Interior designers have a knack for pulling together furniture
and accessories to create rooms with widespread appeal. But
not every homeowner has the resources to hire a professional
to help turn their interior from drab to fab. Fortunately, it
doesnt always take a pro to transform a homes interior.
The key to creating a beautiful room is planning. Designers
do it and so should you. Measure the dimensions of the room
and create a sketch of the area using graph paper or computer
software. Be sure to plot any windows or doors on the
drawing so that you will be aware of obstacles.
Homeowners unsure of what they want should browse
through magazines or pictures on the Web for inspiration.
Search for key phrases that describe your design style, such
as Tuscan, farmhouse, country, colonial, etc. Then read up on
the components of these styles that define it. This will help
you select items that fit with the style.
Once a particular style has been chosen, create a design
board just like the professionals. Cut out swatches of fabric,
select paint swatches, find magazine pictures that fit with
your goal and arrange them on a piece of poster board. See
how the items work together. If you are unsure of colors, see
which shades were used in the inspiring picture and
determine if it will coordinate with your home.
When designing, identify or create a focal point in the room
and build off of that. This may be a large window, fireplace,
or even the entertainment center if its a family room. Place
furniture around the focal point and then move outward.
Its also important to keep scale in mind. Large walls or tall
ceilings will create plenty of wall space. A small print or wall
hanging will be lost in such an area. Be sure to choose
furnishings and accessories that fit with the scale of the room.
In other words, a huge sectional may overpower a small
living room.
When choosing colors, make sure they are cohesive.
Research the color wheel that artists use to help with
designing the room. Some colors are complementary or
opposites and still work together. Homeowners nervous about
color should choose a color from fabric or furniture and use a
few different shades of the same color in the room. Select an
accent color that can be used on trim or as a spot of color on
a pillow or accessory.
When plotting wall hangings or other decor, odd numbers
often look more pleasing to the eye. Experiment with
different sizes of framed artwork or different shaped
accessories for visual appeal. For example, a few rectangular
shaped items with a circular clock and a conical flower vase
can mix it up in the room. This is where looking at magazine
layouts can be extremely helpful.
Many stores sell items that mimic the look of higher-priced
items. When copying a designer room, select pieces that are
similar, but not necessarily the same brands. Consider
shopping at second-hand stores or antique shops for
discounted pieces. With a little new fabric or stain, many
items can look like new again. Shopping online also may
enable shoppers to find items more readily and see how they
look in staged rooms.
When designing, it never hurts to think outside of the box.
Items that were intended for outside may work well inside as
well. Hanging lanterns or plant stands could be put to use in a
rustic room. Save some money by making some items
yourself. For instance, if you cannot find a particular throw
pillow or drapery that fits with your style, go to a fabric store
and purchase fabric to make your own.
Decorating doesnt have to cost a fortune or look like you
pieced odd items together. By following the guidelines of a
designer room and selecting lower-priced items that mimic
the shape and scale of similar accessories, its possible for
any homeowner to create a room for less.

Cheap ways to freshen the house
Toss a used dryer sheet in the linen
closet to keep sheets and towels smelling
freshly washed.
Grow herbs in a window box. When
the breeze blows, the fresh smell of basil
or rosemary will come into the home.
Keep fresh flowers or plants inside the
home. Theyll filter the air and provide a
pleasant aroma.
Use lemons to clean the sink and
kitchen surfaces for a fresh, citrus smell.
Bake some cookies or another dessert
for a wonderful aroma.
Place a tray of fallen pine needles on a
cookie sheet sprayed with a little water
into a warm oven. The pine scent will
fill the house.
Push cloves into an orange. Hang the
clove-studded orange on a string and
place in a corner. The orange clove scent
will slowly fill the room.
Open up the windows and let
fresh air in.
Soak cotton balls in vanilla and stash
around the house.
Bathe and groom pets frequently.
Use a favorite-scented reed diffuser,
which will lightly scent the house for
weeks.
Keep a pot of water with potpourri on
a wood-burning stove or radiator for a
wonderful scent.
