Attachment 1: Hydro-dermabrasion
Hydro = Water
A clinical procedure that uses a water jet, combined with a variety of applicator heads and a vacuum
suction, to remove the outer layers of the epidermis whilst helping to release comedones, every day
dirt and grime whilst helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and scarring.
It is a treatment can be performed on a variety of areas on the face and body, including the neck,
chest, back and hands.
We all have days when our skin looks tired, dull and uneven. Breakouts, blotches and larger pores
can leave anyone feeling self-conscious about their skin, normally skin renews itself approximately
every 28 days. By removing dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin, Hydro-dermabrasion
speeds up the rate at which the skin would normally renew itself – ridding you of tired and dull
patches and revealing new, fresh skin and giving a radiant glow.
It can help with keeping congested skins clear, however, this treatment is not to be done over active
acne as it can spread the bacteria. It helps to keep the pores clear so therefore stopping the bacteria
from activating.
The vibration gently shakes and dislodges the cells, allowing any
trapped or built up dirt, blackheads (comedones) and the dead skin,
to become loose or free. When a little pressure is applied to the skin
as it glides across the skin, it can be swiftly removed with the blade
edge within a single pass.
The skin benefits from the ultrasonic sound waves, which propels
surface moisture from the tip of the blade, rapidly into the follicles and back out again. This helps to
purifying the skin, by removing the superficial dirt and sebum for a targeted deep exfoliation action
It is a completely painless technique, a method that can be used on a variety of different areas on
the body, especially where, blocked pores can form, The shape of the stainless steel head means it
can get into almost any position, causing no redness, swelling or discomfort of any kind making ideal
for those sensitive areas or hard to reach areas.
Can be used quite safely alongside other treatments, all skin types and most skin conditions.
On the machine labels this attachment is described as high frequency. The uses ultrasonic vibrations
and is not the high-frequency that produces ozone (a completely different treatment)
The procedure involves using energy waves to heat the deep layer of your skin known as your
dermis. This heat stimulates the fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin.
Collagen is the most common protein in your body. It creates the framework of your skin and
gives your skin its firmness. As we age, our cells produce less collagen and are elastin
becomes weaker. This leads to sagging skin and wrinkles as the quantity and quality begins to
decline.
With a radio frequency current the generating machine flows only through the tissue which is
between the electrodes/prongs on the hand piece; these electrodes start and complete the
electrical circuit. No current flows through the rest of the body, so no grounding or return pad is
needed.
It is the resistance to the current flow in the tissue, not the electrode that generates the heating
effect. RF waves heat the deep layer of your skin to between 122 and 167°F (50–75°C). By
maintaining a temperature over 115°F (46°C) for over 3 minutes causes your body to release heat-
shock proteins. These proteins stimulate your body to create new collagen fibres.
Must always be used with a medium i.e. gels suitable for electrotherapy or this could lead to a
potential burning.
Helps with the fight against sun damage, Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can causes our collagen
fibres in your skin to break down and become disorganized. By stimulating the collagen fibres, this
helps to strengthen those fibres.
Helps with face contouring, its stimulation of collagen fibres helps to improve facial skin laxity whilst
reducing fine lines wrinkles.
The heat generated, stimulates the blood supply, bringing a fresh supply nutrients to the layers of
skin, essentially feeding the skin.
Can be used safely alongside several over treatments and suitable for all skin types. There is no
downtime and completely painless. It is considered one of the most relaxing advanced facial
techniques because of the warming sensation.
Leaves your skin looking fresh, blushed with a more youthful appearance.
Mesotherapy has been widely known as the ‘Red Carpet Facial’ although normally done through the
‘Nappage system’, a series of microinjections into the epidermal layer of the skin. However the
microneedle injections can be a little uncomfortable and time consuming. Ultrasound is a much
quicker and painless alternative of delivering nutrition into the skin, which produces a similar result.
Unlike the Nappage system you can have other treatments after this to further and boost the
results.
