one judges by the length of this description, it’s easy to see
it is this writer’s favorite cross country course.
Frenchtown — King Ranch Golf Course, located in the
Missoula Valley, hosts the race starting on hole one. It is
mostly flat and runs along the Clark Fork River. Runners
make two loops around it.
Glasgow — Held below Fort Peck Dam at the downstream
campground but still widely known as Kiwanis Park, the
Nemont Invitational course is all flat and extremely fast.
The first part of this race since being moved there was on a
gravel surface with some cactus causing problems for the
runners in previous years before turning into an asphalt path
the rest of the way. This season, on Saturday, September
30, starting at 10 a.m. the races will begin at the Fort Peck
Interpretive Center and follow the paved path through the
park, weaving along ponds and the Missouri River. This is a
race where most runners post their best time of the season.
A truly amazing fact about the Glasgow High School girls’
cross country program is it was the Class A state champion
for eight consecutive seasons: 1973-74-75-76-77-78-79-
80. After a dozen-year drought of not capturing the state
title and dropping down to Class B, the Scotty girls won
another eight state titles: 1993-2005-07-08-10-11-12-13!
