Tanae Baker and Emily See make the grueling grind
up the infamous hill on the backside of the University of
Montana golf course in Missoula during the 2022 Class
B girls cross country championship. Baker finished in
3rd and See 4th to clinch all-state recognition. Below is a
Box Elder/Rocky Boy — In 2022 their combined invitational
meet was held at Beaver Creek Golf Course west of Havre.
“It is a fairly level course giving runners a good opportunity
to really test themselves,” wrote Sports Editor Kody Farmer
in the Blaine County Journal, News-Opinion newspaper of
Chinook.
Bozeman — Bozeman Gallatin High School runs its races
on the Cottonwood Hills Golf Course, which is nestled in
the heart of the beautiful Gallatin Valley. It is mostly a flat
track for the runners but does feature some ups and downs.
Bozeman High School holds its races on the Bridger Creek
Golf Course, which is on the south end of the Bridger
Range and has plenty of gentle inclines and declines for
runners to traverse.
Broadus — This race is on the Rolling Hills Golf Course,
located three miles northwest of Broadus at the intersection
of Highways 59 and 212. It features six deceptively long
inclines and declines for the runners who do two laps
around the course. Its invitational meet is scheduled for
Friday, September 29, with the varsity girls going at 12:30
p.m. and varsity boys 1:15 p.m. The four non-varsity races
begin at 10 a.m.

County Leader that began in Thursday’s Buzz of all the
MHSA cross country courses in Montana. It really is a
hum-dinger of a story, if you missed Thursday’s Buzz,
grab one of them for delving into Part 2.
Browning — The Browning Invitational is held on the East
Glacier Golf Course at East Glacier Park Village. “It has a
lot of aspen trees and is one of my favorite courses,” says
Ronan Coach Dennis. “It’s right next to the lodge and the
runners make one loop around it.” It’s mostly a flat surface
with slight inclines and declines spread about the course.
Butte — Butte High School conducts its meet on the
Highland View Golf Course, an old-style course built in
1939 with the Berkley Pit in view a mile or two away. Butte
Central High School conducts its meet at Fairmont Hot
Springs Golf Course, which is mostly a flat running surface
but with some gentle inclines and declines sprinkled
throughout the 18-hole course.
Cascade — Stephanie Perry, heading into her seventh
season as head coach of the Badgers’ program and raised
in a family of runners, had a team but needed a course
to host a meet. Now she has one, meaning the Cascade
Invitational is set for Saturday, September 16. The course
begins on the school’s oval track in a bowl covering 200
meters, veers up onto the perimeter of the football practice
field, enters a utility road and then ascends a hill called
Matterhorn, where the entire city of Cascade can been seen.

It later enters Joe’s Trail on the town’s perimeter and then
goes along city streets. Later in the race runners go up the
backside of Matterhorn and once cresting, runners coast
downhill to the finish line at the school track they started
on. Coach Perry says “it is a great course for spectators.”
Centerville — It’s called the Centerville Gulch Trail Run
and the first 1.5 miles of it are all uphill!
Circle — The Town and Country Meet starts and ends at
the football field southwest of the townsite. After going up
a hill runners pass by the rodeo grounds then into the city,
loop around the park, cross over the Redwater River and
then to the cemetery. The harriers turn around and retrace

Fairview — The course is located at Sundheim Park, about
three miles east of Fairview at the bridge going over the
Yellowstone River in North Dakota (the town of Cartwright,
N.D. is actually closer to the course than Fairview).
The course starts on a blacktop trail, loops around the
campground, makes its way under the end of the bridge,
and then out to some dirt roads winding around sugar beet
fields. If there is a congested start, it means a runner needs
to explode at the beginning to get a good position early.
Frazer — Located three miles west of the townsite along
Indian Highway at Clark’s Hill overlooking the beautiful
Missouri River, which the athletes run parallel to twice for a

the path they just ran and head back to the football field for
the finish.
Colstrip — Races are held on the Ponderosa Butte Public
Golf Course, which is right next to Colstrip High School on
the north edge of the townsite. It features a big hill at the
end of the race.

