Dear Applicant
Thank you for your interest in studying at the University of Cape Town. I am delighted that you
are considering an application for admission to one of our many undergraduate programmes. As
an applicant, please use our Undergraduate Prospectus as a source of valuable information about
our academic programmes and their admission criteria, as well as a wide range of non-academic
support services available to our students.
This guide will help you to apply. After you apply, we will send you your applicant number. Please
quote this number in all subsequent communication. Do not hesitate to contact us should you
need further information. (Where you are unable to apply online you should contact us for paper
application forms.)
We look forward to receiving your application and hope to welcome you to UCT in 2024.
Gcinumzi Haduse
Director of Admissions
“Matriculation” means you have met the legal minimum admission requirement for degree or diploma study.
This means that:
• your NSC has been endorsed by UMALUSI* to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to bachelors
degree (or if applying for a diploma, the minimum requirements for admission to diploma study) at a South African university, or
• your Senior Certificate has been endorsed by UMALUSI to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to
degree study in a South African university; or
• you have a certificate of complete exemption from matriculation requirements, issued by the Matriculation Board.
We set additional admission requirements over and above the minimum legal eligibility requirement that you must meet for your programme
of study. These are set out in our Undergraduate Prospectus.
Where we offer you a study place, and you intend to register at UCT in 2024, it is your responsibility to apply for the issue of the necessary
Conditional Exemption certificate. This is done by submitting the appropriate application form, documents and fee to UCT at registration.
UCT then forwards this to the Matriculation Board. You will be advised by the relevant faculty office.
*UMALUSI sets and monitors standards for general and further education and training in South Africa.
You must:
• register for the NBTs before you apply online, or before you sumit
a paper application form,
• include your NBT registration number in your application;
• have written the NBTs by 15 October 2023 for all faculties; except
Health Sciences which requires you to write by 31 July 2023 if you
wish to be considered for a conditional offer (those who write
after this date will be assessed when the final 2023 National Senior
Certificate (NSC) results are released in January 2024).
For information about which tests are required for your chosen
programme of study, consult the Undergraduate Prospectus.
For more information about the TOEFL (including information on how to register for the tests
and dates when tests are held), use one of the following contacts:
Email: toefl@ets.org
Website: www.toefl.org
Information on TOEFL is also available from the American Embassy or Consulate in your country.
Information about the IELTS may be obtained from the British Council at
the British Embassy or Consulate in your country.
Information on IELTS is also available from the British Council, South Africa:
Tel: +27 11 560 9300
Email: ssa.enquiries@britishcouncil.org
Website: www.britishcouncil.org.za/exam/ielts
If you are writing and English proficiency test you must ensure that the results are submitted to the Admissions Office by
1 October 2023.
The NBTs are offered by the Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement (CETAP) and can be arranged to be taken anywhere
in the world (visit www.nbt.ac.za for details). For graduate applicants, this is 68% (proficient) or above on the Graduate Academic Literacy
(G-AL) and 70% (proficient) or above on the Graduate Quantitative (G-QL) Tests, unless otherwise stipulated.
Your application for student financial aid (optional) must be submitted directly to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) at
www.nsfas.org.za.
Please apply as early as possible. Do not wait until the closing date, or until you have received your interim school-leaving results. Early
application will increase your chances of receiving an early offer of admission and accommodation. All undergraduate applications close
on 31 July 2023. No late applications are accepted.
Your application for admission to an academic programme is managed by the relevant faculty..
You may apply for two programmes of study, and your applications to your two choices are considered simultaneously. You may change one
or both choices on or before 31 August 2023 by writing to the Admissions Office at admissions-ug@uct.ac.za.
For applicants who have already left school, and who may or may not have studied at a tertiary institution in the past:
Please ensure that you include with your application a certified paper copy of your final results: either school results or your latest academic
transcript. If you fail to disclose that you have studied at another institution, your application will be cancelled.
Only students applying for full-time study are considered for UCT accommodation.
Only South African citizens and South African permanent residents applying for full time study for an approved, funded, programme are
eligible to apply for financial assistance.
