1st ANNUAL FIBER FAIR

Dear fiber artist; I would like to introduce the 1st Annual Mabee Farm Fiber Fair taking place Saturday, October 1st from 10 am - 4 pm at the Mabee Farm Historic Site, in Rotterdam Junction, NY. The Farm has been eager to start a Fiber Fair and this year with the help of the Golden Fleece Spinners and Weavers Guild, our wishes have come true. We look forward to holding a yearly event to expand opportunities for fiber producers and consumers as well as educate the public in all aspects of fiber production and fiber arts. We invite all sorts of fiber arts including but not limited to: weaving, spinning, quilting, rug hooking, leather, needle arts, shearing etc. We also welcome anyone that would like to bring their fiber animals for display. (You must bring your own pen.) The Golden Fleece Spinners and Weavers will host a Natural Dyeing demo that day. Please contact me if you or your guild would be interested in holding a workshop. We encourage all guilds to hold their meeting that day and invite new memberships to your organization. We really want to make this a fun and pleasurable experience for everyone. For those of you who dont know about the Mabee Farm Historic Site, I will give you some background information on the Farm. The Mabee Farm land was originally given to fur trader, Daniel Janse Van Antwerpen by the Mohawk Indians about 1670. Jan Mabee purchased the western portion from him in 1705 and it was handed down through generations of Mabees. In 1993, a Mabee descendant, George Franchere donated the property to the Schenectady County Historical Society, along with scores of heirlooms and furniture. The farmstead includes the original main Dutch style stone house, a riverside Inn, slave quarters, a 1760 New World Dutch barn, a family cemetery (some graves dating back to the 1700s) and other outbuildings. It is on the National Register of Historic Places & has the oldest house in the Mohawk Valley and one of the oldest in New York State. The site welcomes about 16,000 visitors per year through events and tours. The farm is located outside of Schenectady NY, along the banks of the Mohawk River. There is easy access from the NYS Thruway (exit 26) and the I-890. The farm has 2 flushable modern restrooms and will have a food vendor on site.

If you know anyone else who might be interested in joining us, please pass this on.
We look forward to seeing you on October 1st! Sincerely,

Pat Barrot (Site Manager)