while McKean is a 3-time allstater. Both are still running
competitively at the college level: Kaul at Montana State
University in Bozeman and McKean at the University of

short stretch, this intimidating hilly course could possibly be
the fan-friendliest in Montana. A spectator can view nearly
the entire race from atop the hill where the start/finish line
resides on the northeast corner of the course. “Frazer is not
an easy course with two long, gradual hills and one short
steep hill (Heart Attack Hill) leaving runners breathless as
they get to the top,” said Malta Coach Solberg. “The long
(gradual) downhills proved to help the runners lengthen
their strides and push with all their strength as they worked
their way back to the start/finish line. It’s a tough hilly
course.”
“What a great course!” wrote Whitewater Coach
Hammond in 2021. “This definitely took some strategizing
on the runner’s part to run a good race. Many runners did
a good job of attacking the uphill and using the downhill to
recover and cut some time. It’s a beautiful course to run.”
One last thing about the Frazer Classic, which will
be conducting its 54th annual this season on Thursday,
September 26, at 4:30 p.m. Near the end of the 5-meter
race the harriers have to run north back up the route in
which they ran south downhill to start the race. The gradual
incline near the end of the race on the west side of the
course is approximately 606 meters long (the Leader paced
it off last year). Once reaching that point runners make a
sharp turn east for the final straightaway to the finish line,
which is approximately 584 meters of a very gentle descent.
Leader tip: if one owns a pair of binoculars bring them to
this course and zoom in on the vast majority of the races! If
one judges by the length of this description, it’s easy to see
it is this writer’s favorite cross country course.
Frenchtown — King Ranch Golf Course, located in the
Missoula Valley, hosts the race starting on hole one. It is
mostly flat and runs along the Clark Fork River. Runners
make two loops around it.
Glasgow — Held below Fort Peck Dam at the downstream
campground but still widely known as Kiwanis Park, the
Nemont Invitational course is all flat and extremely fast.
The first part of this race since being moved there was on a
gravel surface with some cactus causing problems for the
runners in previous years before turning into an asphalt path
the rest of the way. This season, on Saturday, September
30, starting at 10 a.m. the races will begin at the Fort Peck
Interpretive Center and follow the paved path through the
park, weaving along ponds and the Missouri River. This is a
race where most runners post their best time of the season.
A truly amazing fact about the Glasgow High School girls’
cross country program is it was the Class A state champion

Glendive — Cottonwood Country Club’s golf course hosts
the Dawson County High School meet. It features some
great elevation changes and is surrounded by mature
cottonwood trees. Its invite runs on Friday, September 8.
Great Falls — Anaconda Hills Golf Course is where
the Great Falls Invitational is held, with its location in
the northeast corner of the city (the community of Black
Eagle, to be exact). The cross country course, which many
consider one of the toughest in the state, features drastic
elevation changes on a number of difficult hills. Eagle Falls
Golf Course, formerly known as R.O. Speck Golf Course
until 2001, hosted the All-Class State Meet in 2019, where
runners competed on snowy and slushy conditions.
Hamilton — The course is located east of the city on the
Hamilton Golf Club layout and the harriers make two loops
around it. It is mostly a flat surface with a few gradual
inclines and declines but with stunning scenery. Athletes
(as well as spectators) get to take in the views of the
Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountain ranges to the west and
east, respectively, while running their race. The land on
which the races are run were once owned by Marcus Daly,
a Montana Copper King (note: the meet used to be held on
the grounds of the Marcus Daly Mansion).
Hardin — Gas Cap Hill is a notoriously long, tough climb for
runners. In 2022, with the weather forecast calling for very
hot temperatures approaching triple digits, race coordinators
had a person standing at the top of the hill spraying runners
with water to cool them off as they approached the summit,
said Powder River County Coach Emmons. Heat is often a
factor on this course due to it usually being held early in the
season when it is still officially summer.
Harlem — The Harlem Golf Course “is completely flat,”

are downhill to the finish line, which is highly likely a Godsend
for the runners. When Montana’s 2023 cross country runners
gather at this location on the third Saturday of October the
running order is scheduled to be: Class C boys, 11 a.m.; AA
boys, 11:25 a.m.; C girls, 11:50 a.m.; AA girls, 12:20 p.m.; A
boys, 12:50 p.m.; B boys, 1:15 p.m.; A girls, 1:40 p.m.; B girls,
2:10 p.m. When it is not hosting a high school cross country
meet, it is a world-class Equestrian Triathlon venue where
horse and rider negotiate a course jumping over barriers.
Laurel — The Locomotives’ cross country track is located
on the 18-hole Laurel Golf Course, which, to an extent,
is mostly an all-flat surface with some slight inclines and

