The Moorestown Business As-
sociations Autumn in
Moorestown festival has always
been held on the second Sunday
of October.
For the past 17 years, the MBA
has held its festival on the same
weekend, but there is a large con-
tingency in Moorestown Town-
ship that is wondering why the
festival cant be moved off of one
of the holiest days in the Jewish
calendar.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, while the
autumn festival is being held,
those who follow the Jewish faith
in Moorestown will be unable to
attend. Most will be recognizing
Yom Kippur on that day, said resi-
dent Daniel Feinberg, and will be
unable to attend the event.
Also, it was a controversial
enough decision that at least one
MBA board member resigned
from the organization because of
the decision.
Feinberg said its not about the
decision to hold the festival on
Yom Kippur, its the response or
lack of one from the MBA and
its president Mark Morgan.
I was disappointed in his re-
sponse. Ill explain why. All that
we needed as a Jewish communi-
ty in Moorestown was a state-
ment saying this wasnt a good
idea, we wont do this again and
well look out for this conflict in
the future, Feinberg said. In-
stead, what we got was a state-
ment saying they were worried
about the vendors not showing
up, and they were relieved that it
was going to be OK. Theyre ex-
cluding a big part of our commu-
nity by doing this.

Another special meeting, an-
other day without a decision. The
Moorestown Township Council
and other representatives met
with Rick Ragan last week to con-
tinue a discussion on the munici-
pal complex project, but no final
decision was made and another
special meeting has been sched-
uled for October.
Township representatives met
with Ragan of the Ragan Design
Group last week and listened as
he updated them on the munici-
pal complex project. The council
had been considering construct-
ing a new recreation building for
the project, but has since decided
that the old facility can still be
used, acting Township Manager
Tom Merchel said.
However, council also is not
willing to spend $1.5 million for
all of the proposed renovations to
the current building, he said.
Currently council and the de-
sign group are investigating
maintenance costs for the build-
ing, what has to be spent to bring
it up to code, and what it would
cost to relocate the recreation of-
fices up to the second floor of the
building.
Council also is looking at in-
cluding both the town council and
court chambers in the same
room, he said, but there seems to
be some hesitation to combine
those two elements in the same
room.
In his first plan, Ragan said
that the new library would be ap-
proximately 26,000 square feet
with two floors, Ragan said. The
first floor would include a circula-
tion desk in the center of the
space, a childrens area, teen
space, meeting rooms, a caf, and
a computer lab with 36 computer
terminals. It would be approxi-
mately 23,700 square feet, Ragan
said.
The second floor of the build-
ing would include storage space,
library administration space, and
an area for the Friends of the
Moorestown Library to hold book
sales and other fund-raising

Late last week, a Moorestown resident filed a complaint against the
township and the county clerk regarding the liquor license referen-
dum. Check out www.moorestownsun.comfor the story.

events.
Connected to the library would
be the administration building,
which would include a town
council chambers, clerks office,
collectors office, and the asses-
sors office on the first floor. The
second floor would include a mar-
riage license, construction, and
community office, plus archival
storage space.
This entire plan would cost the
township about $18.2 million.
In his second plan, Ragan sug-
gested having the court personnel
included in the township admin-
istration building, which would
cut down on the plans overall
square footage and would save a
few hundred thousand dollars,
township representatives report-
ed. This would combine the li-
brary, administration office, and
court into one building, Merchel
said, and would have a separate
police building.
The next special meeting will
be held on Oct. 3, Merchel said,
most likely at 6 p.m., prior to the
regular meeting at William Allen
Middle School.

