Magnetic Filtration MAGNOM Argos Report Ago 2019
The equipments include CAT 773 trucks, CAT D9 and D10 dozers, CAT 988
loaders and BUCYRUS RH40E shovels.
TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
During the life cycle of any fluid system, ferrous contaminants are present and are
the catalyst for the "wear chain reaction" (and the cause of impending catastrophic

failure). The "wear chain reaction" is described as a few particles that circulate in the
system and generate additional particles; And these additional particles along with
the original particles, which generate even more particles at an exponential rate.
Ferrous particles are the greatest threat to a hydraulic system and the mere
presence of these particles could mean problems in the form of 'Decreased'
performance and 'Increased' maintenance costs.
The basic form of core magnetic filtration technology consists of a permanent power
source provided by a magnet that is sandwiched between two carbon steel plates.
The following figure shows a graphic representation of the basic technology.
This means that the cores deliver a "minimum" pressure differential when they are
empty and full of contaminants. The minimum pressure differential feature allows
this solution to be located anywhere in the hydraulic system and in "full fluid flow"
capability. This even allows the placement of a magnetic core before a sensitive
variable displacement pump. These cores have a systematic filtration capacity and
receive all the fluid flow and all the contaminant from the system.

FIRST RESULTS
Two months after having installed the MAGNOM technology in the ARGOS
equipments, when they changed the oil filter on the BUCYRUS RH40E SHOVEL, it was
possible to detect visually in the PFU magnetic pre-filter, the accumulation of metallic
particles as observed in the following photos:
PREVENTIVE ACTION
When checking the PFU magnetic filter and detecting the large amount of grime,

ARGOS consult to their Caterpillar Dealer, about the condition of the engine that had
been repaired 3 months ago.
The CAT Dealer opened the engine and found that two bolts had been misplaced and
damaged inside the engine. They were able to correct the fault and the engine was
able to continue operation without further damage.
In this sense, the MAGNOM magnetic filter served as a preventive failure indicator
and at the same time retained the iron particles that are in the oil, reducing friction
in the engine.
