A General

The Geotechnical Contractor shall provide an Engineer or Geologist in the

field full-time during exploration activities. The Engineer/Geologist shall SAES-A-113
A1
supervise and observe all subsurface exploration operations, classify Sec. 7.2
samples and prepare log of borings, soundings, pits etc.

For the field tests, the Geotechnical Contractor shall utilize Inspection
SAES-A-113
A2 Department's list of SAEP-383 Approved Geotechnical Engineering
Sec. 7.1.1
Offices.

The Geotechnical Contractor shall furnish all labor, equipment, tools,

supervision, supplies and transportation required to perform the SAES A-113
A3
geotechnical investigation, exploration, testing, analyses and reporting in Sec. 8.1.1
accordance with ASTM D420 and with this standard

The Geotechnical Contractor shall immediately notify Saudi Aramco if

SAES-A-113
A4 initial field works and/or testing indicate a need for modifications in the
Sec. 8.1.1
geotechncial investigation scope of works

UTM coordinates and Mean Sea Level (MSL) elevations must be provided
for all field tests. MSL elevations and UTM coordinates must be shown on
SAES-A-113
A5 the field test log. If local coordinates and elevations are available, a table
Sec. 8.1.3
shall be included in the report showing both local and UTM/MSL data for
each boring location.

SAES-A-113
A6 All boring logs must be prepared in Saudi Aramco Boring log format
Sec. 10.2

The Geotechnical Contractor shall comply with all aspects of the Saudi
SAES-A-113
A7 Aramco Construction Safety Manual and all safety programs and policies
Sec. 8.1.1
of Saudi Aramco.

B Boreholes

The location and depth of boreholes shall be as specified in the SAES-A-113

B1
geotechnical investigation Scope of Work. Sec. 8.2.1

Saudi Aramco: Company General Use

Automatic SPT hammers shall be used and standard penetration tests are
to be performed in accordance with ASTM D1586 at depths of 0.15, 0.75, SAES-A-113
B2
1.5,2.25, 3.0, 3.75, 4.5m and at 1.5m intervals thereafter and at changes Sec. 8.2.1
in soil strata.

If the soil is cohesive, undisturbed thin-wall tube samples shall be

SAES-A-113
B3 obtained in accordance with ASTM D1587. Double-tube core barrels shall
Sec. 8.2.1
be used for rock coring

If hand excavation is required, soils shall be sampled and logged including SAES-A-113
B4
estimation of the relative density (i.e. loose, medium dense etc.) Sec. 8.2.1

Groundwater measurements shall be made after stabilization of the water SAES-A-113

B5
table in the borehole Sec. 8.2.1

All boreholes shall be sealed with sand-cement mortar at the end of SAES-A-113
B6
groundwater measurements. Sec. 8.2.1

C Electronic Piezocone Penetration Testing

All cone penetration shall be Electronic Piezocone Penetration Testing

SAES-A-113
C1 (PCPT) with automatic data recording. Manual or hydraulic cone
Sec. 8.2.2
penetration testing is not allowed.

Cone penetration testing shall include pore pressure measurements (i.e

SAES-A-113
C2 piezocone). Where stiff/dense soils are encountered, the piezocone shall
Sec. 8.2.2
be replaced with a higher capacity electronic cone.

For all cone penetration calibration, testing and data reporting, ASTM SAES-A-113
C3
D5778 shall be followed Sec. 8.2.2

D Cross-hole Seismic Testing

The location and depth of cross-hole seismic tests shall be as specified in

SAES-A-113
D1 the geotechnical investigation Scope of Work and exact location should be
Sec. 8.2.4
determined by Contractor's field Geologist based on field conditions.

Cross-hole Seismic Tests shall be as described in ASTM D4428. One

shot hole and two receiver holes shall be used. The tests shall be
SAES-A-113
D2 conducted at a minimum 0.75m interval to depth of 10m or as specified in
Sec. 8.2.4
scope of work. Only the shot hole shall be sampled and logged. The
receiver holes need not be sampled and logged.

E Shallow Refraction Seismic Soundings

The geophone spread should be twelve geophones at 2 m intervals for a

total of 24m spread. Soundings shall be taken at least twice at each SAES-A-113
E1
location with energy source at 0 and again at 26m. Additional sounding Sec. 8.2.5
should be taken if the results do not clearly define the rock layers

Seismic refraction testing and analysis shall be in accordance with ASTM SAES-A-113
E2
D5777 Sec. 8.2.5

F Test Pits

Saudi Aramco: Company General Use

Unless otherwise specified in scope of work, the pits should extend to a
depth of 1m and logged. Density testing per ASTM D1556 or ASTM
D6938 should be performed on undisturbed soils at depths 0.0, 0.3, 0.6, SAES-A-113
F1
and every 0.3m thereafter. Representative bulk samples of soil layers Sec. 8.2.7
shall be taken for Compaction testing and CBR testing per ASTM D1883
respectively.

G Percolation Testing

Percolation testing shall be performed as described in SAEHC-S-02. The

depth of the percolation test holes should be the same as the depth of SAES-A-113
G1
proposed trenches or seepage pits and the test holes should be uniformly Sec. 8.2.12
spread over the proposed absorption field.