Most people want their living spaces to
smell clean and fresh. However, pets,
aromas from the kitchen, cigarette
smoke, and other things can make a
home smell bad. Here are inexpensive
ways to remedy all that.
Find the source of the bad smell and
eliminate it. This could be a garbage pail
sitting in the sun or sink disposal thats
filled with food debris.
Use a chunk of cedar or sandalwood in
drawers and closets for a fresh woodsy
smell.
Simmer some cinnamon sticks and
water in a pot on the stove.
Dab a favorite essential oil onto a
piece of fabric and stash it wherever
you want a pleasant smell even
in the car.
ENTRY
DOOR
TIPS
1. If you can see light around
your main entry door from the
inside, the door is hard to close or
lock, or the door itself is warped,
its time to consider a new door.
2. Even if you cant see light, air
may be moving through gaps in
the weather stripping at a
surprising rate. On a very cold or
hot day, hold the back of your
hand an inch or so away from the
bottom and perimeter of your
door. If you can feel air moving or
a significant cold spot, thats a
signal your existing door could
benefit from better sealing.
3. Determine what role you
would like an entry door to play
on your homes exterior. Do you
want it to be a focal point with a
splash of color? Is it important
that you have decorative glass in
the door system? Will you need
vented sidelites to allow more
light and air into your home?
Search the web for Door
Designer and My Saved Door
online tools to help visualize how
a new door will look on your
home.
4. Think about the weather
conditions your homes door faces
along with your energy bills. If
either run to the extreme,
consider replacing your entryway
with a high-performance
fiberglass door (which has four
times more insulation than wood
doors). You can also request
features such as the Tru-Defense
Door System from Therma-Tru
Doors that features enhanced
weatherstripping, corner seal pad,
door bottom sweep and profiled
sill that all work together to
provide strength and stability in
your entry door.

Keep Your Home
Exterior
in Top Shape
Feel like cheating? Forget what the inside of
your home looks like for just a bit and focus
on your homes exterior.
The exterior of your home makes a lasting
and daily impression on your friends and
family, along with your neighbors, says
Mark Clement, professional contractor and
host of MyFixItUpLife home improvement
radio show. While the weather is good, my
advice is to get outside and fix up problem
areas, work on the landscaping and invest in
products that make your homes exterior not
only look great, but work great.
Clement, who is in the middle of an
Contractor Mark Clement installs polymer roof tiles on his home.
ongoing renovation of his 100-year-old home
in Pennsylvania, recommends assessing your
needs and then diving in on projects. On the
exterior of the home there are three big,
critical areas I recommend people evaluate
every year the roof, the windows and the
entry door. Those are key areas because, along
with being visual focal points of the home,
they help protect a house from severe weather.
And, if you have problems with older
windows, doors or roofing tiles, youre
looking at higher energy bills and growing
problems that can affect your wallet long-
term.

Not All Painters Tapes Are Created Equal
Four qualities to look for that will assure a superior paint job
Dont overlook
the importance
of painters tape
when
planning
your next
paint job
Whether youre an experienced DIYer or painting your first
apartment, one of the most important decisions you can make
in assuring a quality paint job is the choice of painters tape. The
right painters tape can make all the difference in achieving
clean, straight paint lines, and protecting surfaces that you dont
want painted, such as glass, woodwork, wallboard, ceilings, and
carpeting.
Before you buy your paint and painting tools, do your
homework on the variety of tapes on the market. Read package
labels carefully before making your selection. For most surfaces,
a premium-quality painters tape will do the job. Here are four
essential qualities to consider:
Resistance to bleeding. One of the biggest problems painters
face is paint seeping under or bleeding beyond tape
edges. This can cause messy lines and uneven workmanship, and
result in the need for frequent touch ups. One product painting
professionals recommend is Bloc-it, a high performance,
professional grade painters tape from IPG thats treated with a
proprietary formula that eliminates bleed through, and delivers a
consistently clean paint line. An independent comparison study
of leading brands of painters tape found that Bloc-it had the
least amount of bleed on a painted drywall surface, which is
among the most common wall surfaces in homes today.
Flexibility. If you have many architectural features or curved
surfaces to paint around, consider tapes with fine crepe paper
backing which bend and drape easily around light switches,
moldings, window sashes, and door frames.
