Lesson Plan: Regular and Irregular Polygons and their Fea-

tures and Properties

Aim
Students will learn to identify and distinguish between regular and irregular polygons, and to
identify the features and properties of each.

Objectives
1. Students will be able to identify the differences between regular and irregular polygons.
2. Students will be able to identify the features of a regular polygon, including number of sides,
angles, and diagonals.
3. Students will be able to identify the features of an irregular polygon, including number of
sides, angles, and diagonals.
4. Students will be able to explain the properties of a regular polygon, including area, perimeter,
and interior angles.
5. Students will be able to explain the properties of an irregular polygon, including area,
perimeter, and interior angles.

Possible Materials Needed


1. Textbook or educational handouts on polygons
2. Pictures of different regular and irregular polygons

Anticipatory Set
1. Begin the lesson by engaging the class in a discussion about polygons. Ask the class to name
some common polygons that they might find in everyday life and discuss the features of each
one. Explain that polygons are shapes with straight sides and angles. Ask the class what they
think the differences might be between regular and irregular polygons.

2. Introduce the concept of a regular polygon and explain that it is a polygon with all sides
and angles equal. Ask the class to consider how the number of sides affects the shape of the
polygon. Explain that the more sides a polygon has, the more circular it will appear. Ask the