Miles City — The Miles City Stampede races are held on
the Town & Country Club Golf Course, which is flat, fast
and virtually all grass. The 2023 event is scheduled for
Saturday, September 23, with the initial starter’s gun going
off at 10 a.m.
Missoula — The Mountain West Classic is run on the
University of Montana Golf Course. If a high school girl or
boy cross country runner wants to continue the sport at
the college level, this is the meet they have to compete in
because many college scouts are in attendance. This meet,
which attracts around 2,500 competitors, is hosted by the
Missoula Running Club and Mountain West Track Club,
which are not affiliated with any Montana high schools.
“It is a deceptively hilly golf course” with the start being
a gradual incline, said Glasgow Coach McKean. The surface
consists of mostly grass with small sections of dirt trail.
“There is a monster hill” about 1.75 miles into the race
said Chinook head coach Kendal Harwood. “It can mentally
break some people.”
As brutal as it can be, the hill can be attacked and
used to a runner’s advantage to pass other competitors.
On a dirt trail it is about 400 meters up and then about
400 meters down where it re-enters the golf course and
retraces the path the runners ran the first mile.
Whitewater Coach Hammond wrote in October 2021
after the All-Class State Meet was held on it: “There were
girls that walked and there were girls that cried getting up
that hill.” At the 3-mile mark it veers off a bit and finishes on
a fairway across from the starting line. Teams from all over
the Pacific Northwest show up and this upcoming season it
is scheduled to be conducted on Saturday, September 23.
The course is scheduled to host the MHSA’s 61st annual
All-Class State Meet Saturday, October 26, 2024, with the
order of races being Class C boys, AA boys, C girls, AA
girls, A boys, B boys, A girls and B girls.
Plentywood — The race, usually held during the last week
of the regular season but changed to Saturday, September
16 this season, has a little bit of everything when ran on
the Plentywood Golf Course, including plenty of inclines
and declines on a mostly grass surface. Plentywood also
has an auxiliary course to use if need be, as was the case
during the 2019 and 2021 seasons when the golf course
was just too soggy following heavy rains, which would
have taken a brutal beating if the races were held on it. The
auxiliary course starts on the Lincoln Field football grass
heading north and makes a right turn onto the oval track
where runners cover 570 meters. Runners depart the track
in the southwest corner of the facility and climb up a short
but steep hill heading northwest while getting out of the
bowl and then run through a few blocks of a residential
area. They turn north onto a gravel road leading to the
Bolster Dam campground/boat ramp area on the northwest
side of the reservoir. About halfway along this road they
turn around and follow the same path back to Lincoln Field.
Polson — The Polson Invitational is run on the Silver Fox
Golf Course in Pablo at Salish Kootenai College. “It’s a fun
one,” said Ronan Coach Dennis. “It’s all on the golf course,
mostly flat, surrounded by trees and mountain views and at
one point you have to jump over hay bales.”
Poplar — The meet, scheduled for 10 a.m. September 2
this season, is conducted at the Medicine Bear Complex
a few miles east of Poplar (turn north off Highway 2 at
the roundabout). The course has a little bit of everything.
The student-athletes run on some pavement then on a dirt
road heading north down a somewhat short but steep hill
followed by a couple hundred meters of flat terrain before
turning west and following the Poplar River. Once going as
far west as they can the runners turn around and run the
same road they were just on, but on the return trip they go
up the hill, which by this point of the race can be grueling.
Once tackling the run up the hill it is back on the pavement
that later turns into a small plot of grass to finish the race.
“This is a tough one because you run on every surface
possible from blacktop to gravel road out to a dirt road on
the prairie and then back to blacktop and cement and finish
on grass,” said Malta Coach Solberg. The hill has been
described as “short and painful.”
Red Lodge — Headquartered out of the fairgrounds, this
course has proven to be popular with runners as it winds
through the hills and near a stream, but is mostly a flat
course.
Ronan — Its race is called the Canal Bank Run on the
North Crow Course and is the meet where a 4-wheeler
runs along the irrigation canal to scare off the bears so
the athletes can run their races (true story!). It is hosted
by Ronan High School on a back road along the Mission
Mountains, completely back up in the trees.
Roundup — This race runs through Pine Ridge Golf
Course on Roundup’s north side, where there are plenty of
inclines and declines in the topograghy the runners have
to negotiate.
Saint Ignatius — It starts at the high school, winds around
the sports complex, goes into town on paved streets and
through a neighborhood. Then it is back to the sports
complex where runners make two loops around. Note:
Saint Ignatius and Charlo are in a cooperative agreement
for cross country in the 2023 season.
Scobey — On the western outskirts of the city the race
starts at Pioneer Town, which depicts the homesteading
era, and comes out onto Golf Course Road heading south.
It goes by the east side of the golf-cart storage building
at the Scobey Golf Course, takes a slight drop down and
takes a left turn onto the No. 7 fairway. Then it follows a
path on the outer rough of holes No. 1 (a slight downhill), 4,
5 (all flat) and 6 (climbs to the clubhouse). It then traverses
the outer rough along holes 7, 8 and 9. From there the
race gets back on Golf Course Road heading north, re-
enters the north gate of Pioneer Town, heads west a short
distance, goes over the 1913 Tande Bridge, comes up
Pioneer Avenue and ends just west of the Dirty Shame
Saloon. The Scobey Invitational runs Friday, September 8,
at 10 a.m.
Shelby — Its invitational is held at the lush and flat Marias

