TECH BULLETIN CHRySLER 46RE/47RE

Planetary/Sun Shell Updates

The 46/47RE transmission models were phased out at the end of 2003 and replaced by the 48RE. There are several differences between 46/47RE & 48RE units. Chrysler is now eliminating some of the previous 46/47RE components and replacing them with a 48RE upgrade package (D22582GK). Certain components may still be available individually, but only until inventories are depleted. Contents of the 48RE Upgrade Package is as follows: 1. 2. Sun Gear Shell The 48RE sun shell is much thicker than 46/47RE shells, resulting in other components changes. Sun Gear The sun gear shell snap ring grooves are wider apart on 48RE sun gears to accommodate the thicker shell. The shell & sun gear must be used as a set. Front Planetary The 48RE front planet is a 6-pinion compared to the 4 or 5-pinion 46/47RE planet and requires a thinner Torlon bushing (also included). The 6-pinion planet uses a 6-tab washed between the ring gear. Front Ring Gear Not only is the 48RE front ring gear thinner due to the shell thickness, the RR clutch friction tooth count was changed as well, from 58 teeth to 92 teeth. The 48RE RR clutch frictions are also included.
