Escalators
Escalators
Escalators are continuously circulating motorized stairways that move people between
floors of a building. Often used in conjunction with elevators, escalators provide a
convenient, efficient, and comfortable means of travel for people needing to ascend or
descend through limited sets of levelsEscalators are used to connect floors with an
angle of rise between 30°-35°. The entire length of an escalator must also provide
enough space for a lower zone of mechanical equipment along with a structural truss
that averages around 3’8” (1.12 m) deep
Types of Escalators Based on Classification
Classification based on Lifting Height
1. Small lifting height escalator: lifting height 3~10m;
2. Escalators with medium lifting height: lifting height 10~45m;
3. Escalator with a large lifting height: the lifting height is 45~65m.
Classification based on Escalator handrails
appearance
1. transparent handrails escalator the escalator handrails supported
by transparent tempered glass.
2. translucent handrails escalator handrail with translucent glass and
a small quantity of Struts supporting the escalators.
3. opaque, handrail brackets, and covered with a transparent plate
supported by escalator.
Classification based on position of drive
1. tip-driven escalator (or chain), drive on the escalators in the head,
and chains as traction component of escalators.
2. drive the escalator in the middle (or rack), drive device placed
between the escalators on the Central and the lower branches,
and rack as traction component of escalators. An escalator can be
equipped with multiple sets of drives, also known as multilevel
driving a combined escalator.
Classification based on Design and Layout
1. Line Escalators
a straight staircase ladder road
escalator.
2. Spiral Escalators
staircases spiral escalator, ladder
road.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• It helps a large no. of people in moving from • Escalators consume a significant amount of
one place to another at the same time and electricity, leading to higher energy costs
they reduce the need of elevator because
people would not have to wait for elevator compared to elevators.
and escalator can carry a large no. of people
at the same time. • Possible injuries when stopped suddenly
• It is helpful for the people that have pain in • Regular maintenance is necessary for proper
their legs and joints i.e it provide comfort to functioning and safety, incurring maintenance
the people. costs.
• Escalators are effective when used as a mean
of guidance and circulation.
• Their speed can be adjusted which is helpful
in managing the crowd.
• When turned off they can be used a staircase.
