HOSPITAL DRUGS AND THERAPEUTIC COMMITTEE

Purpose:
To advise on all medical & drug-related issues including surgical & medical
consumables
Frequency of Meetings: Quarterly/ As and When Required
Quorum: More than 50% of members have to be present for the quorum to be
complete. However, presence of chairperson, convener, representation from OT, ICU &
HODs, Nursing In-Charge an Hospital Manager(Quality) is mandatory.
Scope and Functions:
 Policy development and education. The committee formulates policies regarding
evaluation, selection, and therapeutic use of drugs and related devices.
 To serve in an evaluative, educational, and advisory capacity to the medical staff
and organizational administration in all matters pertaining to rational use of drugs
and other medical & surgical consumables, prosthesis, and implants
 To develop a formulary of drugs accepted for use in the Hospital and provide for
its constant revision based on an objective evaluation of their therapeutic merits,
safety, and cost.
 To establish a program and procedures that help ensure safe and effective drug
therapy, which is also cost-effective.
 To participate in quality assurance activities related to distribution, administration,
and use of medications.
 To monitor and evaluate adverse drug reactions in the hospital; make
appropriate recommendations to prevent their occurrence.
Documents for reference (Agenda): Reports for Medication Errors & Adverse Drug
Reactions, MOM Audits, High-Risk Medication management, LASA Drugs, Prescription
Audits, Drugs to be added /Deleted from Formulary, AMS review, Stockouts, report on
ABC & VED Analysis & Pharmacy reports. Narcotics Audit report, Any other issues/
concerns.
