CO overcurrent relays are classified into three groups which

differ as to the time characteristic curves of the overcurrent

elements used. When combined with an indicating1 instantaneous

trip element, " I " is suffixed to the type designation, making a

total of 6 types.

Type CO-15 (and-15*) has inverse delay for the protection of

motors. Type CO-16 (and-l6l) is a two-second relay with inverse

delay characteristics. CO-18 (and-181) relays have an very inverse

delay characteristic and are standard low burden relays.

CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION

The Type CO overcurrent relay consists.of an over-current element

(CO) and an indicating contactor switch(lCS).

At the extreme front right of the relay is the indicaring

contactor switch and the overcurrent element, mounted on an

aluminum frame. Vhen an indicating instantaneous trip unit is

provided, it is mounted to the left. The tap plate is at the

top, under it the contacting section, and at the bottom the

disk.

A n electromagnetic element is attached to the back of the

frame.

The relay is housed in a R. case (see Fig. 7)«

OVERCURRENT ELEMENT

The overcurrent element of the CO relay is of the induction .

type, comprising an E core and a spiral disk. To form the

overcurrent element, the middle leg of the E core is provided

vith a tapped coil, and the right and left legs are wound with

suitable lagging coils. The action of these coils imparts a

torque to the disk.

Vhen the current exceeds a predetermined value and the

torque of the disk overcomes the counter-torque of the coil

spring, the disk rotates to close the contacts. The time

required to close the contacts is controlled by the strength of

a permanent magnet.

BTE6-01100
INDICATING CONTACTOR SWITCH (iCS)

The ICS is a clapper-type DC magnetic relay. When a current

Qf predetermined value flows in the. coil, an armature is

attracted to a magnetic pole, contacts are closed, and the in-

dicator is dropped. The indicator can be reset by pushing up _

a resetting rod from the outside of the cover. Be careful not

to touch the mechanism vhile the indicator is still in the up

position, otherwise the spring may be damaged.

The ICS has a standard coil of double rating, 0 . 1 A / 1A.

The ICS is normally shipped with the higher tap connected, but

the coil appropriate to the application may be selected by

means of terminals at the lower right.

The ICS operates on any circuit if current above a predeter-

mined value flows in it, but when the duration of current flow

is very short, sufficient current will be assured by applying

approximately 200$ of the rating.

Vhen two or more relays operate simultaneously to trip the

same circuit breaker or energize aa auxiliary relay, make sure

enough current flows that all the indicators will drop.

The maximum current flow for the high current tap may be

taken as 15A. ,'

OVERCURGENT ELEMENT

The overcurrent element is set by the use of taps and a time

dial. Vhen selective operation is desired vith a prestage or

following-stage relay, it is recommended to allow a coordinating

time of 0.3 seconds plus breaker time.

Since the CT circuit must not open when changing taps, be

sure either to take out the interior assembly first, or to

change taps after short-circuiting the assembly by opening the

test switches on terminals 7 and 8 in Fig. 5f °r to screw

the spare tap screw into the tap which is to be used, and then

loosen and disconnect the other tap. The tap carries the

relay's operating current, and must therefore be carefully and

solidly seated so that the CT circuit is not opened and the

contact does not heat up.

INDICATING CONTACTOR SWITCH

The appropriate coil must be selected, but apart from this, no

special settings are needed.

It is standard practice to set the relay serai-flush into a stee.

panel.

The relay must be mounted vertically at a point vhere

vibration is slight and there is no strong magnetic field.

INSPECTION AND TESTING

All relays are fully factory-tested before shipment, but in case

any change should occur in their performance during transporta-

tion, it is desirable on delivery not only to check for external

damage but also to test the principal operation characteristics

again.

OVERGURRENT ELEMENT

1. Manual Inspection

After mounting the relay vertically, take off the cover

and remove any paper inserted between the disk and the

magnet. As the time adjustment dial has been set to zero

IP
to prevent movement in transit, turn it to positioiv.checking

carefully 'that the disk moves smoothly to the very 'end.

If it stops midvay or its rotation is not smooth, it may be

.touching something, or the bearings may be defective.

Please inform Mitsubishi immediately.