Results give a boost to the skin improving the collagen production and levels and reduces
imperfections. Serums will contribute to a youthful glow and radiance to the skin making it appear
more flawless.
Most suppliers will have mesotherapy cocktail pre made, just choose the one that is suitable for you
clients skin type and concern. Skincare serums are also suitable as long as they are contain no
essential oils.
This is a no downtime treatment that is painless and suitable for all skin types and concerns.
What is Cryo?
Cryo simply means: Involving or producing cold, especially extreme cold.
The Cryo attachment cools the skin down to by reducing the normal temperature of the
skin therefore, when using this attachment, a medium must always be used.
This attachments cryo temperature range is -10 degrees C to 10 degrees C.
What are the Benefits and effects of the Cryo?
Applying the cold has many benefits to the skin including the reduction of redness,
swelling and inflammation. This is achieved by triggering vasoconstriction within the
skins blood vessels therefore restricting the amount of fluid within the vessels.
The extreme cold can also help reduce pore sizes, so great for more oily or combination
skin, but also helps to seal in any speciality serums that have been previously applied.
By stimulating the fibroblast cells to produce more collagen and elastin, it helps to tighten skin and
reduces fine lines and wrinkles by plumping the skin slightly leaving it looking more youthful.
This is great for all skin types and conditions, can be used after multiple different treatments. It is
painless with no downtime.
In addition to the cryo temperatures this attachment has an addition thermal mode.
When heat is applied to the skin it will cause a vasodilation effect on the blood vessels causing an
increase in blood flow to the area. This increase in temperature will increase cell activity and assist
with detoxification.
Many celebrities swear by the infusion method provided by an oxygen facial treatment, for
smoother and plumper, more youthful skin.
These benefits give an overall boost to the skins energy levels, this is ideal for post illness, post-
holiday (where there could have been increased sun exposure and a more indulgent diet) and times
of stress.
This procedure is completely painless with no downtime required. Ending a facial treatment with
oxygen therapy boosts results of other treatments and suitable for all skin types and conditions.
Using the small glass vial, an infusion with vitamins, minerals, essential nutrients, and botanical
extracts can be added to further boost the treatment results or used as a stand along treatment.
To access the camera select from the home screen either of these options
Comprehensive is a more in-depth snap shot of the skin. Fix point is a smaller and quicker look at the
skin.
Cross Infection occurs through the spread of disease from one person to another through poor
hygiene practices. Secondary Infection can occur as a result to injury to the client during treatment
or if the client already has a cut, if bacteria is penetrate the skin and cause infection. Sterilisation and
sanitisation procedures are used in order to minimise or destroy harmful micro-organisms which
could cause infection.
Contra-actions
This describes an adverse reaction to a treatment or product, which occurs during or shortly after a
treatment. Common contra-actions are allergies to products. This can often be identified if the area
becomes red, sore or itchy. All contra-actions should be noted on the clients’ treatment plan or log
sheet and where possible the cause identified. The treatment of a contra-action, caused by an
allergic reaction, is to remove the product immediately and apply a soothing lotion or cold compress
to the area.
Contra-indications
Any or elements of this hydra-facial machine, aims to improve the condition and appearance of the
skin. Treatments should NEVER be carried out over areas of skin that appear sore or infected. The
skin may react adversely to the treatment and the risk of cross infection is high. If a treatment is
carried out over infected skin the infection could spread to other areas of the clients face or to the
therapist

Treatment Preparations
The machine can be adapted into several combinations of facial treatments, using all the
attachments or just a few. In all instances these next few steps should remain the same.
Therapist preparations
o Wash and dry your hands before placing into your gloves!
o Hair tied back
o Wear apron
o Gloves
o Mask and or visor if required
Client Preparations
Treatment routine
Regardless of which attachments are being used a cleanse will be required, a single cleanse if using
the Hydro-dermabrasion attachment a double if not. Followed by a thorough skin analysis. Discuss
with client which attachments will be used and why and gain a signature consent.
Makeup is not only the ultimate barrier between the skin and treatments, but it also tacks on
pollution and dirt throughout the day.