B. DESIGN
1. Make a design for a pattern, which could be used – for example – in the printing of fabric. The pattern should be based on
the abstraction, repetition and /or manipulation of the manufactured object you selected for drawing exercise A1. Use A4
paper and any technique. Include all your rough work.
2. Design and make a freestanding light/lamp. Think about the effect of your lamp/light in creating light and shadow. Explain
your thought processes about light and shadow and what inspired the light. Include photographs of you in the process of
designing and making the lamp. Include photographs of the finished product illustrating the light/lamp when it is lit up.
Include all your rough work and design drawings. Please DO NOT send any original models or built lamps. You may use
any material(s).
3. Design a poster advertising significant event, exhibition or conference that reflects what you consider socially relevant.
Carefully judge the information that needs to be communicated as well as desired visual impact that you want to achieve.
The poster must be on A3 paper (twice the size of this sheet- 420 x 297mm). Use any technique. Include your rough work.
4. Using drawings only (i.e no words) and any graphic technique you like, draw for a friend how to go on a journey from your
house to your favourite local place. Use one sheet of A4 paper for this. Include some of your rough sketches/ work with
each exercise.
C. MOTIVATION
Include a one-page written motivation in your portfolio giving reasons for wanting to study in this programme.
SUPPLEMENTARY WORK
You may also submit copies or photographs of any other creative work such as drawings, sketches, paintings, or made objects (e.g.
ceramics, clothing, carpentry, jewellery, wirework, beadwork, etc.). Please do not submit copies of more than six such items. Do not
submit any physical objects or bulky framed artwork.
PLEASE NOTE
Final deadline for all applications to admissions is the 31st July 2023
Final submission of the portfolio is the 31st July 2023. Late applications will not be considered.
Email the portfolio as one pdf file to Nanette.pickover@uct.ac.za if the file is too large to email please use an app
https://WeTransfer.com which is a free service.
Before submitting your portfolio, please ensure that you also submit your UCT application before 31 July 2023.Portfolios will not be
considered without a formal application to the university.
If applying for admission to BA(FA), applicants must submit the following items combined in a single PDF file, and not exceeding 20MB file
size, via email to admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za:
• 4 original drawings
• A portfolio of 10 recent works
• A statement of motivation of 250-500 words
• BAFA Form - downloadable under the Downloads page on the Michaelis website (www.michaelis.uct.ac.za).
4 Original drawings (submitted digitally)
You are required to produce 4 original, monochromatic drawings on paper in at least two different media such as pencil, charcoal, pen
or brush. These drawings must be submitted digitally with the rest of the portfolio. These drawings must be from life and NOT from
photographs or be traced, and must include the following:
• Self portrait
• Still life
• Figure or animal study
• Architectural or landscape study
In this section of the portfolio, we are looking particularly at observational skills, as these skills are crucial for the foundational phase of the
degree. Through these drawings you are demonstrating to the portfolio committee that you have developed the skills required to draw accurately
from life. We are looking for an indication that you have the capacity to work with the traditional elements of image creation - composition,
proportion, perspective, line, mark, tone and shape. We kindly request that you do not deviate from this list of 4 required drawings.
The following criteria will be taken into account when assessing this section of the portfolio:
• Creative thinking
• Observational skills
• Experimentation
This work including your name, title of each work and medium used must be submitted in a single PDF file not exceeding 20MB file
size. Please check that your PDF is accessible and is formatted to be read on all computers (iOS and Windows) BEFORE submitting it.
Title your PDF in the following format: Name Surname - Online Application number - Date. When submitting your portfolio, please use
the following subject format: Portfolio Submission – Surname – year of application. If you are unable to submit a digital portfolio, please
contact admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za.
We kindly request that you take the time to create a single PDF, as it is the simplest way to ensure that your application is viewable by the
committee in the same manner it appears on your screen. Submitting a series of images without a coherent structure, or alternative text
formats that do not anchor the images in place, complicates the reviewing process. There are a wide range of online and offline methods
to create a PDF, we encourage you to find one that suits your digital environment.