something for the final mile and the necessary kick you
need to finish your race,” said Malta Coach Solberg.
Sidney — Long and tough explains the cross country
route on the Sidney Country Club 18-hole golf course.
It features a one-half-mile-long gradual hill at the start.
It’s a longer-than-normal course with challenging terrain
and hilly conditions. “It is a mix of flat terrain with hairpin
turns, and a challenging hill dropping to a long finish,” said
Glasgow Coach McKean. It is extra tough for the middle-
school runners who have to cover 1.8 miles as compared
to the general 1.5- or 1.55-mile races. “It’s the longest and
toughest course of the year,” said McKean. The Sidney
Invitational for high schoolers is set for Saturday, October
7, with the initial starter’s gun going off at 10 a.m.
Sunburst — The race starts at the football field on a road
above a ledge then it is pretty much downhill the first
half mile into town. The course then runs along side the
outskirts of which is pretty much flat. The last half mile or
so is back to the school and ends with one lap around the
400-meter track.
Thompson Falls — “It’s beautiful, on the Rivers Bend Golf
Course, which is right along the Clark Fork River,” said
Ronan Coach Dennis of his favorite course. “It starts on
one tier of the course then jumps up to the next tier. It has
a lot of old pine trees and fur trees around it.”
Three Forks — The Headwaters Invitational is conducted
on the Headwaters Public Golf Course, which is pretty
much a flat track for the runners.
Townsend — The Rusty Raisland Memorial Meet is
scheduled to run Saturday, October 14, on Old Baldy Golf
Course. One word describes the course: FLAT!
Twin Bridges — The Falcons of head coach Stacy

area where the race started. There are many opportunities
for spectators to see most of the race. While it is a flat
course it is a fast course.
West Yellowstone — When there is not snow on the ground
the Rendezvous Ski Trails is not hosting cross country skiers
but instead cross country runners, says Bailee Parker, head
coach of the West Yellowstone Wolverines. The race starts
and finishes on the ski trail’s biathlon range and in between
it goes into a trail through the woods featuring an all-dirt path
with some overgrowth and many hills in it. The course is 1.5
miles long so the race is a two-looper. The 2023 Wolverine
Classic on this course is set for Saturday, October 7. An
interesting aside: Bailee Parker was the Class C state
champion in the 2015 season, running a 17:46.09 on Eagle
Falls Golf Course in Great Falls, which was 1:12.83 faster
than runnersup BreElle Wacker of Winnett-Grass Range.
Four seasons later in 2019 her sister, senior Averi Parker,
captured the Class C state title on the same Eagle Falls Golf
Course in Great Falls, albeit over a grass surface covered
with snow and slush. Averi defeated Plentywood freshman
Annie Kaul 20:11.16-to-20:23.29, just over a 12-second
margin. Led by the Parker sisters, the Wolverines captured
Class C state titles in 2014, 2017 and 2018.
Whitefish — Its race is held on the Whitefish Lake Golf
Club’s course and runs along Grouse Mountain Lodge. It
is kind of a hilly course going back into the trees. Runners
make two loops around everything. It is a tough course with
the stretch run always being fast because it is a gradual
downward slope to the finish line.
Wolf Point — It’s held at Airport Golf Course located east
of the city, which is flat, grassy and green. One can take in
all the action in just two week’s time on Friday, August 25.