statement published by the MBA
on Monday, Sept. 19, on its official
website.
In the statement, Morgan apol-
ogized for the festival being held
on Yom Kippur and explained
why the MBA believed that the
festival could not be rescheduled.
If this event were to be can-
celed, not only would the vendors
and car owners be forced to find
another festival to attend at the
last minute, but they more than
likely would not return to
Moorestown in future years, the
statement reads. If this event
were to be moved to another date,
the MBA would be fighting
against other, more-established,
two-day festivals that these ven-
dors and car owners have already
registered to attend.
Morgan went on to write that
the leaders of the MBA felt that
rescheduling the festival would
be tantamount to canceling the
event.
It could have long-term im-
pacts on the festival in the future,
he said.
The next time the festival and
Yom Kippur will coincide will be
in 2024.
The MBA hopes to be still
hosting successful Autumn In
Moorestown festivals through
2024, and will work with leaders
of the Moorestown Jewish com-
munity in advance of that years
event to see if there is an alter-
nate solution to this conflict.
Again, the MBA apologizes to the
Moorestown Jewish community
for this unfortunate conflict, the
statement reads.
Despite the business associa-
tions reasoning for the decision,
MBA Board Member Susan Buch-
wald resigned in protest. The
president/chief executive officer
of Community Treatment Solu-
tions said she was angered that
the MBA didnt write a letter of
apology to the Jewish community
sooner.
With the exception of my
early objections and suggestions,
I have purposely remained out of
the mix about the discussion re-
garding the upcoming Autumn in
Moorestown day scheduled on
Yom Kippur because I cannot be
objective, she said. As a Jew, I
cannot be flexible or understand-
ing about a major event being
held on the holiest day of the Jew-
ish calendar. As a professional
who works with children, I can-
not support a message of exclu-
sion, no matter how indirect it is,
and, as an individual committed
to diversity and cultural compe-
tency, I cannot be part of an or-
ganization that is willing to com-
promise these values.
After everything we have
learned from history, I am devas-
tated that this could happen in
our community.
Buchwald said she had been a
member of MBA board for the
past year.

B
y now almost everyone has
heard the dire warning: If the
Postal Services finances arent
fixed by next summer, mail delivery
stops.
Now, ordinarily, folks would shrug
off such words as hyperbole. But, only
a few weeks ago, the nation teetered
on fiscal default, so, these days, we all
have to pay attention.
Will the Postal Service close?
Theres perhaps the most remote
chance that it will, but, probably not.
Especially since there are a number of
solutions already on the table.
First, end Saturday delivery. It
would inconvenience some, but it
wont be that big of a deal once every-
one gets used to it.
Second, downsize employees and
close facilities. Every company has to
examine its expenditures. If it makes
sense to lay off some employees and
close some post offices, do it.
Third, expand the non-postal servic-
es provided at post offices. They al-
ready handle passports, for example.
So long as any extras dont give a
government agency an unfair advan-
tage over the private sector, have at it.
But really big money can be found
when lawmakers look at a pre-funded
retiree health benefits commitment
and billions of dollars the service said
it overpaid into a retirement fund.
Our guess is that some combination
of the above, with maybe a few other
ideas tossed in, will keep the mail
flowing for now.
Going forward, though, the Postal
Service should have the flexibility to
adapt to new technology, changing
times and increased competition. Cou-
ple that with budgetary mandates that
include mandatory spending cuts if
goals arent hit, and you have the basis
of a plan that could keep the mail com-
ing for years to come.
The mail isnt here yet
And some say that, come next summer, it never will get here
The postal problems
Would you miss Saturday postal deliv-
ery? What are your thoughts on
restructuring the Postal Service?
Lack of
honest dialogue
In a recent mailing to homeowners in
Moorestown, PREIT, owner of the
Moorestown Mall, urges us to reject the
rumors and learn the facts about why
change is needed at the Moorestown Mall.
In the absence of the promised public
meetings to address citizens concerns
about the scheduled liquor referendum
which PREIT considers the magic bullet to
address concerns about the mall, we are,
unfortunately, left with little else but ru-
mors to guide us.
Unless you choose to do some digging.
PREITs flyer states that the
Moorestown Mall has a 30 percent vacancy
rate and climbing.
However, in its June 30, 2011, filing with
the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC), PREIT states the mall occupancy
rate at 91.2 percent very close to the 93
percent occupancy rate at its starship
Cherry Hill Mall.
As there are legal penalties for lying to
the SEC, if not for lying to the citizens of
Moorestown, which figure do you believe?
PREIT projects up to $650,000 in in-
creased annual revenue once it installs
white tablecloth restaurants serving al-
cohol on its Moorestown site.
However, PREITs Plymouth Meeting
Mall, which has had four liquor serving
restaurants (presumably with tablecloths)
on site for the last four years, has a 82.7 per-
cent occupancy rate and, one would as-
sume, the decreased revenues that accom-
pany vacant retail spaces. Is liquor the
balm to retail woes?
Apparently not.
PREITs snazzy tax relief website claims
that the state ABC commission gave its
blessing to question No. 2 for the Novem-
ber ballot, restricting liquor sales in
Moorestown to the mall only. However, in
the letter from ABC Director Jerry Fischer
to PREIT attorney Anthony Drollas, Fisch-
er said, Ordinances which conflict with
the state regulatory scheme or are pre-
empted by state law are not approved.
As N.J. Municipal Land Use Law forbids
zoning by referendum, one wonders how
PREIT could have interpreted Fischers
comment to be a ringing endorsement.
However, question two will remain on the
ballot to lull voters into thinking limitation
of sites for liquor in town is feasible.
PREITs attempt to overturn
Moorestowns anti-liquor history is based
on greed and couched in smoke and mir-
rors rhetoric.
In the absence of honest dialogue, with
little but rumors to go on, and with facts
that belie PREITs rhetoric,
I urge the citizens of Moorestown to vote
no on questions one and two in Novem-
ber.