If your portfolio cannot be reduced in size, you may use Google Drive, and email the link to admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za. Please ensure
that your settings always allow access to the drive.
If your portfolio includes any video submissions, you may use YouTube, and email the link and any passwords needed to access it to
admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za.
Transferring students
Applicants intending to transfer into the BA(FA) degree must submit a letter of motivation and a portfolio of work which includes work
they have done at their current institution. The work must show evidence of advanced technical skill on par with the level expected of
students in the year the applicant wishes to transfer into. The motivation letter must include an indication of the applicant’s intended
major/s. Transferring applicants must also submit their latest transcripts and course outlines/handbooks.
UCT’s International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) supports international students and researchers from over 100 countries who
enroll for taught courses and undertake to complete their research at UCT. IAPO provides letters which support visa applications for study
and research at UCT; advise on immigration-related requirements and advocate for student visa challenges. IAPO advises applicants on the
international tuition and housing fees; the costs of living in Cape Town; and the support services available at UCT to help students settle in.
Before any international student can be registered at UCT, their immigration-related documents (passport, visa and medical aid) and tuition
fee payments are verified, captured and uploaded to the students’ record system, through a process called pre-registration. International
students must complete pre-registration before proceeding to academic registration and course enrolment. In addition, IAPO co-ordinates
programmes and events which facilitate student integration into our diverse student community, and manages international partnerships
and donor funded programmes, which enables international student mobility.
Study Visas
In terms of the Immigration Act No. 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not
have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University. It is
important that your visa is endorsed specifically for study at UCT 1.
If you hold a refugee or asylum seeker status issued by the South African Government you are exempt from needing a study visa to attend
the University however, you are required to produce a valid refugee or asylum seeker permit.
The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of Home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa,
nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place, please apply immediately for
a study visa. Your application must be made to the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your home country. This
procedure could take from 8 to 12 weeks or longer to be processed, so apply without delay. The application form BI-1738, duly completed,
must be accompanied by the following:
1
If you are residing in South Africa at the time of your application for undergraduate study at UCT, ensure that your visa is endorsed for study at UCT and renewed to cover the duration of your
postgraduate programme. Visa renewals and corrections to visa conditions can be facilitated through the VFS Global Office in Cape Town.
2
The letter of undertaking will be sent by email within 3 working days of having received provisional or firm acceptance for a study place. This letter will be sent to the email address provided
upon submission of your application for admission.
3
The police clearance certificate can be applied for directly at the VFS Global Office, upon making application for the visa renewal.
4
The duration of your medical aid cover must match the duration or your programme; renewed annually for each year of study.
We recommend that you contact the nearest South African Consulate/Embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to find out
exactly what documents are needed, because requirements may change. It is very important that your study visa is valid for studies at the
University of Cape Town. If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your study visa needs
to be changed for studies at the University of Cape Town.
You will not be able to register unless you are in possession of a valid study visa and valid medical aid cover from a South African medical aid
scheme for the entire academic year (i.e. ending on 31 December 4 for full degree programmes) and renewed annually for each year of study.
Before you can be registered for your programme the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) will verify, capture and upload your
immigration-related documents (passport, visa and medical aid) and tuition fee payment information to your student record. This process
is called pre-registration. Only once you are successfully pre-registered can you proceed to register for your programme.
f you hold a refugee or asylum seeker status approved by the South African Government, you will be required to produce a valid refugee
or asylum seeker permit for pre-registration, to receive immigration clearance to register for courses.
Queries about study visas should be directed to:
1. For applications submitted in your home country, the South African embassy or high commission
or
2. if the application is submitted within South Africa,

provide proof of payment to IAPO. Once your fee payment is verified and captured you will be fee-cleared through a process call pre-
registration. Once pre-registration is completed, you can proceed with registration of courses.

receive from us. Your offer of a place is confirmed only when you meet these conditions. You need to establish the final status before
arriving at UCT for registration in 2024.
