2 | 2024 DIRECTIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS

PART A: PREPARING TO APPLY

MATRICULATION AND THE NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NSC)

“Matriculation” means you have met the legal minimum admission requirement for degree or diploma study.
This means that:
• your NSC has been endorsed by UMALUSI* to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to bachelors
degree (or if applying for a diploma, the minimum requirements for admission to diploma study) at a South African university, or
• your Senior Certificate has been endorsed by UMALUSI to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to
degree study in a South African university; or
• you have a certificate of complete exemption from matriculation requirements, issued by the Matriculation Board.

We set additional admission requirements over and above the minimum legal eligibility requirement that you must meet for your programme
of study. These are set out in our Undergraduate Prospectus.

CONDITIONAL MATRICULATION EXEMPTION

Although we do not usually accept applicants with certificates of Conditional Exemption, we will give consideration to applicants who
qualify for Conditional Exemption.
These certificates can be granted to:
• South Africans on the grounds of mature age, subject to minimum requirements as set by the Matriculation Board
• applicants who have written a school-leaving examination other than the SA Senior Certificate
• immigrants
• applicants who have obtained certain post-secondary school qualifications

Where we offer you a study place, and you intend to register at UCT in 2024, it is your responsibility to apply for the issue of the necessary
Conditional Exemption certificate. This is done by submitting the appropriate application form, documents and fee to UCT at registration.
UCT then forwards this to the Matriculation Board. You will be advised by the relevant faculty office.

ELIGIBILITY FOR MATRICULATION EXEMPTION FOR HOLDERS OF FOREIGN

QUALIFICATIONS
If you have a school-leaving certificate from an international or foreign examining authority, you must consult the Matriculation Board to
establish if you are eligible for matriculation exemption:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR
UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
Familiarise yourself with our admission criteria. Should you hold a
school-leaving certificate for which admission criteria are not specified
in the 2024 Undergraduate Prospectus, your application will be consid-
ered individually, taking into account your school curriculum, academic
performance and National Benchmark Test results, where appropriate.

The 2024 Undergraduate Prospectus gives details of our admission

requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee
admission. Places are limited for reasons of capacity and this could
mean that applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements
do not receive an offer of a study place.

NATIONAL BENCHMARK TESTS (NBTs)

Most undergraduate applicants who normally reside, or have com-
pleted/are completing schooling, in South Africa must write the NBTs.
Applicants applying for admission to a programme only in the Faculty
of Engineering & the Built Environment are not required to write the
NBTs. Applicants applying for admission to a programme in the Facul-
ty of Health Sciences must write the NBTs, wherever they may reside.

You must:
• register for the NBTs before you apply online, or before you sumit
a paper application form,
• include your NBT registration number in your application;
• have written the NBTs by 15 October 2023 for all faculties; except
Health Sciences which requires you to write by 31 July 2023 if you
wish to be considered for a conditional offer (those who write
after this date will be assessed when the final 2023 National Senior
Certificate (NSC) results are released in January 2024).
For information about which tests are required for your chosen
programme of study, consult the Undergraduate Prospectus.

In 2023, the NBTs will be written both online and as pencil-and-paper

tests. Please go to www.nbt.ac.za to register for the NBTs.

For information on the NBTs, visit www.nbt.ac.za,

call 021 650 3523, email nbt@uct.ac.za, or write to:

WHEN TO WRITE NATIONAL BENCHMARK TESTS

We strongly encourage you to write the NBTs as early as possible. If you
wish to be considered for a conditional offer by the Faculty of Health
Sciences, you must write the NBTs by 31 July 2023. If you write the
NBTs after 31 July, you will only be considered for an offer in early 2024
after your final examination results are received. The final date to write
the NBTs for admission to UCT is 15 October 2023. You do not need
to submit your NBT results to UCT. We will receive these directly from
the NBT Offices.

4 | 2024 DIRECTIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS

In 2023, the NBTs may be written both online and as pencil-and-paper tests. Please consult the testing programme at nbt.ac.za in order
to select your date as part of your registration.

REWRITING THE NBTs

You may attempt the NBTs at most twice in one test cycle. Should you elect to do so, the second sitting must be no later than the due
dates above. We use the better results of each domain / test.

FOR APPLICANTS WHO PREVIOUSLY WROTE THE NBTs

NBT results are only valid for two years prior to the year of application; so if you wrote the NBTs in 2020 or 2021, the results remain valid,
but you may choose to rewrite in 2023. If you wrote the NBTs prior to 2020, these results are no longer valid.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE NBTs

You may register online or by telephone for the NBTs.
1. Register online at www.nbt.ac.za. After reading the general information and the FAQs, select the ‘‘Book a test” link and follow all
instructions. Note that you will need your SA identity number or a foreign passport number in order to register. If you encounter
problems during the registration process, call 021 650 3523 or send an email to nbt@uct.ac.za for assistance. The NBT helpdesk is
staffed from 08:00 to 16:00 weekdays and from 07:00 to 10:00 on national test days.
2. If you do not have access to the internet, call 021 650 3523 for registration assistance at the times above.
3. There is a fee for the NBTs.

