changed to reflect young peoples’ more

Korean Culture In Korean, when addressing someone, it is normally done in the form of “name + title,” like “김 (family name) + 선생님
(teacher, polite vocative form),” or “이 (family name) 변호사님 (attorney).” The title is often used alone, with the name
omitted. Now, if you imagine yourself at a meeting at the White House with many senators and members of congress
in attendance, and consider how you and others would address each other, with the English rule of “title + name,” with
“Secretary X,” “Senator Y,” and “Congresswoman Johnson” being the normal forms of address, you can easily understand
and adapt to the Korean way of addressing people. When you are speaking in Korean, pretend you are at the White
House and that everyone around you is important.
For example, if you become a teacher in Korea, and if your name is John Smith, they will call you “선생님 (teacher)” or
“스미스 선생님.”

Unlike some other, more rarefied
genres of art, Korean folk painting, or
minhwa, targeted the common people,
and thus reflected their tastes, values
and aspirations. In the traumatic
20th century, minhwa suffered from
declining interest, but Korea’s growing
cultural confidence has led the public
to rediscover the genre. As local and
even international interest in folk
paintings grows, some artists are
even reinterpreting the genre in a
manner that appeals to contemporary
sensibilities.

At the start of a new year a new semester or a new season, it’s common for people to make resolutions and set new
goals. There’s an old adage, expressed in Chinese characters, that people in Korea often use in this context: jaksimsamil
(작심삼일), which means “a firm resolution is good for three days.” Maybe the secret is to make resolutions that are
reasonable enough to be kept. That way, we won’t be tempted to give up after three days. With spring just around the
corner, now might be another ideal time to start thinking about and working toward a new set of goals.

In Korea, the habit of shaking one’s leg is seen unfavorably. This is due to the understanding that by
shaking one’s leg, a person shows his or her anxiety, causing the other party to feel anxious as well.
Therefore, there are many people who will use the traditional saying “if you shake your leg, fortune
runs away” to fix this habit. In the West, however, the act of someone interfering in one’s activities or
bodily features is seen unfavorably due to the emphasis on personal territory; therefore, such habits
may be seen differently in accordance with different cultures.

Korean food is more popular overseas
now than it has ever been. Even in the
United States, pop culture references
to favorites like bibimbap show
that Korean cuisine, once virtually
unknown, has gone mainstream.
As Korean food goes global,
however, pioneering chefs are
incorporating new and sometimes
foreign techniques and ingredients
to create a new cuisine that is both

In Korea, people hold an ancestral memorial service to thank their ancestors
for a good harvest each fall. This tradition is called Chuseok. As masses of
people migrate to their hometowns during the Chuseok holiday, train tickets
to different parts of Korea are sold out and highways are packed. People
gather in their hometowns with their families and relatives to eat traditional
Chuseok food and play a variety of folk games. A type of rice cake made of
newly harvested rice, songpyeon is one of the traditional foods enjoyed during
Chuseok. The ganggangsullae dance is a traditional folk dance performed under
the full moon on the night of Chuseok. What are the biggest traditional holidays
in your country? How do people spend their traditional holidays?

form a truly remarkable sisterhood.

are providers for their families, leaders
of their communities and stewards of
the sea. Their sustainable harvesting

Every year in Korea, students take the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test in the winter. When the

exam season approaches, there are many street vendors selling yeot, a Korean sticky rice cake. Many
people give students who take the exam toilet paper or forks as a gift. Toilet paper means they hope the
student “unrolls” the exam problems as easily as toilet paper is unrolled, and forks mean that they hope
the student picks the right answer, just as a fork picks up food. In contrast, people don’t eat seaweed
soup before taking an exam because they think that if you eat the sleek, slippery seaweed, you’ll end
up failing your exam just like falling down on a slippery floor. Is there anything you try to avoid before
important things like an exam? If you have a friend taking an exam, how about giving them yeot or
sticky rice cake as a gift?
