preferably use clean cotton gloves.

It is possible that UV lamps are supplied in card boxes and need not be
removed until needed. Always handle the UV lamp assembly by the lamp
connectors since fingermarks will permanently damage the quartz envelope at
high temperatures.
• Never attempt to remove the quartz sleeve from the UV lamps while the
treatment chamber is in operation.
• The equipment must be grounded by means of a conductor of adequate cross
section. Also ensure that the UV chamber is grounded. A separate earth
connection may be fitted from the chamber to the earth pole.
• When you switch off the UV lamp(s) wait at least 15 minutes to let the UV
lamp(s) cool down before servicing or replacing the lamp(s) or lampholder(s).
UV lamps are working with high temperatures which will burn human skin,
melt plastics and burn other materials.

page 4
General safety precautions

• Keep work area clean. Cluttered areas and benches invite injuries.
• Consider work area environment. Keep work area well lit. Don't use power
tools in presence of flammable materials.
• Don't abuse cables. Keep cables from heat, oil and sharp edges.
• Maintain system with care. Keep the system clean for better and safer
performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
• Disconnect system, when not in use, before servicing, and when changing
accessories.
• Form the habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are
removed from the system before turning it on.
• The use of any other accessory or attachment other than recommended in
this operating instructions or the catalog may present a risk of personal injury.
• The system is in accordance with the relevant safety rules. Repairs should
only be carried out by qualified persons using original spare-parts otherwise
this may result in considerable danger to the user.

Save these instructions.

Note:

• When the UV lamp is not burning there is no UV-C light from the UV-Iamp.
• When the UV lamp is used in normal conditions there is no danger of UV-C
light from the chamber.

• If there is a viewing hole in the disinfection chamber (this means no UV-

detection) the UV-C light from the chamber is also not dangerous.

Intended use of the installation.

The UV disinfection installation is intended to be used only for disinfection of

water or UV-transparent fluids, such as:
· drinking water;
- soft drinks;

Handling, storage, transit, installation

2.3.1 The disinfection chamber.

Install the chamber using the following guidelines:

(refer to drawing Layout Berson disinfection chamber)

1. Locate the chamber where it will be easy to access tor service.

2. A clearance of at least 1100 mm or 650 mm tree space is required at the

right end of the chamber for servicing a UV lamp and quartz sleeve.

3. The chamber must preferably be mounted horizontally with the inlet on the
bottom and the outlet on top. It must be level, or mounted with the outlet
slightly elevated to prevent air from collecting at the top of the chamber.
Other mounting configurations are possible but care must be taken. If in
doubt consult Berson UV-techniek B.V. or the local agent regarding the
proposed configuration.

4. It is recommended to clean or sanitize the chamber before to install it.

2.3.2 Water protection.

It is necessary that the chamber be completely filled with fluid during operation.
Operating the system with the chamber partially or completely empty may cause
severe damage to the system.
,..-------.,..-,

2.3.3 Electrical installation.

2.3.3.1 Service requirement.

The power supply terminals are located in the end cap of the chamber. The
system has been set up tor the power system specified by the customer. If none

4.1.2 Setting the UV level indication of the unit.

The un~ has got four LEDS to indicate the performance of the unit, see drawing of the
front of the mounting plate. When lit, the first yellow LED indicates "power on". The
other three LEDS indicate the UV performance of the lamp:

UV active (green LED)

UV intensity low (yellow LED)
UValarm (red LED)

The UV level indication can be set by removing the screw on front of the end cover
plate and turning the potentiometer.

Turn the unit on and run with water flowing for a minimum of two hours. If the
red LED is lit after start-up turn the potentio meter counter clockwise until the
red will diminish and continue start-up. If the start-up period is finished turn the
potentia meter counter clockwise until the green and red LED are lit. Then turn
the potentiometer clockwise until the red LED just go"es out and leaving the
green LED lit. The unit is set now

Note : If both LED's, red and green, are burning at the same time this is O.K.,
as this is indicating the maximum setting of UV-signal output

After running the unit for 100 hours the lamp characteristics have reached their
final settings and the UV level then must be re-adjusted. This must be done as
described above

Disposal instructions

8 Disoosal instructions.

Lamp disposal:

• When a lamp is broken the mercury can be removed by using sulphur powder
to bind the mercury. The bound mercury can be easily transported to the
proper deposit place. Mercury has a vaporation time of several hours which
will cause no problems in properly ventilated rooms.

If a lamp is broken close immediate the valves in the water line.

• . Mercury is easily absorbed through the skin and its vapour can be inhaled. To
prevent this possibility, Berson's service ensures that all returned lamps are
safely disposed of and no mercury escapes into the environment.
Please call Berson Customer Service first before you send the UV lamp.

8.1 Incoming goods.

We have changed our incoming goods procedure. All materials which we receive
