Our generation today are much prone to social media. Social media is any website that

allows social interaction. It is growing rapidly throughout the world. As a 21st century learners,

internet and other kind of social media are highly needed in our schools, homes and everywhere.

It is transparent to us that social media is useful in today’s generation. It is a leisure, information

and considered as a bridge of communication to us. But, behind that, there is an effects that

social media can create that we need to know in engaging such technology.

The introduction of social media has changed the world in many ways. It affects each

individual in different ways. Today it can be used as a very helpful tool in changing a person’s

life. But in the same time, it can cause conflict which can negatively associated with social

media, the positives in communication all around, has made the world stronger and a better place

to live in.

Under the House Bill No. 5021 who is introduced by Representative Pantaleon D. Alvarez,

it is an act regulating the use of Social media, prescribing penalties and for other purposes. This

act shall be known as the “Social Media Regulation Act of 2017”. It is the policy of the state to

regulate the flow of true and fair information between different sources in order to enhance

information and communication technology for national benefit. It was also stated on Section 4

to 5 the responsibility of social media users. Every person who will communicate, exchange,

deliver, blog or share information through social media must observe a responsible and fair

exercise of his rights to free expression and opinion. Also, it was stated in section 5 the
responsibility of Social Media Networks to be responsible for ascertaining the veracity of the

to (P50,000).

Considering all above the pros and cons, it is necessary to develop certain regulation over

the use of such social media, especially for high school and college students. But still, students

should the choice to spend time socializing in an effective way. It should not hamper the school

or college performance, and it should be kept in mind that social media, creative virtual worlds

or that that drastically differ from reality. Students should develop the cognitive and intuitive

ability to analyze how much time they want really matters their life and how much of this virtual

life translate to real life.

This study is anchored on Media Ecology Theory (MET) aims to understand the social

impact of technology and communication (McLuhan, 1964). MET claims that media act directly

to shape and organize culture. Media ecology, or the study of how media and communication

processes influence human perception, feeling, understanding, and value, is focused around

communication studies (Parameswaran, 2008).

As society has evolved, its technology has also evolved. From the first books published to

the internet, society has both been affected by, and in turn affected, media. The rules of media set

forth by MET – enhancement, obsolescence, retrieval and reversal – show how technology

affects communication through the development of new technology.
