History of Brgy. Pangdan

Pangdan is the barrio's traditional name in the past and present.

This is Jagna's sole neighborhood where "pandan" or "pandamus"
thrives. As a result, it is known as Pangdan. Pangdan is derived from the
term "pandan," which refers to a thorny-leafed shrub. Mats and other
related items are made from the leaves. Balbalan, Kanhabol, and
Kinalumsan are part of this barrio. There is no credible record that
specifies the exact date of the founding of this barrio.

According to trustworthy sources, when the Spaniards arrived in

Bohol, this place was already set by a group of indigenous led by a datu.
After a few years after the British defeated the Spaniards, the Spanish
government founded the barrios of Jagna and Pangdan was one of them.

The families that originally occupied Pangdan were the Acenas of

Balbalan, the Jamisola, Acedo, Ranara, Galolo, and the Lakaran of
Canhabuol. The recorded Cabezas of Pangdan were Juan Acas, Anecito
Acenas, Nicolas Acenas, Dumpas Galolo, Paulino Acenas and Tomas
Jalloren. During the American administration and to the early Philippine
Republic, the barrio was headed by Tenientes Paulino Acenas, Nazario
Jamisola, Mariano Acaso, Cornelio Jamisola, Bernabe Rances, Hegenio
Jamisola and Vicente Acaso.

have a great time. Furthermore, it is also a place where the local kids fly their
kites during summer.

C. Ilihan Hill / Birhen sa Barangay Shrine

The Birhen Sa Barangay Shrine was created by the Jagnaanons because of their
deep devotion to the Holy Mother. It is located at Ilihan Hill in which only a few
meters separate the shrine from the municipal building of Pangdan. The side faces
the town belongs to Poblacion and the summit and the rest of the hill belongs to
Pangdan. It is reached thru a winding road and at the topmost of the hill is
enshrined the image of the Birhen sa Barangay where a chapel has been built in her
honor. The place overlooks the Sea of Mindanao and the beautiful coastline and
surrounding hills of neighboring towns. The local bishop designated the shrine as a
national shrine, and many pilgrims travel great distances to worship the miraculous

picture of the Blessed Lady Mary.

The painting of the Blessed Virgin is depicted dressed in native Filipino attire.
She has on a striped cloth bound around her waist and over a long white skirt with
a white blouse having contoured sleeves typical of a kimono. Her head is covered
by a long white veil, falling way beyond her shoulders She is carrying the baby
Jesus clad in swaddling clothes and who is carrying a rosary The Blessed Virgin is
painted in such a way as overlooking the mountain ranges and the coastline with a
few nipa houses which are typical Filipino native dwellings. The picture is
amazing and has a truly Filipino look and in due time was accorded honor, not
only by the Jagnaanons, but throughout Bohol and even in the whole Philippine
archipelago.
Ilihan Hill has become a religious site for pilgrimages by the faithful starting on
February 3, 1979, during the image's first visit to the place. The image stayed there
from that date onwards up to January 12, 1981. In January 14, 1981, the painting
was brought back to Bacolod City and was blessed by His Holiness. Pope John
Paul II during his visit on February 20, 1981 at the Bishop's Palace, Bacolod.

(PAINTING)
Name: The Massacre of the Innocents
Place: Pangdan, Jagna, Bohol
This is a panel painting belonged to the Acas family. This painting has been passed on
from generation to generation. I believe this painting is called "The Massacre of the Innocents"
because it depicts the story from the Bible when Herod, the King of Judea, found out about the
birth of Jesus, who was being called 'the king of the Jews', he ordered the killing of all boys
under the age of two. Sadly the original painting began to fade making the painting
unrecognizable and the surface of the original painting is already deteriorated. In attempt to fix
the original painting, Estilita B. Acas decided to commission Rosalio A. Ortez to recreate the
original painting. The new painting was finished around 1990.

IV. Intangible Heritage

(CULINARY ARTS)
 Homemade Golden-Brown Cookies of Pangdan
One of the famous home-based food processing ventures are the golden cookies
which began in the early 1900’s by the late Fabiana “Imay Bingbing” Jamisola
of Brgy. Pangdan. Until today, the best golden brown cookies are found in
Barangay Pangdan.

(FIESTA)
 Heritage Month/Feast of Sta. Cruz

Jagna is one with the whole nation in the celebration of May as the "Heritage
Month". With Jagna's string of fiestas celebrated by the 28 barangays out of 33,
almost every day during the month of May, foods and cultural festivities abound.
Pangdan celebrates the feast of Sta. Cruz on May 7.
 Christian Muslim Community (CMC)
Christian Muslim Community or CMC is an event which was organized
by Valentino Galolo in the year 2010. It became an annual celebration between the
Christian and Muslim residences of our purok which is the Purok 3 of Pangdan that
takes place on every first week of January. This particular occasion signifies the
unity of both religions in the community. Through this practices, the bond and
relationship of both religions became even more stronger as we respect and share
our different beliefs and faith with one another.

 Santacruzan
The Santacruzan or Kuros-Kuros is a well-known practice of Brgy.
Pangdan which is usually held on May 30. This commemorates the finding of the
True Cross by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. Furthermore, the Santa
Cruz is the most popular icon venetrated during the May Fiestas. This yearly
celebration was practiced by our ancestors and is still present in today’s generation.

 San Marcos Celebration

Same with the Santacruzan celebration, the San Marcos Celebration is still
practiced in today’s generation. In Barangay Pangdan, this happens every 3 rd week
of December. Though there is no exact date when was this started, the Jagnaanons
believed that the purpose of this year-end event is to give honor to St. Mark the
Evangelist.
The date and venue of the celebration in each barangay are now voted upon
or the members fix the date either towards the end of the year or at the start of the
new year. BYOP - Bring Your Own Provisions - is the order of the night. Usually,
the party is held at the barangay basketball court. Each family or clan brings its
own table(s) and chairs. Music starts playing when it gets dark. The main event
begins at around 7 p.m. The karaoke has been replaced by CDs and tape recorders.
Huge sound systems are installed and music can be heard from afar. After shared
meals are eaten, dancing and parlor games begin. Everyone looks forward to the
event.
At the outset, Jagna's San Marcos was uniquely organized in the sense that
only married couples were involved. They looked forward to this occasion to dress
up and to socialize among friends and acquaintances. Other towns may have
similar events, but nothing can compare Jagna's. However, this affair has recently

been turned into a Christmas and disco party in some barangays.

This beautiful social tradition strengthens the bonds not only within families
but among members of the barangay as well. They are encouraged to go around,
and visit other families in the court area.
(RITUALS)
 Sab-ong
Spain successfully Christianized Jagna yet the old folks still cling to old
practices. They believe that those practices will bring them extraordinary powers
and most important of all, good health. One of those practices is the Sab-ong, a
Visayan word meaning to put on in a hanging position. In times when a member of
the family is sickly, a sab-ong is performed.
The mangonabay or prayer leader does the ceremony. She prays in Latin or
Spanish while she showers petals on the celebrator, who is kneeling on a mat
before a candle-lit altar. The chant for the female celebrator is different from the

chant for the male.

The scapular of the Virgin Mary, particularly Our Lady of Mt. Carmel or the
brown scapular, is placed on the neck of the celebrator. A prayer imploring the aid
of the saint who is the namesake of the subject is made. If for some reason the
celebrator could not be present for the ceremony, the ritual is done on the clothes
of the subject.
Even these days the sab-ong is still practiced. Many seamen submit to the
ceremony when they come home as soon as their contract ends. They do this as a
thanksgiving for the good health they enjoyed while working at sea.