INDICATING INSTANTANEOUS TRIP (iIT) ELEMENT

The indicating instaneous trip element must be set by applying

current.
*

As this is an AC element, it is unavoidable that the moving

part vibrates near the minimum operation value because the •;

current alternates. . This means that the operation value is

;
not as specific as vith a DC relay. •

The manufacturer's test is conducted with a trip coil

simulated by using a Type MCX auxiliary relay for 110V DC or a

Type MKR trip relay as contact load. The MKR trip relay as

a contact load. The minimum input current operating these

contact loads is taken as the operation value.

Vhen testing and setting is done in the field, connect the

element contact load or similar load and determine empirically

the optimum position of the tap setting screv in line with the

protective purpose of the circuit.

On the scale plate are graduated the relations between the

plug position and the operation value for reference, which will

give approximate positions of the plug.

Construction and operation'
The principle element incorporated in the type MVR series
voltage relay is an induction disc type element which uses
the same type of shading coil type element as that for

type MOC over-current relay.

This element provides the disc with rotating force by the
action of tapped main coil (voltage coil) and shading
coil.

In the type MVR-1 under-voltage relay, when the input

voltage becomes under the tap value, the electromagnetic
rotating force is surpassed by the reversing torque of
the Spiral spring.
By which the disc is rotated to close the contact.
The type MVR-2 over-voltage relay, on the other hand,
if the input voltage exceeds the tap value, the
electromagnetic rotating force surpasses the reversing
force of the spiral spring.
Thereby the disc is rotated to close the contact.

Handling precautions

(1). In setting taps, be sure to screw the tap plug

securely.

(2). Select either one of left or right tap.

CTE3-2301 '%',
JEP 0- I L S 2 9 7
Do not insert more than two tap plugs in a tap.
Otherwise, the voltage circuit can burn the main
coil at the short-circuit relay.

illustrated below:

Power supply input wave

pattern

Wave pattern shaping (1)

Frequency division (2)

Reference clock

Gate output

"- The clock signals are coun ted

(1) The input power (measured input) is taken into the circuit through

a transformer and undergoes wave shaping. (T)

(2) The above further undergoes frequency division to create a square

wave with the width equal to the one cycle of the power supply

frequency. (T) v

(3) The frequency sec by the setting switch is converted to the pulse

number equivalent to one cycle and is set in the internal counter.

(A) The gate to the counter is opened for a time period equivalent to

the pulse width of (T) above to allow the reference clock generated

by the crystal oscillator to decrement the preset counter for a time

period equal to the one cycle of the power supply frequency.

(5) If the decrementation finds that the frequency is in excess of the

set level, the operating timer is started.

(6) If the frequency is kept at a level higher than the set level and the

timer set in (5) above runs out, the output relay and the indicator

1. Introduction

Type IBR1D relay is an induction disc tyre relay having two U-ma.ynets

with shading ring, and is used for the protection of the rotary machines

such as AC generator.

It is the percentage differential relay which sends alarm or breaker

tripping order when a fault occurs inside the rotary machine and the ratio

cf operating and restraining currents flowing through the relay exceeds

10/c, and operates only against the internal fault with high sensitivity.

P-3

Type IBR1F relay is a three unit relay for providing differential

protection for a three-phase generator.

Induction disc unit

On both sides of the disc, the operating and restraining coils wound

round the U-magnets are located. From the relay terminal (5), connection is

made to the left operating coil. From the relay terminal (6) and (7),

connection is made to the right restraining coil. As shown in Fig. 1, let

the currents of the relay terminals (6) and (7) be Ix and 1"2- The restraining

torque is generated by I]_ + Ip. while the operating torque is generated by

!]_ - I2. Damping is given by the permanent magnet mounted to the front.

Target and seal-in unit

The standard target and seal-in unit U E 3 with contacts is located at

the upper left of the relay. 2 standard coils 0.2 and 1 are

available. The coil selection and the tap setting used on the seal-in

element can be determined by the current drawn by the trip coil and trip

circuit resistance.

The operation indicating plate is reset manually by depressing the

reset button located at the lower left of the relay.

4. Operating Principles and Characteristics

Fig.2 a. generator protection scheme in which Type IBR1D relay is

used. Example shows the case where Ii is incoming current of neutral point

side and I2 is outgoing current of bus bar side.

BTE6-00977 Vfg
P-4

Neutral point Generator Bus bar

Fig.2 Generator protection scheme

In the figure, (5), (6) and (7) are the terminal numbers of the relay.

Current Ii-l2 flows through the terminal (5); Ij_ through the terminal @ ;

and Ip through the terminal (7)•

When the generator is in normal operation or in the event of external

fault, I1-I2 = 0, so that no operating torque is produced; only the

restraining torque is generated.

