REFLECTIVE JOURNAL

As a student nurse, I've learned to value the significance of infection and

preventative control as I listened to the pre-recorded discussion. According to
our role in the healthcare industry, healthcare students are responsible for learning
about infection prevention and control procedures, becoming proficient in infection
prevention and control skill techniques, and becoming knowledgeable about
infection prevention and control guidelines. Students must continuously practice in
the classroom and laboratory settings to become proficient in infection prevention
and control techniques. They must then apply what they have learned during their
clinical rotation under the guidance and supervision of their clinical instructor or
placement preceptor and faculty. I must cooperate with other healthcare
professionals and students as a student of healthcare to create a secure workplace.

Techniques for infection prevention and control might not always appear
obvious to a learner. As I start to provide safe treatment in accordance with
infection prevention and control criteria, there are certain general principles and
guidelines that can assist me. Cleaning from the cleanest to the dirtiest area is one
common rule that is put into effect. Knowing how to put on and take off PPE
properly is another factor to consider while wearing personal protective equipment
(PPE). I must evaluate pertinent infection prevention and control resources, such as
discipline-specific standards, healthcare agency rules, and course learning
objectives, before engaging in clinical practice. For specific protocols, I will always
consult the office for clinical placement and the school. I will plan care and
determine where infection prevention and control procedures will be used to reduce
the risk of infection transmission with the help of my clinical instructor. For
example, the conduct of a point-of-care risk assessment before each contact with
patient and the patient’s surroundings to make sure the necessary infection control
measures are in place. Know how to break the chain of transmission in practice and
the process of infection.

I came to the realization that I should also understand the infection

prevention and control procedures and regulations needed for my healthcare
assignment. For instance, the standards will alter depending on whether I am placed
in a community environment or in a hemodialysis unit (HDU).

I am responsible for my actions as a healthcare student, thus I look for

resources and support networks before being posted to help overall plan of care.
Additionally, I might have to fill out and submit reports on specific instances (e.g.,
needle stick injury).

The main point of the discussion was to always perform proper hand
hygiene to prevent cross contamination. Due to regular and prolonged exposure to
a variety of potential pathogens in the dialysis environment, both hemodialysis
patients and the dialysis staff are at risk of developing healthcare-associated
illnesses. According to what I've learned, hemodialysis patients are susceptible to a
variety of diseases, including bloodstream infections, localized vascular access
infections, blood-borne infections with the hepatitis B, C, and/or HIV, as well as
airborne infections. Infected patients, contaminated equipment, environmental
surfaces, and contaminated water are all examples of infection sources.

Due to the HD settings' clearly heightened risk of infection transmission,

additional to the typical basic precautions, specific and tougher infection prevention
and control methods were developed and put into place. Contaminated hands are
one of the primary methods of infection transmission. One of the most efficient
ways to stop or stop the spread of infectious diseases is regular hand washing. But
certain procedures must be followed to guarantee its efficacy. The act of washing
one's hands with any liquid, with or without soap, in an effort to get rid of dirt or
microbes is known as handwashing. It is the most successful strategy for lowering
the danger of spreading infectious diseases. Hand washing is the most crucial and
fundamental practice for avoiding and managing illnesses, yet it cannot be
emphasized enough. It is the only infection control strategy that truly works.
