MOUNT APO
ALAMAT NG
MT. APO
Apong was a valiant warrior who lived in the distant past. He was adored and well-liked in
Tumanggong's realm. He had a beautiful daughter who was well-liked and adored by many
warriors in the neighboring kingdoms. Sari was her name. She had smooth, lovely voice and
long, dark hair.
Two of the many men who pursued her were highly persistent. They were Maranao and
Maisug. Maisug was the bravest and most honorable of the two, and the lovely princess had
already won his heart. But Maranao wasn't going to be ignored. He entered the palace,
stood with his feet slightly apart, stabbed the earth with his spear, and demanded the
princess's hand.
Maranao was adamant in his desire. He suggested that he and Maisug engage in a duel. The
fight's outcome determined which of the two was better suitable to wed the princess. There
was no need for a duel, Sari insisted to her father, and she would only marry Maisug. She
also mentioned Maranao's treachery to her father. Apong, however, was unable to defy
custom and the rules of the nation, so he mandated that the two suitors engage in combat.
The fight went on well into the night since both fighters were good. The treacherous
Maranao suddenly grabbed a handful of sand and hurled it in Maisug's direction. Sand-
induced blindness prevented Maisug from seeing to protect himself. Apong intervened to
halt Maranao as he prepared to pierce his opponent's heart with his spear.
He made an effort to deflect Maranao's spear and protect Maisug. Maranao persisted and
instead stabbed Apong in the heart with his spear. The elderly man collapsed to the ground
bleeding. But just before he passed away, he cursed Maranao.
Right where Apong had fallen and died, Sari, Maisug, and Apong's devoted followers dug a
grave and buried him. The area where Apong was interred was marked by a rising pile of dirt
the following day.The earth mound eventually reached its current height. To honor Apong's
passing, the mound was given the name Mount Apo.
Apong was then abbreviated to "Apo. “The mountain terrified Maranao and his troops. It
suddenly exploded, spewing rocks and molten lava. Maranao and his supporters were
ultimately buried in blazing rocks and soil by the furious mountain. This is the reason the
enormous Cotobato Valley exists today. For the deceit and savagery of Maranao, Apong
finally received justice.
SCIENTIFIC
EXPLANATION
The tectonic setting of Mt. Apo
is in the Central Mindanao Arc
and the subduction associated
with the Philippine Trench may
have caused the formation of
Central Mindanao Arc.
Mt. Apo is a stratovolcano formed due to the
convergence of oceanic and continental plates.
Along with the plate, certain sediments melt and some
water becomes molten when the plate subducts. As a result,
its composition differs and becomes very viscous.