If a fault occurs inside the generator, currents get out of balance. As a

result, the differential current of I]_-l2 flows through the operating coil.

If the differential current exceeds 10/o of through current, the relay

contact is closed and the circuit breaker is tripped to separate the

generator from the system.

The percentage slope of the relay is 1Q2&, considering the difference

of two current transformers characteristics between both sides of the

generator.

The very high sensitivity is obtained by minimum operating current of 0.1A,

and enables to detect the fault of windings near by neutral point.

5
BTE6-00977 /
t-t- 5330237
P-5

The operating formula of the relay is given by the following expression;

441 (l x - I 2 ) 2 - (Ij + I 2 ) 2
^ 4.4

As is evident from the above expression, if incoming current and outgoing

current shown by I and I are illustrated, the ratio characteristic

curve such as shown in Fig.3 is obtained. In Fig. 3, assume that when

1^1 , I. and I ? denote incoming and outgoing currents respectively. When

I.. < I , on the other hand, the relation is reversed.

The failure in the small current zone of the characteristic curve to

follow the percentage slop results from the effect of the control spring which

determines the minimum operating current, or operating limit value of I..

at I s 0, 0.1A. If the outgoing current exceeds 2A, the effect of the

control spring can be ignored almost completely. In a zone where the effect

of the control spring can be ignored completely, the conditional formula for

operation is given by;

I1>I.l I or I 2 >1.1 I1

for star-connected generator

Selection of current transformer

In selecting the current transformers, pay heed to the following

points;

(1) Current transformers shall be those that do not cause damage to

the relay with maximum fault current.

(2) Difference between both current transformers shall be small in

large current zone to prevent misoperation due to the flow of

differential current in the event of an external fault.

(3) The relay current corresponding to the generator rating KVA shall

be less than the continuous conducting capacity.

BTE6-00977 %
P-9

Target and seal-in unit

When current higher than the target and seal-in unit operating current

flows through the contact circuit, the target and seal-in unit shows the

operation indicating plate and simultaneously shorts and protects the

contact of the major element.

6. Tests and Adjustment

In adjusting and testing the relay, current wave form should be sine

wave of the rated frequency as possible.

Mir.ism operating current value

The relay is preset at the factory so that it will operate at 0.1A when

the outgoing current is zero. To check this, make the current flow between

the terminals (T) - @ or (T) - © , measure the operating current value.

Should there arise a need for changing this value, rotate the cut of

the control spring adjusting ring with a screw driver.

Ratio characteristic curve

Use a testing circuit such as shown in Fig.6. In the case of a circuit

where the portion A is made up of solid lines, make current flow in from the

relay terminal © and flow out from the t e r m i n a l © . In the case of a

circuit where the portion A is made up of broken lines, measure current

which would form the operating limit under the reverse relationships, and

the ratio characteristic curve can be obtained as shown in Fig.3.

7. Installation

The relay is storongly packed for shipment. But

immediately upon receipt of the relay, an examination should

he made for any damage sustained during transit. If injury

or damage resulting from rough handling is evident, a claim

shoul'd he filed at once with the transportation company and

the nearist Sales Office of the Tokyo Shihaura Electric Co.

notified promptly. In this case, care should he taken not to

lose any of the small parts.

In unpacking the relay, care should he exercised not to

damage the parts or to disturb the adjustments. If the relay

is not to he used immediately, it should he stored i~ dry,

dustless place without unpacking.

Location and Installation

The relay should he installed in a clean, dry place free

from dust and any excessive vibration. It should he located

where is daily maintenance can he performed easily. The

relay should he mounted on vertical surface. For the outline

and the panel drilling, refer Toshiba standard drawcut case

type D-1A drawing.

Before the relay is put into service, it should te checked

PROPOSAL TUGAS AK11IR

I.JUDULTUGASAKHIR

Studi Tentang Pengoperasian Boiler Turbine Generator 1 x 5170 KW di P.T.

Sasa Inti Gending Probolinggo.

2. LATAR BELAKANG MASALAH

steam diperlukan 82 liter residu.

5170 KW, 3300 V, 50 Hz.

3. PERUMUSAN MASALAH

a. Mempelajari proses dan prinsip kerja dari BTG.

kering disebut Super Heater.

disebut exhaust steam pressure.
