Examples for Forced Harmonic
Response of a SDOF System
2021
Learning Objectives
• Make able to solve problems related to forced harmonic
response of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system.
Example 6.9
During a vibration test under harmonic excitation, it was noted
that the amplitude of vibration at resonance was exactly 1.5
times the amplitude at an excitation frequency 25 % greater
than resonance. Determine the damping ratio of the system.

Example 6.10
A spring-mass-damper system consists of a machine of mass of
100 kg, a spring with a stiffness of 300 kN/m and damping
constant of 1 kN.s/m. It is excited by an external harmonic
force of magnitude 450 N. For what excitation frequencies will
the steady state amplitude of the machine be less than 1.8 mm?

Example 6.11
A 500 kg machine with a rotating unbalance of 0.5 kg.m is
placed on an elastic foundation of stiffness 1 MN/m, for what
speed will the steady state amplitude of the machine be less than
2 mm? Assume that the damping effect is negligible.

Example 6.12
A rotating machine of mass 80 kg operates at 750 rpm.
Determine the equivalent stiffness and damping ratio of an
isolator if when it passes through the resonance the
transmissibility ratio should not exceed 2.4 and 85 percent
isolation should be provided at the operating speed.

Example 6.13
A vibrometer indicates 2 percent error in measurement and its
natural frequency is 5 Hz. If the lowest frequency that can be
measured is 30 Hz, determine the value of damping ratio.