YOUR COMPREHENSIVE APPLICATION TO UCT
Your UCT application is a single process, which incorporates:
1. your application for admission to an academic programme of study and
2. your application for student accommodation (optional)

Your application for student financial aid (optional) must be submitted directly to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) at
www.nsfas.org.za.

Dates by which to apply

Please apply as early as possible. Do not wait until the closing date, or until you have received your interim school-leaving results. Early
application will increase your chances of receiving an early offer of admission and accommodation. All undergraduate applications close
on 31 July 2023. No late applications are accepted.

Applications for admission

Your application for admission to an academic programme is managed by the relevant faculty..

You may apply for two programmes of study, and your applications to your two choices are considered simultaneously. You may change one
or both choices on or before 31 August 2023 by writing to the Admissions Office at admissions-ug@uct.ac.za.

For applicants currently at school:

If you are currently at school, you must include all of your latest results with your application. These include final grade 11 and interim
grade 12 results, which must be submitted online (or include a certified copy of your final report, should you be applying on paper).

For applicants currently at another tertiary institution:

If you are currently studying at another institution, you must include your latest transcript with your application. Do this by uploading a
certified electronic copy of the transcript when applying online (or include a certified paper copy of your transcript, should you be applying
on paper). Ensure that you include a sworn translation of your transcript where it is not in English. If you fail to disclose that you are
studying at another institution, your application will be cancelled.

For applicants who have already left school, and who may or may not have studied at a tertiary institution in the past:
Please ensure that you include with your application a certified paper copy of your final results: either school results or your latest academic
transcript. If you fail to disclose that you have studied at another institution, your application will be cancelled.

APPLICATIONS FOR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

Applications for student accommodation must be received by 31 July 2023. The application is part of the academic application process,
whether on paper or online. We have a three-tier residence system that provides different levels of services, governance and management
for students.
• First-tier residences provide accommodation for undergraduate students who are usually under the age of 21. These residences provide
students with up to three meals a day in a dining hall.
• Second-tier catering residences provide accommodation for undergraduate students who are usually 21 years or older, for those who
are in their third year of study, and for postgraduate students.
• Second-tier self-catering residences and flats are usually reserved for postgraduate students, or students who are over 21 or in their
third year of study. No food services are provided.

2024 DIRECTIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS | 7

2. BA (FA) portfolio requirements
Undergraduate Portfolios are due on or before the 31 August 2023 for study in the year 2024.

Before submitting your portfolio, please ensure that you also submit your UCT application before 31 July 2023.Portfolios will not be
considered without a formal application to the university.

If applying for admission to BA(FA), applicants must submit the following items combined in a single PDF file, and not exceeding 20MB file
size, via email to admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za:
• 4 original drawings
• A portfolio of 10 recent works
• A statement of motivation of 250-500 words
• BAFA Form - downloadable under the Downloads page on the Michaelis website (www.michaelis.uct.ac.za).
4 Original drawings (submitted digitally)
You are required to produce 4 original, monochromatic drawings on paper in at least two different media such as pencil, charcoal, pen
or brush. These drawings must be submitted digitally with the rest of the portfolio. These drawings must be from life and NOT from
photographs or be traced, and must include the following:
• Self portrait
• Still life
• Figure or animal study
• Architectural or landscape study

In this section of the portfolio, we are looking particularly at observational skills, as these skills are crucial for the foundational phase of the
degree. Through these drawings you are demonstrating to the portfolio committee that you have developed the skills required to draw accurately
from life. We are looking for an indication that you have the capacity to work with the traditional elements of image creation - composition,
proportion, perspective, line, mark, tone and shape. We kindly request that you do not deviate from this list of 4 required drawings.

Portfolio of additional works (submitted digitally)

The portfolio must include no more than 10 individual works in a range of media including colour (10 works and an optional 3 images
of details). Each artwork must be labelled in the following format: Number Image; Surname; Title; Date of production; Size (cm); media.

The following criteria will be taken into account when assessing this section of the portfolio:
• Creative thinking
• Observational skills
• Experimentation

This work including your name, title of each work and medium used must be submitted in a single PDF file not exceeding 20MB file
size. Please check that your PDF is accessible and is formatted to be read on all computers (iOS and Windows) BEFORE submitting it.
Title your PDF in the following format: Name Surname - Online Application number - Date. When submitting your portfolio, please use
the following subject format: Portfolio Submission – Surname – year of application. If you are unable to submit a digital portfolio, please
contact admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za.