Dont have Moorestown
festival on Yom Kippur
Every year, I love going to the Autumn in
Moorestown festival.
I like walking on Main Street with my
friends and family, making scarecrows and
looking at the special cars. This year, I can-
not go to the celebration because I am Jew-
ish and I go to synagogue on the day it is
planned. Oct. 8 is Yom Kippur. It is a very
important holiday. It is a holiday when my
family and I fast, which means we do not
eat, we pray in synagogue and it is the
most holy day of the year for Jewish peo-
ple.
I am writing to you so you can let people
who live in our town know that having the
festival on Yom Kippur is not OK. I also
want the people who organized the festival
to look at their calendars and make sure
that Autumn in Moorestown is not planned
on an important Jewish holiday next year
so everyone can go. This festival is sup-
posed to be for everyone in the community,
Jewish people, too.
Hannah Feinberg
10 years old
Vacancy rate at the
Moorestown Mall
Moorestownians recently received a
flier in the mail from PREITs citizens
group that said the Moorestown Mall now
has a 30 percent vacancy rate and climb-
ing. PREITs June 30, 2011, federal Securi-
ties and Exchange Commission 8-K filing
says the leasable space at the Moorestown
Mall is 8.8 percent vacant as of June 30,
2011, and that vacancies are down slightly
from June 30, 2010. The same report says
leasable space at the Cherry Hill Mall is 7
percent vacant as of June 30, 2011.
Here is a link to the financial schedules
to PREITs June 30, 2011, 8-K if you would
like to see these figures for yourself:
www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/77281/
000119312511206490/dex991.htm.
Which numbers are more likely to be ac-
curate? Those that are filed with the feder-
al government under penalty of perjury
with a risk of criminal prosecution if they
are false, or those contained in a flier you
receive in the mail?
The flier also says that absent a change
in direction, which means unless PREIT
gets liquor licenses, the mall will continue
to decline and our taxes will go up. I dont
particularly care for scare tactics, especial-
ly when they are based on inaccurate infor-
mation and unsubstantiated predictions,
which is one reason why I oppose PREITs
liquor initiative.

Family of Dealerships Since 1946 www.LUCASCARS.com
609-521-4861
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
Judge Anne Marie Bumb ruled
in favor of a local family in early
September and has ordered the
Moorestown Township Public
School District to reimburse the
Duman family for tuition costs as-
sociated with their son, who is a
special needs student.
The Duman family sued the
school district in civil court in
2008 after the school district did
not create an individualized edu-
cation plan for their son so they
could determine if the school dis-
trict could provide him with a
free and appropriate public edu-
cation, as required through the
Individuals with Disabilities Edu-
cation Act.
The family had pulled their son
out of the school district and had
enrolled him in the Orchard
Friends School in Riverton in
fifth grade. The district denied
their request for the IEP unless
their son was enrolled in the dis-
trict, however. The family had
shown interest in reenlisting
their son into the district for mid-
dle school.
Scott Duman, the father of the
now 15-year-old student, said they
couldnt take him out of Orchard
Friends School and enroll him
back into the Moorestown district
for fear that the public school dis-
trict couldnt provide him with
the education he needed. If they
took him out of Orchard Friends
he most likely would have lost his
spot in the district, Duman said.
According to the IDEA, school
districts must provide IEPs to stu-
dents in the district boundaries,
even if theyre not enrolled in the
school district.
According to the New Jersey
Law Journal, Bumb wrote that
Surely, Congress did not intend
to turn special education into a
game of poker, where a school
district does not have to show its
cards until after the parents have
taken the gamble of enrolling
their child, and the child bears
the risk of losing an appropriate
education.
Scott Duman said he and his
wife had initially enrolled their
son into the Moorestown district,
but found that he wasnt making

in 1995, to more than 250 organi-
zations in the tri-state area.
Through Fox and Roach Chari-

tion to the Spanish American So-
cial Cultural Association, in Will-
ingboro, to provide services to the
Spanish community and other
ethnic groups in dealing with
housing and homelessness.
The charity also made dona-
tions to Habitat for Humanity in

son to build new homes and rehab
others. Finally, the charity also
donated to Catholic Charities
Emergency, in Delanco, for food,
clothing and school supplies for
children, and to help with home-
less and domestic violence sur-
vivors.

