QUESTION 1

1.1 Below is a street map of part of an area where Wayne, the tour
guide, operates.

A B C

↑ N

1.1.1 Give the grid reference of the Van Riebeeck Sport Stadium. (2)

1.1.2 Write down the names of the streets on either sides of the City
Hall. (2)

1.1.3 A taxi driver drives out of the parking area of Van Riebeeck Sports
Stadium. He then turns right into George Street. He then turns left
into Montague Street and continues driving until he reaches
Marsh Street.
What is the compass direction of Van Riebeeck Sport Stadium
from his current position? (2)

1.1.4 A tourist wants to go to the hospital entrance from a restaurant in

Bruns Street (position marked X). On the map this distance is
8,9 cm. Determine the actual distance if 1 cm on map represents
0,3 km. (2)

1.2 The picture below represents the swimming pool at Van Riebeeck
Sport Stadium where Wayne always guides the tourists to.

The inside measurements of the walls of the swimming pool are

as follows:
Length, l = 50 m, breadth, b = 25 m and depth, h = 1,5 m

1.2.1 Calculate the maximum capacity (volume) of water the swimming

pool can hold.
Use formula: V  l  b  h (3)

1.2.2

http://www.sumuduengineering.com/productcat/bowsers/data/images

The management at Van Riebeeck Sport Stadium wants to

recycle the pool water. They drain it all into the water bowser in
the picture above. The water bowser has a radius = 1,75 m and a
length/height = 3,9 m.

Determine the number of water bowsers needed to drain and

empty this swimming pool.
Hint: first calculate the volume of each bowser using (5)
V   r 2 h and   3,14

1.2.3 After draining the pool, all its walls and its floor are to be
repainted. Determine the total area of the pool to be repainted
using the formula:
A  l  b  2 h (l  b) (2)

1.2.4 If 1litre of paint used covers 15 m 2 , determine the total quantity of

paint needed for a single coat for this pool.
Round answer to nearest litre.

QUESTION 3

The tax table below shows the rates at which tax was levied in South Africa for
the 2013/2014 tax year

Mr Zenge, a 47 year old university lecturer, earned a taxable income of

R31 953,42 per month during the 2013/2014 tax year.

Use the above Table to show that his monthly tax (PAYE) is R6 629,13. Show all
calculations.