Clean the eyes with separate pieces of cotton wool and the lips separately. Ideally you would ask you
client to come in with little or no make-up.
Step 2
o Cleanse
Using a mild cleanser, work into a foam in the hands, working in circular motions, cleanse the skin,
removing all traces of make up
Step 3
o Skin analysis
Skin analysis is the part of a professional facial when the aesthetician covers your eyes with cool
cotton pads and looks at your skin underneath a brightly lit "magnify lamp" to determine your skin
type, skin conditions, and the best course of treatment.
Once this has been completed you may then continue to offer, you’re facial with the correct product
for the skin.
Male clients
This treatment is suitable for male clients however, only if they are clean shaven can the
procedure be fully completed. If they have stubble or a beard these areas are avoided.
There are some rules that need to be followed when designing your treatments-
o They have been listed in the order if you wished to include all 6 Elements but bear in mind
that not all skins can tolerate this.
o It is possible to leave out attachments, but always work with the numbers, NEVER work
backwards. Certain attachments must go before others, i.e. attachment 1, 3 and 5 but not 1,
5 and 3
o A mask can be included into some of these attachments (Cryo or ultrasound), however avoid
a peel off mask, instead go for a gentle hyaluronic acid sheet mask or a soothing mask that is
in a non-setting/gel base.
o Masks should be added in before the oxygen attachment.
If this is then followed by heat once more (another hot towel or mitts to remove the gel), the heat
feels colder than the hot, in turn this helps to rebalance the skin and create a total healing effect.
The deep cleansing action of some of the attachments (No. 1 & 2) also cause
‘saponification’, emulsifying sebum and softening blockages. This softening
action, provided by the attachments, makes the removal of blackheads easier
with minimal trauma to the skin. The treatment can then be completed with
cryotherapy to close the pores and reduces redness from the extraction method.
Oxygen therapy can also be added if you think the client would benefit from this.
2. Place tissues beside your client’s ears and have an extra one
to hand, this is to catch any excess water.
3. Select the container A for cleansing (this can be for the first
pass), container B can be selected for the second pass.
5. Place the attachment onto the skin and wait until you set
water fill the chamber, only then you can move it.
8. Start on the neck and glide the pen towards the deep cervical lymph nodes. Make sure you
work either side of the wind pipe. Movement 1&2 on the diagram.
9. Next work on the chin (movement 3) draining towards the submental nodes
11. Stretch your hand to make an ‘L’ shape and place on the skin on the jawline stretching it
over the jaw area towards the submandibular nodes (movements 4 & 5)
12. Pinch the nose, to help the skin stay taut, work on either side of the nose (movements 6)
draining towards the buccal nodes. You can also drain either side of the lip too.
13. Work over the cheeks, avoiding directly under the eye, draining towards the pre-auricular
and parotid nodes (movements 7 & 8)
14. Move in straight lines in between the brows towards the forehead (movement 9).
15. Complete the procedure on the forehead (movements 10-11) draining towards the pre-
auricular and parotid nodes.
Erythema
Skin irritation
Skin bleeding
Mild flaking of the epidermis, due to triggering of cell renewal.
If a contra-action is severe, the client should contact the salon for professional advice. They should
be advised to apply a cooling, soothing non-perfumed product, eg calamine lotion, not to touch the
area or apply make-up and to avoid sunlight. Do not re-treat until the skin has healed. If the skin
reaction is very severe, advise alternative treatments.
Record this down in the client records and also make note of the settings that you used. The settings
can then be avoided for the next treatment
1. Squeeze an amount of ultrasound or desincrustation gel into your small bowl. NEVER TREAT
WITHOUT GEL
5. Set the energy to around 5. This can be increased if the clients skin can tolerate it or reduced
if it is uncomfortable of the skin gets too much erythema. Also an ‘M’ setting can be
selected. M1- strongest force that is continuous. M2- moderate continuous force. M3-
moderate intermittent force.
7. FIRST place the blade so it is smooth to the skin and glide this over the skin, towards the
lymph nodes. Always keep the attachment moving and don’t let it become stationary.