lawsuit against the district for
their refusal to pay for their sons
tuition for Orchard Friends
School and their refusal to give
him an IEP unless he was en-
rolled in the district.
Duman said the district began
to pay for his sons tuition at
Y.A.L.E. School in Cherry Hill
last year after Bumb ordered the
district to begin paying in Febru-
ary 2010.
Bumb has now ruled that the
district has to reimburse the fam-
ily for three years of tuition costs
at Orchard Friends School and
for four years of legal fees.
Duman said his familys legal
fees are more than $200,000 and he
believes the district has spent
even more. He has submitted an
OPRA request for all of their
legal bills for the lawsuit.
The legal fees are astronomi-
cal, its obscene. That money, as
far as Im concerned, should be
going to kids programs in the dis-
trict and not the attorneys,
Duman said of the school district.
When theyre cutting kids pro-
grams and fighting those who
they should be helping, its bad
policy.
The school district can choose
to appeal the decision if it wishes
to do so within 30 days.
Legal counsel for the district,
John Comegno, said the board of
education is currently reviewing
all of its options and has no fur-
ther comment.

Youngs Landscape Manage-
ment, Inc. (Youngs), a full-service
residential and commercial land-
scaping company headquartered
in southern New Jersey, an-
nounces its latest green initiative,
investing in a solar electricity
generating system that will pro-
vide enough power for the firms
office and nursery facility. The
yearlong project, which went live
in July 2011, included the permit-
ting, design and installation of
two systems. Together, the sys-
tems generate 61kW of solar
power, providing the energy need-
ed to operate seven buildings, in-
cluding greenhouses, irrigation
wells and lighting.
In selecting the system,
Youngs worked closely with Brite
Idea Energy. With one rooftop of
solar panels, the system is sized
to provide 100 percent maximum
available power generation al-
lowed by New Jersey based upon
the companys 2009 usage.
Youngs 61kW solar power
generation system will generate
70 Solar Renewable Energy Cred-
its annually. It will prevent 109,800
pounds of coal from being mined
and 219,600 pounds of CO2 from
entering the atmosphere,
Christopher J. Brown, with Brite
Idea Energy, said. The system
will also protect 76,860 gallons of
clean water from contamination
and avoid the release of NO and
SO2 into the environment.
This is one of many ways we
are striving to be better stewards
of our planet and its an invest-
ment that will offer greater cost
savings in the long run, said Joe
Ehrenreich, certified landscape
professional and general manag-
er of Youngs Landscape Manage-
ment. It follows the introduction
of our Organic Lawn Care Pro-
gram earlier this year and our in-
ternal recycling program sup-
ported by Youngs entire team.

The Moorestown Sun
Women they are, but ladies
they aint. The girls of the South
Jersey Roller Derby league dont
wear bows, they dont play with
dolls, and they sure dont use in-
line skates. Only roller skates can
suffice when delivering a vicious
forearm shiver into the jugular of
an opposing jammer.
But you wont find any of these
demolition beauties holding out
for more money or appearing on
television spots for local car com-
mercials, or even playing in front
of crowds of thousands. No, they
do it because its fun, its fast
paced, and they get some pretty
cool nicknames.
The girls of South Jersey
Roller Derby have been rocking
and rolling (mostly rolling) since
2007, when current president and
founder Melissa Morera, aka
Mos Deathly, moved up from Vir-
ginia with her sister and organ-
ized the league.
What started as a five-skater,
all girl team that practiced out-
doors in a public park has grown
into a co-ed league consisting of
70 skaters and a home skating
rink with a fully-formed banked
racetrack. The league has four in-
house teams and two traveling co-
ed teams that travel along the
East Coast skating against other
roller derby squads.
The South Jersey Roller Derby
has its own rink/stadium in West
Deptford where it hosts its match-
es. It also just purchased its first
banked track, The Green Ma-
chine, for $10,000 from the San
Diego Derby Dolls, Morera said.
Its a historic track, she said,
which has seen thousands of
matches played on its surface.

