ESL FOCUS 2 SYLLABUS – CLASS 10A


School Year: 2023 – 2024
I. COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course aims at helping learners to achieve an overall English language proficiency of Intermediate User defined as A2+/ B1 level on the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course is designed to prepare the foundation for students to get ready for
IELTS-oriented lessons in grade 11 & 12. Specifically, at the end of the school year students are expected to be able to:
Reading skills
- Get familiar with, practice various types of academic texts on different topics.
- Get famililar with, practice types of questions in IELTS reading skill.
Listening skills
- Follow and understand a range of academic spoken materials and questions in recorded dialogues, narratives or standard speech.
- Get famimilar with and practice listening for specific information, main ideas and opinions.
- Get familiar with a range of listening task types including completion, matching, and multiple.
Speaking skills
- Communicate efficiently in face to face situations requiring direct exchange of information on familiar matters.
- Be able to respond to questions in task 1 and task 2 IELTS Speaking on guided topics.
Writing skills
- Understand the sentence basics and paragraph basics.
- Produce short review, story, descriptive paragraph, and email/ letter on different topics.
- Brainstorm, develop, organize ideas and compose paragraphs on guided topics.

Grammar
- Demonstrate good control of essential grammatical structures on tenses; verb patterns, comparatives; conditionals; relative clauses; passive and
reported speech.
Vocabulary:
- Understand a range of vocabulary in context. Demonstrate some control of high frequency idioms, collocations, shades of meaning, phrasal
verbs, fixed phrases in context in guided topic.
Exam skill: Be familiar with IELTS test format.