Ease of removal. A low-adhesive tape allows for easy removal,
without leaving any residue or damage to the surface to which it
is applied. Its a good idea to test your tape to make sure it
doesnt pull off the paint; if it does, youll need to purchase one
with less adhesive.
UV resistance. Look for ratings that indicate the number of
days the tape can be left in place and in direct sunlight. This is
important to know to avoid adhesive transfer from the back of
the tape to the wall surface.
Its essential that you educate yourself about the characteristics
of painters tapes and understand the surfaces you will be
working with before you make your tape selection. Its a
decision that will go a long way towards helping you achieve a
quality painting job.

Before beginning a home improvement
project, homeowners should construct a
budget to ensure the project is a success.
Things to consider
when budgeting
your home improvement project
Home improvement projects have become de
rigueur for todays homeowners. Be it a
kitchen remodel or the ever popular man cave
project, home improvement projects remain a
goal for many homeowners.
As enticing as a home improvement project
might be, no project can be successful until a
budget has been established. The right budget
will keep homeowners from going deep into
debt when improving their homes, ensuring
that, upon the projects completion, they can
fully enjoy their revamped castles without the
specter of significant debt hanging ominously
over their heads.
Before beginning a home improvement
project, homeowners can take the following
things into consideration.
Personal finances: It sounds simple, but
homeowners must examine their finances
before starting a home improvement project.
Just because a bank will loan out money for a
project doesnt mean the project is affordable.
Homeowners should compare their monthly
expenses with their incomes, and then
determine whats left that might be able to go
toward a project. Monthly expenses include
everything from groceries to mortgage
payments. When the comparison between
monthly expenses and monthly income has
been made, homeowners can get a grasp of just
what they can and cannot afford.
Credit score: Many homeowners finance
home improvement projects with loans from
the bank. Particularly in the current economy
when banks are being forced to tighten
lending requirements, securing such loans isnt
easy. Homeowners with significant credit card
debt should eliminate such debt before
beginning a project. Doing so serves multiple
purposes. First and foremost, eliminating
outstanding debt will free up more money to
allocate toward the project. Eliminating debt
will also make loan applicants more attractive
to prospective creditors, increasing their
chances of securing a loan and a lower interest
rate.
The projects priority: Budgeting a home
improvement project also involves being
honest as to just how necessary the project is.
For example, a man cave might be a dream
project, but should it be a priority over other
things around the house? If wear and tear is
taking its toll on the roof, for instance, the
money going toward the man cave should
probably be allocated to replacing the roof
instead. If a project is low on the priority list
but high on the want list, re-examine those
projects higher up on the priority list to
determine if they are more deserving of
immediate attention and funds than vanity
projects.
Overrun costs: Not every home improvement
project will come in at or under budget. Many,
in fact, go over budget due to a host of factors.
Homeowners should not be caught off guard
when a project goes over budget. Instead, plan
for the project to go over budget and expect
such frustration. Allocate extra money in the
original budget for overrun costs. This will
reduce stress and frustration, and if the project
comes in under budget, then theres extra
money when the project is completed.

paint color.
Show me the color! Thats become one of the most
common requests for homeowners in todays
marketplace as people look to add more colorful features
to their homes as part of remodeling and new
construction projects.
A well-chosen color scheme for a homes exterior can
bring out architectural details, downplay flaws and
enhance the overall look of the home, says Kate Smith,
president of Sensational Color. I always recommend
starting from the top down when considering the colors
for a home. Start with the roof, work down to the siding,
then consider the windows, entry door and trim.
When offering color consultations on home exteriors,
Smith begins with the roof. Depending on the style of a
home, as much as 40 percent or more of the visual you
get when looking at a house is the roof, says Smith, a
color consultant for DaVinci Roofscapes. The more
roof that is shown, the more important it is to allow the
roof color to help define the homes style.
Im a great fan of color blends for roofs, which you can
easily find in polymer roofing products. When you select
blends with different shades of a color or two in it, the
entire roof seems to merge and unify the home exterior.
