Regular and Irregular Polygons and Their Features and Properties Lesson Plan
Regular and Irregular Polygons and Their Features and Properties Lesson Plan
Aim
Students will learn to identify and distinguish between regular and irregular polygons, and to
identify the features and properties of each.
Objectives
1. Students will be able to identify the differences between regular and irregular polygons.
2. Students will be able to identify the features of a regular polygon, including number of sides,
angles, and diagonals.
3. Students will be able to identify the features of an irregular polygon, including number of
sides, angles, and diagonals.
4. Students will be able to explain the properties of a regular polygon, including area, perimeter,
and interior angles.
5. Students will be able to explain the properties of an irregular polygon, including area,
perimeter, and interior angles.
Anticipatory Set
1. Begin the lesson by engaging the class in a discussion about polygons. Ask the class to name
some common polygons that they might find in everyday life and discuss the features of each
one. Explain that polygons are shapes with straight sides and angles. Ask the class what they
think the differences might be between regular and irregular polygons.
2. Introduce the concept of a regular polygon and explain that it is a polygon with all sides
and angles equal. Ask the class to consider how the number of sides affects the shape of the
polygon. Explain that the more sides a polygon has, the more circular it will appear. Ask the
class to consider how the number of sides might also affect the number of diagonals and interior
angles.
3. Lastly, introduce the concept of an irregular polygon and explain that it is a polygon with sides
and angles that are not equal. Ask the class to consider how the shape of an irregular polygon
might differ from a regular polygon and how the number of diagonals and interior angles might
differ. Explain that the number of sides, diagonals, and angles of an irregular polygon can be
used to identify it.
Modeled Practice
1. The teacher can provide an example of a regular polygon and describe the different features
and properties of the polygon. For example, the teacher could talk about the properties of a
triangle, such as the number of sides, angles, diagonals, area, and perimeter. The teacher can
then ask the class to consider how the number of sides and angles affects the shape of the
polygon.
2. The teacher can provide a hands-on activity to help the students identify the features and
properties of regular and irregular polygons. Give each student a set of geometric shapes
(cubes, squares, triangles, etc.) and ask them to create a regular or irregular polygon. Ask the
students to identify the features and properties of the polygon they created, such as the number
of sides, angles, diagonals, and area.
3. The teacher can provide a discussion-based activity to help the students understand the
properties of a regular and irregular polygon. Ask the class to consider how the number of sides,
angles, and diagonals affects the area and perimeter of the polygon. Ask the class to consider
how the interior angles of a polygon affects its shape. Allow the students to ask questions and
discuss their ideas.
Guided Practice
1. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a regular polygon (triangle, square,
pentagon, etc.). Ask each group to create a poster that includes information about the features
and properties of their polygon. Ask them to include a discussion of the number of sides, angles,
diagonals, area, and perimeter.
2. Divide students into small groups and assign each group an irregular polygon. Ask each
group to create a poster that includes information about the features and properties of their
polygon. Ask the students to include a discussion of the number of sides, angles, diagonals,
area, and perimeter.
3. Provide students with a worksheet that asks them to compare the features and properties
of a regular and irregular polygon. Ask the students to compare the number of sides, angles,
diagonals, area, and perimeter. Ask them to explain how the shape and size of a polygon affects
its properties.
Independent Practice
1. Ask students to research one particular type of regular or irregular polygon and create a
poster that includes information about its features and properties. Students should also include
a discussion of the number of sides, angles, diagonals, area, and perimeter.
2. Ask students to create a PowerPoint presentation that explains the features and properties
of regular and irregular polygons. The presentation should include information on the number
of sides, angles, diagonals, area, and perimeter. The presentation should also include a
discussion of how the shape and size of a polygon affects its properties.
3. Ask students to write a story that explains how the number of sides, angles, diagonals, area,
and perimeter of a regular or irregular polygon affects its shape and size. The story should also
include a discussion of how the shape of a polygon affects its properties.
Closure
At the end of the lesson, the teacher can ask the class to complete a writing prompt that asks
them to compare the features and properties of a regular and irregular polygon. Ask the students
to consider how the number of sides, angles, diagonals, area, and perimeter affects the shape
and size of a polygon. The teacher can also assign a quiz to assess the students' understanding
of the concepts discussed in the lesson. It is important to provide students with feedback on
their work so that they can understand what areas they need to focus on and improve.