We kindly request that you take the time to create a single PDF, as it is the simplest way to ensure that your application is viewable by the
committee in the same manner it appears on your screen. Submitting a series of images without a coherent structure, or alternative text
formats that do not anchor the images in place, complicates the reviewing process. There are a wide range of online and offline methods
to create a PDF, we encourage you to find one that suits your digital environment.

If your portfolio cannot be reduced in size, you may use Google Drive, and email the link to admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za. Please ensure
that your settings always allow access to the drive.

If your portfolio includes any video submissions, you may use YouTube, and email the link and any passwords needed to access it to
admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za.

Need assistance setting up your portfolio?

To download a PDF on how to take photographs for your portfolio,
and for tips on presenting work online, go to http:/www.michaelis.uct.ac.za/downloads-1.
All portfolios must be sent to: admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za.

Transferring students
Applicants intending to transfer into the BA(FA) degree must submit a letter of motivation and a portfolio of work which includes work
they have done at their current institution. The work must show evidence of advanced technical skill on par with the level expected of
students in the year the applicant wishes to transfer into. The motivation letter must include an indication of the applicant’s intended
major/s. Transferring applicants must also submit their latest transcripts and course outlines/handbooks.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
If you are an international applicant, visit the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) website - international.uct.ac.za

UCT’s International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) supports international students and researchers from over 100 countries who
enroll for taught courses and undertake to complete their research at UCT. IAPO provides letters which support visa applications for study
and research at UCT; advise on immigration-related requirements and advocate for student visa challenges. IAPO advises applicants on the
international tuition and housing fees; the costs of living in Cape Town; and the support services available at UCT to help students settle in.
Before any international student can be registered at UCT, their immigration-related documents (passport, visa and medical aid) and tuition
fee payments are verified, captured and uploaded to the students’ record system, through a process called pre-registration. International
students must complete pre-registration before proceeding to academic registration and course enrolment. In addition, IAPO co-ordinates
programmes and events which facilitate student integration into our diverse student community, and manages international partnerships
and donor funded programmes, which enables international student mobility.

Study Visas

In terms of the Immigration Act No. 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not
have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University. It is
important that your visa is endorsed specifically for study at UCT 1.

If you hold a refugee or asylum seeker status issued by the South African Government you are exempt from needing a study visa to attend
the University however, you are required to produce a valid refugee or asylum seeker permit.

The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of Home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa,
nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place, please apply immediately for
a study visa. Your application must be made to the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your home country. This
procedure could take from 8 to 12 weeks or longer to be processed, so apply without delay. The application form BI-1738, duly completed,
must be accompanied by the following:

(a) valid passport

(b) a fee (current details are available from the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission)
(c) an official letter from UCT confirming provisional or firm acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course
(d) letter of undertaking from UCT in support of the study visa application 2
(e) in the case of a person under the age of 21 years:
(i) the particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as that learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from that
intended guardian; and
(ii) proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole
custody in the latter case
(f) a police clearance certificate 3
(g) affidavit confirming conditions of existing visa have been upheld for those renewing a previous study visa for South Africa
(h) medical and radiological reports
(i) documents relating to marital status if applicable
(j) a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area

1
If you are residing in South Africa at the time of your application for undergraduate study at UCT, ensure that your visa is endorsed for study at UCT and renewed to cover the duration of your
postgraduate programme. Visa renewals and corrections to visa conditions can be facilitated through the VFS Global Office in Cape Town.
2
The letter of undertaking will be sent by email within 3 working days of having received provisional or firm acceptance for a study place. This letter will be sent to the email address provided
upon submission of your application for admission.
3
The police clearance certificate can be applied for directly at the VFS Global Office, upon making application for the visa renewal.
4
The duration of your medical aid cover must match the duration or your programme; renewed annually for each year of study.

2024 DIRECTIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS | 9

(k) in the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written
undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant
(l) proof of medical cover from a South African medical aid scheme, registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act,
1998 (Act No. 131 of 1998). The duration of your medical aid cover must align with the duration of your study offer;
renewed annually for each year of study and be valid for the full year, ending on 31 December (for full degree programmes).
(m) proof of sufficient financial means
(n) payment of a deposit: Provided that such deposit shall be refunded to the depositor after the final departure of the applicant or after
a permit contemplated in section 25 of the Act has been issued to the applicant: Provided further that the payment of the deposit may
be effected by means of a bank guaranteed cheque or credit card at places where such facility exists.
(o) in the case of students from Africa, the payment of the deposit shall not be required: Provided that the Government of the relevant
African country submits a written undertaking to pay all costs relating to the deportation of the student, should this become necessary.
(p) other requirements as may be prescribed by the Consulate/Embassy

We recommend that you contact the nearest South African Consulate/Embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to find out
exactly what documents are needed, because requirements may change. It is very important that your study visa is valid for studies at the
University of Cape Town. If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your study visa needs
to be changed for studies at the University of Cape Town.