This softens the roof visually and provides you with
more long-term options for accent colors to pull out
from the roofing blend color.
After determining a roof color, Smith will then look at
the siding of the home to determine how the texture
plays into the overall homes appeal. Fixed features like
stone, brick and stucco need to be considered, along with
paint colors for some exteriors.
Moving to the windows, Smith believes a growing trend
for homeowners is to select energy-efficient vinyl framed
windows with color exteriors to complement the overall
look of a homes exterior.
There are product lines from Simonton Windows for
both replacement and new construction windows and
patio doors that offer unique color options such as Brick,
Pine, Chocolate, Bronze, Cream and Driftwood, says
Smith. These frame colors, when matched with trim
pieces such as crossheads, shutters and mouldings,
create stunning accents. Ive seen that urethane pieces
from Fypon accept paint colors extremely well and can
help to make the windows and doors more focal
features of the home.
Both garage and entry doors are also primary products
that beg for color on a homes exterior. According to
Smith, having a door that is painted in a bright, warm
color can focus attention on the welcoming aspect of a
home.
Generally, if a garage door is clearly visible from the
street, its best to blend its color to the siding and
trim, says Smith. When the garage is in line with the
front door or behind the home, you can potentially
add more color. But, keep in mind that you want the
main entry door to pop more than the garage, so
reserve your key color push for that area of the home.
One of the easiest ways to add color to the front door
is to select an entryway especially designed for
painting. The Classic-Craft Canvas Collection from
Therma-Tru features smooth, paintable surfaces on
fiberglass doors with embossment details so that
homeowners can select the paint color they wish to
accent their energy-efficient entryway.
Color fascinates all of us, but some people are afraid
to make a mistake by using the wrong colors, says
Smith. If you have a Colonial-style home with a blend
of grays on a roof and white or cream siding, you can
easily make the house details pop out with red window
frames and a red front door. Or, you can have an Arts-
and-Crafts style house with an Aberdeen blend of five
neutral colors on the roof that flows down to a rustic
wood siding. Deep green accents around the windows,
trim and entry door would perfectly accent that type of
home.

Stop clogged
home gutters
Faced with the prospect of another season spent
precariously climbing a ladder and reaching inside to clear
out debris and leaves, many homeowners are considering
the installation of a gutter protection system. And with so
many different types available, finding the right fit is
always so easy.
A gutter protection system is a cover or barrier that
prevents leaves and large items, such as twigs or blown-
around matter, from lodging in a homes gutters and
eventually preventing rain runoff from draining
effectively. Clogged gutters and downspouts have been
known to contribute to rainwater pooling around the
foundation of a home, potentially causing seepage issues.
Blocked gutters can also be a haven for stagnant water,
which breeds mosquitoes and other insects and potentially
harmful bacteria.
To combat these issues, manufacturers have come up with
a series of protection systems that allow water to enter the
gutter while keeping debris out of it. Gutter protection
systems range from do-it-yourself options to professionally
installed products. There are a few different styles, and
each offer their share of pros and cons.
Screen: A mesh or screen system consists of a screening
material that fits inside or over the gutter. It serves as a
sieve, allowing the water through but blocking leaves and
debris. This system is affordable and can be a DIY project.
But over a period of time the mesh itself can be blocked
with a build-up of debris and will need periodic cleaning.
Also, in some screened systems water can freeze up in the
screen openings, causing ice dams.
Aluminum covers: There are many different
aluminum options. Some work with a small crevice
along the top that is narrow enough for the rainwater
to enter but not allow debris inside. They may not
allow as much water to enter as a mesh system because
they cover a greater surface area over the gutter. Closed
systems also may provide an area for insects to make
nests.
Foam inserts: A relatively inexpensive protection
system is a foam insert. These pieces of porous foam
are fitted inside the gutter, allowing water to flow
through (albeit a little more slowly) while keeping
leaves out. Foam inserts are an easy do-it-yourself
project and can serve as a test of the efficacy of gutter
systems before a more expensive system is purchased.
Surface tension products: These are closed plastic or
aluminum products where the water entry holes or
channels are on the bottom and sides of the product.
This way nothing can ever get clogged from above.