8. After half the time has elapsed switch the blade over so that you can ‘shovel’ the gel off the
skin. Use a tissue to clean the blade when necessary.
Re apply more gel if needed NEVER let the skin get dry!
9. For extractions- place the blade pointing down at the area of extraction at a 45-degree
angle. Use gentle pressure to push at the side of the follicle, increase pressure slightly and
see the follicular impaction plug raise from the follicle. Wipe blade regularly, with a tissue, to
remove any debris. Continue to perform extractions in this way for 2 minutes maximum
ensuring the skin is always moist
1. Cover the face in ultrasound gel or another gel suitable for electrical facial therapies. Make
sure that there is sufficient coverage as burns can occur.
2. Select the setting of 5, this is your average setting. Check the temperature on the cheek with
the client, they should feel warmth. If not then the setting can be increased and if it is too
hot then the setting can be reduced. The higher the energy the higher the temperature so
ensure the attachment stays moving and monitor the skin
3. Work over the face using lifting and gliding movements and make sure the attachment is
always moving. Constantly monitor the skin and check the temperature with the client
regularly (8-10 minutes)
4. Remove any excess gel using clean water and your sponges.
Attachment 4
Ultrasound
1. Choose you cocktail, serum or mask and apply evenly over the face
3. Set the energy to level 5 to start and adjust if needed depending on the clients’ skin and
comfort. Also an ‘M’ setting can be selected. M1- strongest force that is continuous. M2-
moderate continuous force. M3- moderate intermittent force.
4. Place on the cheek working in small circles and continue to work around the whole face until
the serum has all absorbed or the time is up (5-10 minutes)
1. Place some Aloe Vera, electrical gel or mask onto the back of your hand or in a bowl, apply
evenly to the face using a light fingertips
2. Set the timer to 8-10 minutes and ensure you can fell the attachment getting cool/cold.
3. Start working across the face in circular and outward motions. Never allow the skin to get
dry start working across the face
4. Gently wipe over and remove any excess products (if any) with clean damp sponges
5. Blot dry
If you are planning on using heat too, start on the heat setting and move to cool.
Attachment 6
Oxygen “Spray”
4. Working in small circles, work around the face in an outward motion always going towards
the lymph nodes for 5-10 minutes
5. Always point the nozzle down when around the nose and the top lip for the clients comfort
Finishing off.
o Moisturiser
Using a spatula take a small amount of moisturiser and again patting into the skin, before gently
rubbing in
o Eye cream
Take a small amount and pat between your ring fingers. Place on the brow bone and cheek bone and
pat in.
o SPF 50
Apply a small amount into the hands and pat over the face until completely covered
Do not touch the face, if you have to you must make sure the hands are clean.
No make up for at least 8 hours
No other heat treatments such as, facial waxing, sunbeds, saunas hot tubs or Jacuzzis
Avoid going to the gym or doing anything that will make you perspire.
Avoid swimming
For the first few days just cleanse using your hands no flannels, sponges, muslin cloths etc,
these are a form of further exfoliation even if it is gentle form
Use an SPF 50 daily, or for at least the next 7 days
Avoid Retinol products (7 days if using a 1% or above)
Aftercare advice (What the client should do over the next 7 days or until next treatment)
Product advice (What your client should do or change with their products)
Treatment advice
Attachments Skin scrubber, Radio frequency, ultrasound, cryo/cold hammer, the handle of the air
spray attachment
Machine unit
Wipe over using an anti-bac wipe
Empty out the waste container and ensure that is washed with soap and water thoroughly and left
to dry.
Plain water in containers can be left if the machine is regularly used or emptied back into the main
water container.
If container A had other products added this will need to tipped down the sink and washed out.
Make sure that the electrical unit itself is regularly checked for damage and signs of ‘wear and tear’.
Yearly PAT tests should be completed by qualified electricians or PAT tested staff members.
If this occurs do not use the machine and arrange for a qualified electrician or technician to repair
the machine.