Responding to resident in-
quiries about what impact fine-
dining restaurants with alcohol
at Moorestown Mall would have
on crime and the costs of addi-
tional police presence at the mall,
PREIT President Joseph F.
Coradino cited numbers showing
criminal incidents had decreased
by 50 percent at Cherry Hill Mall
since fine-dining with alcohol
was added there due to a more
mature, affluent consumer being
attracted to the restaurants and
the high-end stores that tend to
come with them.
The statistics, provided by Al-
lied Barton Security Services,
show a 50 percent decline in crim-
inal incidents at the Cherry Hill
Mall between 2008 (the year prior
to the opening of additional fine-
dining restaurants at the mall)
and 2010. The types of incidents
include: assault, disorderly con-
duct, robbery, harassment, larce-
ny/theft, stolen vehicles and tres-
passing.
Fine-dining restaurants that
serve alcohol within Moorestown
Mall will attract a more mature,
affluent customer to dine and
shop there and that will make
for a safer, more family-friendly
destination, said Coradino. We
have been exceedingly pleased
with the partnership between our
private security personnel, the
Cherry Hill Township PD, and
PREIT, and look forward to devel-
oping and strengthening our rela-
tionships here in Moorestown.
Coradino also pledged that
PREIT would pay Moorestown
Township to provide additional,
off duty police officers to patrol
the mall during peak hours
should this Novembers referen-
dums pass. PREIT currently pays
Cherry Hill Township about
$60,000 per year to do the same at
Cherry Hill Mall.
Next to security, the other con-
cern I heard is that homeowners
would see their property taxes go
up to cover the cost of additional
security and a police presence at
the mall, said Coradino. I want
to put those fears to rest today by
stating unequivocally that PREIT
will pick up the cost of addition-
al, off-duty Moorestown Police of-
ficers and Moorestown taxpayers
will not have to shoulder any of
the cost. Our goal is to transform
the mall into a premier dining
and entertainment destination
and making sure it is safe and
inviting is a top priority.

I had always wanted to play
roller derby. Ive been a fan since I
was a little kid. There was a big
revival of the sport back in the
early 2000s but there was no
league in South Jersey. We actual-
ly started at Skate 2000 in
Bridgeton and then moved into
the Deptford skating center, and
now were in our own center,
Morera said.
We actually started by skating
outside in parks before we had
our own center. We got our first
participants through Craigslist
and MySpace. Its really grown
exponentially.
Roller derby has had a long his-
tory in the country, with roots in
banked track competitions dating
back to the 1930s.
However, as the sport went
through the decades, it started to
take a turn into the sports enter-
tainment arena (think the
WWE) with predetermined out-
comes and hokey gimmicks (like
hoops of fire and alligator pits).
You probably wont see many
alligator pits or cattle prods at the
South Jersey Roller Derby, unless
a coach needs a new motivational
tool for practice.
Each match consists of several
jams, where five members of
each team skate around the
banked track.
When a jam officially begins,
each teams blockers and pivots
try to clear the way for their jam-
mers, who start out behind the
pack.
Teams score by getting their
jammer up to the front of the
pack, and a point is given for each
time a jammer passes an oppos-
ing team member after lapping
the pack.
Each game consists of four, 15-
minute periods, where an unlim-
ited number of jams can take
place. Whichever team has the
most points after the fourth peri-
od wins the match.
Its a fast paced, exciting game
(even without alligator pits) that
attracts a number of athletic
skaters from all sorts of back-
grounds.
Im actually an accountant,
said Stephanie McGarvey, aka
Punch Drunk Shove. We have
psychologists, nurses and even
lawyers on our team.
McGarvey a member of the
A traveling team and the in-
league Big Rig Bettys squad
graduated from Widener Univer-
sity in 2009, and as a past rugby
athlete was looking to satiate her
blood lust in another sport (or
maybe she was just looking to
stay in shape) and joined the
league a year and a half ago.
Im primarily a power blocker.
I have to simultaneously assist
my jammer through the pack and
block the opposing jammer. I han-
dle the blockers as well; there are
always a ton of things going on in
the jam. Im not so much a point
scorer, she said. Its been a
blast. Its better than I thought,
even better than I thought it
would be. The best part for me is
the camaraderie of all the girls
and guys; its really like a second
family.