The system works by water surface tension; the
rainwater will adhere to the product and then flow into
the bottom or side holes. The nose of these products
may have to be kept clean or the surface tension may
not occur.
When it comes to gutter protection systems, there are a
number of options to consider. Homeowners can
experiment with different low-cost systems to see if
one works before contracting to have a permanent
guard put in place.
DID YOU KNOW?
Radon
is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that
comes from the decay of uranium found in
most soils. Radon can enter the home by
moving up through the ground and into the
air above before moving into a home in a
variety of ways, including through cracks in
solid floors, through construction joints,
and through cracks in walls. Gaps in
suspended floors and around service pipes
are additional entry points for radon. Once
radon enters a home, it then becomes
trapped inside, where buildup can occur.
Radon buildup can potentially be very
harmful or even fatal. A radioactive gas,
radon is among the leading causes of lung
cancer in the United States. In fact, only
smoking causes more lung cancer deaths
than radon, which can enter a home
whether that home is new, old, well-sealed,
or drafty. Homeowners concerned about
radon, which is invisible and odorless,
should have their homes tested.

It is widely known that improvements to kitchens and
bathrooms often reap the greatest return on investment. When
making changes to the kitchen, paying attention to the trend
of kitchen entertaining can make the room even more valuable
-- should a homeowner choose to sell at a later point in time.
Gearing renovations around kitchen entertaining also can
make the space desireable for current homeowners.
Here are some renovation decisions to consider that can make
the kitchen an ideal gathering spot for family and friends.
* Space: The best kitchens for entertaining are roomy and
feature an open floor plan. For homeowners who have limited
space, the first decision may be to expand the kitchen by
building an extension on the home or taking down a wall.
Many homeowners find that spacious eat-in-kitchens are
preferable over a small kitchen and formal dining area. So if a
dining room abuts the kitchen, remove the wall to create a
large kitchen space.
* Company cleanup: Think about large sinks that can
accommodate tall pots and pans, such as a double-basin apron
sink. Drawer-style dishwashers can be installed so that delicate
china and glassware can be washed separately from grimy pots.
This segregated style means homeowners can save money by
washing smaller loads as needed.
* Large table: Homeowners who do a lot of hosting can benefit
from a table that seats many. Purchase a large table or one that
can be expanded with a drop-in leaf.
* Hidden appliances: The kitchen should be decorated
according to homeowners preferences. Key appliances such as
dishwashers, refrigerators and even ovens can be masked with
cabinet facing, so they blend right into the rest of the cabinetry.
A larger refrigerator with features for entertaining, such as room
for platters or bakery cakes, is ideal for the host and hostess. A
separate beverage drawer eliminates the need to open the
refrigerator repeatedly, plus its at a great height for kids looking
for juice boxes.
* Lighting: Homeowners should consider many different
lighting sources. Pendant lights over islands illuminate these
work stations. Recessed lighting under cabinets can brighten
countertop areas that tend to be dark. A chandelier or bold
fixture over the table shows off the amazing meal.
Because the kitchen is such a gathering spot, renovations to this
room should reflect how much foot traffic and use the kitchen
gets.
Make Entertaining
the Focal Point
of Kitchen Design
A curved countertop serves as extra seating around the prep
area, while a large table is perfect for serving big meals.
A quick glance at the market capitalization for the big home
improvement chains reveals just how popular the home
improvement movement has become.
Commitments to work, family and social life can make it
hard to get everything done around the house. However, the
following projects are ideal for the weekend warrior who
wants to start and finish a project over the course of a few
days.
* Paint up a storm. Painting can be the ideal weekend
project, one that truly gives homeowners a sense of
accomplishment. When done correctly, painting can give a
room or rooms an entirely new feel.
When attempting to complete a painting project in one
weekend, be sure to choose rooms that only need paint. In
rooms with significant plaster work to be done, the project
will likely take longer than the weekend, as the plaster will
need to be patched before it dries and then get sanded
(rooms with only minor plaster damage should be more
weekend-friendly). Choose smaller rooms for weekend
painting projects and reap the rewards of a weekend well
spent.

