STEPS USED TO FORMULATE THE CURRICULUM

The steps used to formulate the curriculum are : identification of the activities,
planning, approval, an implementation and assessment.

1. Identification of activities: A localized curriculum begin with the process of


identifying types of common economic, social cultural, environment and health
and people’s appreciation beautiful things that takes place in the local
community in order to integrate into the school curriculum and thereby foster
education for the community development. This can be done through the
following methods:
 Interviews with stake holders(e.g parents and teachers association, business
communities, teachers, learners, education board members, focused group which
discuss the matter.)
 Field visit
 Observations.
A needs assessment report on identified activities, eg fishing, agriculture which are
education needs of the community, should be produced by the teacher and the
community and distributed to the school, district, province and ministry of education
headquarters.
2. Planning: this involves careful selection of activities and strategies to exploit the
cultural environment, economic, esthetic and health values of each activity.
 Breaking down of each activities into topics as sub activities and formulating
general and specific learning outcomes(objectives)
 Arranging sub activities/topics according to grade levels. in doing this those
responsible will find it helpful to see which /what grade level a particular topic
can be taught.
 Organizing the resources (human resources , financial and material) for the
execution of a programme.
3. Approval : the school and the community should approve the planned learning
activities and teachers strategies ensure that they are suitable feasible and relevant
to the needs of the learners and community.
 the approved document should be sent to the district , province , E.C.Z and
ministry headquarters.
4. Implementation: learners and teachers in conjunction with members of local
community should implement the planned activities.
5. Assessment: continous assessment should be used to assess the learners
achievements in community studies.
 Learners shuld be assessed in terms of what they know , what can be done and
how they can do it. In addition assessment should consider the development of
positive and commitment toward the activities. Learners should be assessed
individually while giving out tasks .
 The teacher should keep the record of the assessment.
 The laerners activities will be subjected to the external examinations under
examination council of Zambia (ECZ) for inclusion in the final examination
result.
PREPARATION FOR TEACHING
The Zambian government has a policy on education and this is contained in the
document called educating our future. It is the basis of this education policy that all
education activities are planned for development of education in the country.
Syllabus
 A document which is built from the national education policy.
 It is meant to answer the need of the nation in all economic field.
 It gives detailed instruction of what to be taught in each grade and academic year.
 It is prepared by the ministry of education through the curriculum development
specialists after making conjunction with teachers, parents, religious and
government officials from various ministries.
 It is designed to give a detailed outline of what is to be taught the grade each
academic year.
 It contains the following to facilitate a teaching of each particular subject:
i. The general and specific outcomes.
ii. Time allocation for each subject area
iii. Topic /content of each subject area
iv. Reference books to enrich the subject content.