You will not be able to register unless you are in possession of a valid study visa and valid medical aid cover from a South African medical aid
scheme for the entire academic year (i.e. ending on 31 December 4 for full degree programmes) and renewed annually for each year of study.
Before you can be registered for your programme the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) will verify, capture and upload your
immigration-related documents (passport, visa and medical aid) and tuition fee payment information to your student record. This process
is called pre-registration. Only once you are successfully pre-registered can you proceed to register for your programme.

f you hold a refugee or asylum seeker status approved by the South African Government, you will be required to produce a valid refugee
or asylum seeker permit for pre-registration, to receive immigration clearance to register for courses.
Queries about study visas should be directed to:

1. For applications submitted in your home country, the South African embassy or high commission
or

MONITORING YOUR APPLICATION STATUS

We will publish your application status online. We will update this as we make decisions during the process. Please regularly monitor your
application status online at http://studentsonline.uct.ac.za (at the Student Centre in Student Self Service).
One of the following statuses may apply:

• Decision Deferred: this means that, we do not have enough information to make you an offer of admission. In order to make you
an offer of admission, we may await your NBT results, improved school examination results, predicted scores, etc. A deferred decision
does not mean that your application is unsuccessful.
• Conditional Offer 1 : this means that we are offering you a place with conditions, which are included in the offer letter that you will
receive from us. Your offer of a place is confirmed only when you meet these conditions. You need to establish the final status before
arriving at UCT for registration in 2024.
• Firm Offer: this means that you are offered a place without conditions.
• Waitlisted: this means that a final decision on your application will be taken when we have further information about the entire pool
of applicants. This additional information will allow us to assess your application in relation to others.
• Denied: your application is unsuccessful.

A typical application will have various statuses throughout the application cycle. It is important to monitor your application status.

CONCURRENT OFFERS OF ADMISSION

It is possible to hold offers of admission for both of your choices. If, in January 2024 or before, you are made two firm offers of admission,
we will ask you to go online to select one of the programmes. Should you not make the appropriate selection by the due date, we will
retain the offer for your first choice, and withdraw your offer from your second choice.

1
Note for international students only. Once you have received a conditional or firm study place you will automatically be issued with a letter of undertaking from the International Academic
Programmes Office (IAPO), in support of your study visa application. The letter of undertaking will be sent to the email address recorded on your application for admission. This letter will be
sent within 3 working days of receiving your conditional or firm study place. See pages 9-10 for study visa information.

PART C:
SUBMITTING A PAPER APPLICATION

The application booklet consists of various sections and the sections that follow guide you through the process. You will find
that you need codes to complete the application form. These codes are found starting on page 16 of this
booklet. The sections of the application form are:

Section A: PERSONAL DETAILS

Complete all the fields in this section. If you applied to UCT before, supply your applicant number. Omissions and inaccuracies will
delay your application. If you are a South African citizen or permanent resident you must state your South African identity number.

We are committed to addressing the needs of students with disabilities, and will provide facilities, where we can. To make sure
that we can plan services to accommodate your specific disability, please complete the relevant part of this section. Please note
that completion of this part of Section A is voluntary, and that any information you give will not prejudice your application for
an academic place, but if your disability is such that you will require accommodations of any kind, we strongly advise disclosure.
Contact our Disability Service well in advance of applying to UCT, and if possible visit the University to assess the suitability of
your programme, the academic department and the facilities available.

Please remember to submit a copy of your South African identity document/card or passport.

Section B: NBT NUMBER

You must submit your NBT number if appropriate. If you wrote the NBTs in 2020 or 2021 these results remain valid. Submit your
registration number and the year that you took the test, unless you wish to take the test(s) again, in which case you should re-
register online.

Section C: PROGRAMMES OF STUDY FOR WHICH YOU ARE APPLYING

Please indicate your first and second choice of degree, diploma or certificate. You are not required to make more than one
choice, but it is advisable to do so. Do not apply for admission to a programme for which you are not eligible. Give careful
attention to your choices as alternatives may not be available at a later stage in the application cycle. Table A in this document
lists the undergraduate degree, diploma and certificate programmes we offer. Admission criteria and other details are given in
the 2023 Undergraduate Prospectus.

Submit a second academic plan code only if you are applying for admission to a programme in the Science Faculty.