Breathe Easier by Cutting Down
on Indoor Dust
Whats something that can be found in just about every house
around the world? Dust.
While decor ideas may vary, one thing all homes have in
common is the presence of dust. Depending on the steps
homeowners take, dust can become a nuisance. But it is possible
to keep it at bay.
Dust is made of just about everything in a persons environment.
Inside the home dust can contain particles of pet dander, skin
cells, upholstery fibers, dirt, mold, lichen, bits of wood, insect
parts, and many other things. What can be particularly unsavory
about dust is its attraction of dust mites, very small parasites that
feed on items in the dust, primarily shed human skin cells. Its
generally the dust mites that cause dust allergies and not the dust
itself.
It can seem like eliminating dust is a losing battle. It is
impossible to get rid of dust completely. But there are ways to
greatly reduce its presence in the home.
* Use heavy-duty door mats in front of doors used to enter and
exit the house. This will trap extra particles tracked in on shoes.
Also, take off shoes when entering the home.
* Upgrade filters in an HVAC system to better filter air
circulated through the system. Check with a service person for
the highest-rated filter that will be compatible with the furnace.
* Reduce the amount of knick-knacks that are on display. These
tend to collect dust and can make cleaning challenging.
* Keep the humidity in the home to about 50 percent. This will
reduce static electricity, which can make it harder to clean dust
from surfaces.
* Use an air purifier in frequently used rooms.
* Seal air leaks that can be a source of extra dust throughout the
home.

(MS) -- There are numerous, simple projects at homeowners
fingertips that can conserve energy in a home and keep money
in the bank. Although windows, doors and siding are the
biggest opportunities to conserve energy and reduce costs, not
every project has to be a major one. When it comes to
improving energy efficiency, every little bit helps. Using the
right products helps to ensure that projects are done correctly
and withstand the test of time. Below are a few easy weekend
projects to get any house ready for the winter.
Garage doors are usually the single largest entry point into a
home and are rarely insulated, leaving a large area where air can
seep in. Rubber thresholds, found at any hardware store, can be
easily and quickly installed underneath the garage door to help
keep the cold at bay. Since most garage doors are aluminum, it is
best to use a two-part epoxy like Gorilla Epoxy to secure these
two different materials together. Epoxy fills any surface gaps,
creating a lasting, water-resistant bond. The pressure and weight
of the door then helps seal the garage when the door is closed. A
similar type of seal can be made with a rubber gasket on exterior
doors as well. By creating a tighter seal on this entry door, cold
air is prevented from getting in and the warm air from getting
out.
When the weather dips below freezing, there is a good chance
that copper pipes will freeze. This is a potentially messy and
costly issue that can be easily prevented. While it might be harder
to get to the pipes behind the walls, exposed pipes in the
basement can be wrapped without difficulty. Flexible foam with a
split-sleeve, purchased from any hardware store, will slip right
over the pipes and can be easily secured with Gorilla Tape. This
heavy duty tape contains twice the adhesive as most duct tapes
and outperforms standard duct tape in these tough situations.
Either wrap tape around the insulating foam or run the entire
length to seal the seam. Even areas where freezing does not pose
a threat can benefit by keeping the pipes a more consistent
temperature, and preventing costly drywall leaks caused by pipe
condensation.
Attics, even when insulated, are a major source of lost heat.
However, most homeowners forget to complete their insulation
project by insulating the access door to the attic. For this
project, it is best to use rigid foam insulation with a radiant
barrier. Cut the insulation board to the doors dimensions. (It is
best to cut the piece a tad smaller than the doors exact size to
ensure that it does not interfere with hinges or where the door
seats into place.) Once cut, affix the insulation board using
polyurethane glue. Gorilla Glue is one of the only adhesives
that can glue foam to a wood or metal attic door without
melting the foam. Also, remember to wet one surface prior to
gluing and clamp the project by weighting it down with some
heavy items. This polyurethane glue expands into the surface of
the insulation and creates a tight bond ensuring the insulation
will stay in place for the life of the home.
All of these winterizing projects are easy, quick, and can be
completed within a weekend. Armed with a few supplies from
the local hardware store, energy and heat savings are just a few
moments away.
